it's a combo deck, play it where it's generally fine to play combo.
the basic strategy is to get survival into play as fast as you can. then
ditch whatever creature you have in your hand and search for squee.
if you can get timewalk, cast it and shapeshifter at the same time,
allowing for the win next turn. if you can't-- try not to get the
shifter killed until next turn
ideally, here's how to do it.
1.) discard a creature, search for squee.
2.) discard squee, search for inkshrouder.
3.) hard cast volrath's shapeshifter.
4a.) next turn, discard inkshrouder via survival and search for search
for phage. and declare your attack phase
-or-
4b.) if you already have phage in hand, discard shrouder via
shapeshifter then declare your attack phase.
5.) your shapeshifter is now an inkshrouder.
6.) use inkshrouder's ability by discarding phage and to turn it into an
unblockable and untargettable steam train.
7.) voila, your shapeshifter is now a 4/4 untargettable, unblockable
creature which kills your opponent after it deals damage
the rest of the deck is self explanatory, duress and force of will keep
control and other combo decks in check so that they don't go crazy on
you and pull their one turn wins.
kegs, which were a part of my original build have been removed because
playtesting shows that akroma, morphling, masticore takes care of
weenies better, multani takes care of control if you can't get phage out
or if you get careless and it gets plowed -
the original deck's problem with it's lack of ways to deal with other
BIG creatures once it hits- is solved by adding gilded drake or
tradewind rider
genesis can be added by people who use the deck the first time, they
makes sure that you can comeback if you do make a timing mistake--- and
YOU WILL--- after you play it your first time- this should get easier
the longer you play with the deck. and soon you can omit genesis if
you're confident of your deck playing skills.
cards NECESSARY aka: irreplacable
phage, inkshrouder, survival, squee, birds of paradise, tutors.
cards that can be subbed:
1.) wall of roots- any decent wall that costs 2 mana would be fine-
although not as effective.
2.) duress- can be replaced with additional countermagic. (mana leaks)
3.) moxen & lotus- can be replaced with additional fetch lands/dual
lands
4.) brainstorm- c'mon it's brainstorm! go out and buy it
timewalk & ancestral- nothing even comes close- if you don't have
it, sub it with other control cards- never EVER sub it with sub-par
cards like time warp etc.
5.) ancestral recall, timewalk- really can't be replaced, you're better
off using more control elements or more impulses or powder kegs. |
