Deck Definition Primer: Bazaar & Bazaar Madness
quoted from http://boards1.wizards.com
by Legend of Phase (Bazaar) and Glenchuy (Bazaar Madness)

[Home]

Bazaar. The lost decktype. T1 players these days dont know what they are missing, What are they missing? They are missing the ORIGINAL Mono-Black reanimator, Yep, The very first one, And the best one by far.

Bazaar reanimates with the combo Song of the Damned / Living Death. With Bazaar of Baghad to lose creatures into the graveyard, Then song of the damned to generate the mana to play living death. This can be done turn 3, making the win on turn 4 or 5.

But usually, Bazaar isnt going to win turn 3, It can easily, but somes it just cant and wont. This is where the disruption category comes into play, While waiting to topdeck a Bazaar or to combo, Keep your opponent busy! it is important that your opponent doesnt get advantage over you, or something will be removed. Duress him and remove any counters first priority, combo pieces second priority.

Getting a hand with Bazaar, Duress, Hymn to Tourach, Phyrexian Negator, Dark Ritual, Swamp, Juzam Djinn makes for a tough decision for a new player, The decision is, First turn bazaar, Or first turn Swamp,Ritual,Duress,Hymn. The choice is quite simple for someone that plays pox or void, Go with the first turn Disruption, Trust me, It will gain you almost complete control over the tabletop for a few turns, This gives you plenty of time to establish the combo, and by the time your opponent can play something that helps him, the games over.

When playing the deck, Remember that hardcasting creatures should NOT be a option untill turn 5, Once turn 5 hits, Or you are struck under 10 life, Its time to forget bazaar and start hardcasting, Hardcast shades or djinn, keep negators unless its a emergency. Hardcasting is the last attempt of a desperate man, You probably arent going to win if you start hardcasting, Thats the biggest mistake of a newbie to Bazaar, Dont do it!.

Once you've comboed, Youll have 5 or more creatures on the field, and your opponent will have none, giving that he didnt lose any creatures already. This deck doesnt pack creature removal for that reason, it doesnt need it. With 5 of more creatures on field, 8 in the deck are 5/5s, You can likely get in for the win next turn or the turn after.

Here is the long awaited bazaar decklist, enjoy it, Modify it, And learn it! Remember that, If your on a budget, Power9 need not be played, Not that bazaar isnt a 35 dollar card in the first place. Point being: The deck is expensive, Juzam Djinns can run for 200 each, But with all the fun ive had with the deck, its certainly worth the cash.

Bazaar Madness mini-primer

Madness was a type two deck created when Torment came out.

The madness mechanic basically turns "card disadvantage" into "card advantage" by doing either of the following:

1.) gaining cards instead of discarding them
2.) gaining creatures instead of losing them
3.) playing cheaper spells instead of paying their full cost.

They are achieved by using the best madness cards available-

Basking Rootwalla, Fiery Temper, Violent Eruption.

And a few very good cards with "flashback"- a mechanic first introduced in Oddesey

Roar of the Wurm, Deep Analysis,

Last, but not least, Judgement incarnations, which give your creatures haste and flying when they go to the graveyard.

Anger, Wonder

For reference:

//NAME: Bazaar Madness, UGR Oath
// Mana (20)
4 Wooded Foothills
3 Tropical Island
3 Volcanic Island
3 Taiga
1 Forest
R Mox Sapphire
R Mox Ruby
R Mox Emerald
R Lotus Petal
R Sol Ring
R Black Lotus
// Outlets (12)
4 Wild Mongrel
4 Bazaar of Baghdad
R Lion's Eye Diamond
R Wheel of Fortune
R Frantic Search
R Windfall
// Inlets (24)
4 Basking Rootwalla
4 Arrogant Wurm
4 Fiery Temper
3 Roar of the Wurm
3 Wonder
3 Anger
3 Violent Eruption
// Tricks (5)
3 Oath of Scholars
1 Time Walk
1 Ancestral Recall

This deck plays like a traditional aggro deck, but with a small twist. Instead of casting first turn weenies in the hopes of drawing first blood and finishing before your opponent has a chance to set up, this deck plays fatties but finishes just as fast as the traditional aggro decks sligh and stompy.

The mana base is pretty obvious. You'll be playing with red/gree/blue spells, use appropriate dual lands and fetch lands.

With the restriction of Lion’s Eye Diamond, there are now only even fewer ways to discard using this deck, all of the “outlet” cards- or cards which enable you to discard are irreplaceable.

At this point, one might ask- is it possible to build a budget version of this deck? or- “I can’t afford Bazaar of Baghdad” or “I only have X Bazaar of Baghdad”, what other cards can I use to compensate for it?

Although I would really oppose any means to replace Bazaar of Baghdad with any other ways to fill your graveyard, the following can be used in its place, just don’t expect to win that often with it.

1.) Aquamoeba

The best thing to use in the absence of one of the components. It’s a two drop, much like Wild Mongrel, and needs no mana to activate aside from the initial casting cost.

2.) Careful Study

This card is a one time use Bazaar of Baghdad, you lose 3 cards (-1 Careful Study, -2 cards discarded) and you gain 2 cards to replace it.

3.) Compulsion

This might seem like an okay card at first, but the casting cost AND activation cost just makes it too slow to be of any use in any aggro decks such as Bazaar Madness. Additionally, you only get to cycle one card a turn, and for a hefty cost of 1U.

Don't be fooled, the deck is extremely fast, Wonder and Anger also makes all gives all your fatties flying and haste.

Time walk, Ancestral recall, are there due to their general brokenness, and Oath of Scholars is just superb in a deck wherein you want to dump as many cards in your hand into your graveyard.

The trick involving the use of lion's eye diamond, is activating it in response to your spell- (before you pass priority) to get the mana and reduce the number of spells you have to discard-

Fiery Temper and Violent Eruption are there to make sure you don't die first to other aggro decks, and they can always be thrown to your opponent if you're playing against control, side them out against combo

Frantic search is great in this deck as it's a "free"- Arrogant Wurm and draw 2 cards, and Wheel of Fortune and Windfall are in, because of they general unbalancing effect- especially when played in this deck- and in conjunction with Lion’s Eye Diamond.

With T1 gaining ground and more and more people starting to play the format, I’m getting more and more emails on how to build budget versions of decks, it’s still viable, but just don’t expect too much from it J

Budget Version, no power, no moxen, no individual cards over $30

//NAME: Bazaar Madness, UGR Oath
// Mana (21)
4 Wooded Foothills
4 Tropical Island
4 Volcanic Island
4 Taiga
3 Forest
R Sol Ring
R Lotus Petal
// Outlets (15)
4 Wild Mongrel
4 Aquamoeba
4 Careful Study
R Lion's Eye Diamond
R Wheel of Fortune
R Frantic Search
// Inlets (24)
4 Basking Rootwalla
4 Arrogant Wurm
4 Fiery Temper
4 Roar of the Wurm
4 Violent Eruption
3 Wonder
3 Anger

Oath of Scholars was cut, as without fast mana like moxen and lotus, there’s just no way of putting it out fast enough for it to be effective. If you’re metagame is slow, it might still be viable to use them, but use two at most.

Windfall was cut because you will not be able to empty your hand fast enough (while leaving your opponent’s hand full of cards) to enable it to be effective.

What are the appropriate sideboard cards?
Artifact Mutation, Rack and Ruin
Takes care of artifact based decks, Artifact Mutation is especially brutal against Stax as it removes a threat, and gives you tokens to tap or sacrifice.

Tormod’s Crypt, Pyrostatic Pillar, Blue Elemental Blast
Used against Dragon.dec. Tormod’s Crypt has the added advantage of taking slowing other decks like Hulk Smash, and Welder. Blue Elemental Blast may be favored in Sligh infested metas, although sligh shouldn’t really be a very big problem since you’ll have burn for his creatures, and bigger creatures for his burn.

Gilded Drake
This is used against a metagame where there are a lot of fatties. Takes care of Benzo, and is brutal in the mirror.

Red Elemental Blast
The pesky red instant takes care of blue mages, one of the best counterspells available.

Null Rod
This takes care of your opponent’s moxen, and also takes care of Scepter.dec, Scepter OSE, or Scepter Keeper, you’ll still have to get it into play to be effective, but it slows the opposing deck down, and gives them another “must counter/must remove” artifact
