If you have any comments or questions about the list, please email me at streetz@magicdeckvortex.com. Most of the cards you will be able to click on and see the full image. Others you will not since I have not had time to transfer all of my full size images to the web server. But.. anyway. .here you go! ENJOY. He is on this list just because his name is so long. Not really. For 5 mana you get a 3/3 creature and a discard engine... that you choose. Not a bad ability from a Legends card! If you would like to see him in a deck, check out Legenden.
I am biased on this one.. I like cats and I have loved this card since it came out a few years back in Exodus. 2/3 for 3 mana and first strike... AND forestwalk. He makes other kitties look average! Check out 9 Lives, a deck I put together with Mirri in it.
A bit over costed but not really when you basically clear the board of all weenies with one toughness and at the same time you give all your black hordes +1/+1. Oh yes, and he has flying. NIGHTBREED uses this guy... check it out here.
Evasion he has. Card advantage he gives. 3/4 is not bad. But, he has his weaknesses. I wanted to put him higher on the list because blue is my new favorite color, but the other cards just had him beat! Check out Arcanis, the Incinerator if you would like to see this guy in a burn deck.
Millstone on speed as a 1/3 creature for only 3 mana. I can completely understand why this guy is a legend. He fits nice into those library depletion decks as well as fun Merfolk decks. Here is a deck using Mr. Laquatus.
Well suited for recursion decks he is a nice legend with some power packing punches. There three P's. Well anyway, I have nothing more to say other than put him in your casual black decks. I don't think he ever made it to the tournament scene but he is still a great card. Volrath can be found in this deck.
Ihsan saw quite a bit of tournament play because of his Prot. from White ability. Not to mention he is a 5/5 for 6 mana with no draw backs. That is rare in a good black card. For this reason, cards like Morifen and Gallowbraids did not make the list. Check out Retro Vampires, a deck using Ihsan.
Mini Might of Oaks as an Insect (and a Druid). Him and Krosan must be buddies or something. Anyway, Thriss takes a while to get out even in speed decks which is why he isn't in the top 10. Check out SHADE OF NANTUKO, featuring Thriss.
Twice the cost of Ball Lightning and 4 more toughness and flying. Hey! He sticks around a bit longer too. Nice.
Two 3/4 creatures for only 6 mana. Stangg is a great card from Legends that is still on the top 100 list of most wanted cards (I think). He is also quite expensive (monetarily speaking). Here is deck using STANGG.
Jeska is fierce and attractive. To bad she is now Phage in the Onslaught set. First Strike, Haste and you can think of her as the red, cute and adorable Timmy. Too bad cards like Flare can kill her. Click here if you would like to see one of the decks Jeska, Warrior Adept is in.
Jeska's brother, Kamahl, is just a bit more fierce than his sister. 6/1 and Haste and hey... you can tap him and lightning bolt any target every turn. Not bad. I like his Green version a bit more as you'll see. Click here if you would like to see one of the decks that Kamahl, Pit Fighter is in.
Lockdown central. His card, Ertai, the Corrupted, is not nearly as sweet as the original. Combined with cards like Arcane Laboratory and other back up cards and you have a great PRISON deck. If you would like to see a deck this guy is in, click here to see a deck I made called BOOBY'S.
I never noticed this guy until I put this top 30 list together. Recursion every turn and controlled. Plus he is only three mana (Strange mana at that) and is a 1/2. Easily killed, but wonderful at grave digging. Here is a deck using Adun.
What more could you ask for. A 6/5 hasty flying trampling first striker when attacking monstrosity. Oh yes, and he has protection from black so he works well with Pestilence. Plus there are three other cards out there that can fetch him from your library for free. Check out NIGHTBREED, a deck using this guy.
Too bad Kirtar can kill most of the creatures above and remove them from the game. I guess that is why is number 15 and above cards like the Spirit of the Night and Stangg. He is a very mana efficient 2/2 flyer too. Check out BIRD DROPPINGS to see Kirtar in action!
Mana efficient and swampwalk. In today's mono-black control era... that is a big bonus. They only trick is trying to get this guy around innocent blood. Anyway, Solkanar is a old time favorite as well as a life gaining powerhouse. 5/5 for five mana is cool too.
In terms of mana efficiency, this one has all the previous cards topped. only 6 mana for an 8/5 trampler with regeneration. With the speed of mono-green decks, you should have no problem getting him out on turn three or four to beatdown your opponent with ease. Shown here, is a deck called GREEN ELEMENTS using Silvos.
Storm Cauldron and Prosperity come to mind when this guy hits the table. Assuming he is a turn 5 cast... he is untargetable and maybe 8/8 or 12/12. Not bad. He has a bit more potential than Silvos and thus is a spot higher. Don't you just love green fatties. Check out Storm Elves, a deck featuring Multani as one of the main powerhouses.
Three green cards in a row. Wow. This is the controllable version of Multani. Only 4/4 but for a moment you can Might of Oaks her for just one green mana. Autumn Willow has seen lots of tournament play in her lifetime since Homelands but she has made it just one slot short of top 10. Check her out as a back up in an Ernhamgeddon deck.
It's about time Wizards gave white some land-bound fatties. 4/7 with Righteousness and a built in Mother of Runes ability. For these reasons Jareth has placed higher on the Pit Fighter scale than three of the others.
Braids and Balthor make a great team. Maybe that's why they are both in the top ten. For four mana you get a 2/2 Minion booster and the ability to Living Death only black and red creatures back to play.
Here is another one of the cards I am biased in putting in the top ten. I love Karn. Being known as artifact man in my early days in playing magic, he can turn your Urza's Blueprints into 6/6 attackers or block Pit Fighter Kamahl with ease. Silver is a good metal too!
She's a killer with flying that is a cheaper Avatar of Woe. 5/5 isn't that good but rather unstoppable in the current environment with some exceptions to bounce, swords, and other card removing effects. Want to get her out earlier... add some Thrulls and Cabal Coffers to the scene and you could see her out on turn 3.
Kamahl makes a much better green card. More endurance.. an every turn Overrun and a controllable individualistic Natural Affinity. True, a lightning bolt could kill him, but he sure packs a punch in a saproling deck. Check out Legion Land Loss v2.0.
This queen was bound for the top ten and not because of her stunning beauty. She is actually quite ugly to the humans in the Magic world. Anyway, a 7/7 creature for 5 mana isn't bad, nor is her sliver generating powers. With all the cards in the Invasion block oriented towards multi-color decks, getting her out sooner is better. Literally.
Better than Ertai and weaker than Arcanis. However, he sure has the ability to clear the board by bouncing everything back to its owner's hand. All you have to do is sacrifice a permanent. He also saw a lot of tournament play in the Urza's Saga environment. He will be even better with all the new wizard cards from the Onslaught set. However, here is a deck that doesn't use Onslaught cards that features Barrin.
Good ol' Lin Sivvi. She's kind of cute and is quite a rebel leader. She offers not only mono-white a good creature base, but other colors a creature base to back-up its theme. Lin Sivvi is by far the best White Legend among them all... even Radiant and Jareth. I don't think they would be able to deal with her creature hoard without say, Wrath of God. Speaking of which, why didn't Mageta the Lion make the top ten? Well... he just didn't. He is an honorable mention card, though (below). Counter-Rebels is a deck showing the potential on Lin-Sivvi.
If this guy was an office entry level worker, he could go out drinking every night and get smashed beyond recognition and still be at work the next morning. Now that's impressive. Squee is unstoppable and recastable. He keeps your hand full for those Scent of Cinders or offers fuel for Spell shaping creatures. While there are great red legends like Rorix and Kamahl, Pit Fighter, he fuels many combo engines with consistent results. They should make more legends who keep coming back (to your hand). To go back to the office assistant, I think this guy could only be an entry level guy... after all of that drinking... I think he would have only two brain cells left. Check out FIRESTORM if you want to see this bad boy in action.
I hate black. I especially hate mono black control. It is boring and effortless and home to Braids. This bugger just clears the board and gives you control in no time. With support cards like Smother, Innocent Blood and Rancid Earth, if you have this card on the board the game is usually over in no time and in your favor too! Anyway, Braids is the best cheap legend among them since it has the ability of each player sacrificing a permanent at the beginning of their upkeep. This annihilates most other deck types. Even those damn U/G madness decks cringe at the site of this chick. Have you checked out her picture on the Blackmail card. Another great control/discard card featuring this bad-momma. You know, I really wanted Rasputin Dreamweaver to win this slot. Oh well. Click here to see an example deck using Braids. Note.. they are too many of them (decks that feature Braids). Perhaps that is why she is number one.
#59:
BLIND SEER.
Who would have ever thought they would make a whole page of Atog creatures in Odyssey. This guy isn't that bad... but up your Psychatog and then sack him to the Atogatog. The only problem is making a good deck.. I tried. Check out Streetzatog.
Treefolk are cool. Saprolings are annoying. This guy gives you both. He gives all Treefolk +1/+1 and he has a great kicker cost. For each 1 you pay as the kicker (X) you get a saproling token. SAP ATTACK is a good example of a deck using this treefolk guy!
Kaysa is an eye catcher in terms of her ability to give all your little Saprolings +1/+1 not not mention herself. Kaysa helps out all green creatures which includes Elves and Thallids. In fact, if you would like, check out the deck Thallidry.
She is just beginning to be sleight of minded. 2/3 for 4 mana isn't bad considering her AWESOME ability. In combination with cards like the Blind Seer above, she rocks everyone's world. Check out VISIONARY, a deck using her and the Blind Seer.
Speaking of Legends, how's about a Demonic Tutor that usable every turn and that fetches only Legends. In a tight situation and need your Barrin? Just fetch him and cast him and Walla! Problem solved. You can of course use her ability to fetch other Legendary cards too. Check out a recent addition to the deck database here; it uses Sisay.
Anyone have any good decks using this card. It is a good card although I yet to figure out a good combo with him. Astral Slide works wonders I am sure... for mana production... but he is just a great and unique card. If you interested in using him in a deck, click her to see Rasputin's Maiden (as an example).
White's Skirk Marshall. Wrath of God that leaves one guy left on the board. His ability cost is high (two cards) but there are plenty of ways around that. Parallax Wave words wonders with this guy too. If you would like to see this guy in action, check out Mageta's Rule.
Who wouldn't want a bunch of 1/1 creatures for each land you control? This guy is unique and cool.. but a bit overcosted. Here is a deck that uses Hazezon Tamar.
This guy is similar to a toned down creature version of Cabal Coffers (black). He is a staple card in elf decks as he sure gives that mana advantage in the early game. Big Green, a deck I found on Wizard's website, features Rofellos as the main mana accelerator... check it out here. It's called BIG GREEN.
Good with thallids, excellent with Hasty Firecats. Check out Stromgald's Wrath, a deck I put together after taking note of this card. I put a deck together to show you how Marton could be used with efficiency. The deck is Stromgald's Wrath.
This is probably the best low costed Vampire in all of Magic. His drawback is like a Lord of the Pit.. but with Sengir Autocrat or Breeding Pit.. its not so bad. Other cards that could back him up include Nether Shadow, Undead Gladiator, and Ichorid... oh yes.. and he can fly too!
