Brass Herald is one of those cards I sought for like you wouldn't
believe. When I bought two boxes of Apocalypse, I still didn't get
enough. I went to three different hobby shops in search for more
just so I could fill all of my off-the-wall and crazy theme decks with it.
Coat of Arms works well, but
Brass Herald is better (in my
opinion). Not only does he act as a Lord of
Atlantis (minus the landwalk) for your
Druids, Minions or Assasins, but he gives you card advantage to
boot. That and, unlike the Coat of Arms, the Herald is localized and
only affects one creature type, as oppose to all creature types. So
in the end, after I bought out all of the local shops around me of this great
card, I now own approximately 50 Heralds. Call me obsessed, but I
truly enjoy and like this card. My Dryad deck love it. My
Golem deck really loves it.. and even my Wizard decks loves it.
Well, I write as if my decks were sentient... what I mean to say is I love
it in those decks. As a final comment about the card, it is
uncommon. Elvish Champion,
Goblin King, Lord
of Atlantis, Lord of the
Undead, etc... are all rare. This guy you can pick up for cheap
and there more of him around than atleast the Lord
of the Undead.
Brass Herald
fits well into the mana curve of any deck. Six mana has
anywhere from 2-8 positions in an average deck, and the herald could take
2-4 four of those slots. For tight decks, just one Brass Herald
works fine. It's too bad Tinker is restricted/banned in some
formats. What's really nice about the Brass Herald
is the basic fact
that it is an artifact. With this in mind, you could use it for any
color combination, even artifact creatures like Chimeras, Golems, Licids, Slivers,
etc. Now, for the
antagonists out there, you are probably saying, "but the mana cost is
WAY too high!" Even Anthony Alongi on mtg.com
thinks that this card sucks. However, I strongly disagree. Think of it like this, you could net up to four
cards from this card and you get a 2/2 creature and all of your
whatever creatures get +1/+1. Let's break it the mana down to prove
that this card is well costed: The
2/2 creature alone would normally cost you atleast 3 mana (Proteus
Machine, Horrible Hordes, Onulet,
Hopping Automaton, Transmogrifying
Licid,
Sparring Golem, Serrated
Biskelion). Many of these creatures have an
additional ability, but never have I seen a 2/2 artifact creature for less
than 3 colorless mana (unless there is some major drawback).
Techically, I think the 2/2 creature equals about 2.5 mana, but since
magic doesn't do decimals, will consider this 3 colorless mana. +3
Colorless Mana Then you have
the ability to draw up to four cards given that they are all creatures of
the announced type. Enlistment Officer does the same thing and costs
3W (with a 2/2 creature). With this in mind, I would think that the
ability to draw possibly 4 cards who be about 2 colorless mana. If I
was to think about one card per mana, I would say four colorless mana for
this ability. However, when looking at other cards like the Chromatic
Sphere, drawing a card might be less than one mana. On
average, you might draw two cards with this ability, so, in conclusion,
let's say this ability is 2. +2
Colorless Mana Finally,
there is the ability to target one creature with the +1/+1
ability. Since this is always seen on a colored card (such as
Goblin King, Lord of
Atlantis, or Thrull Champion) I would gander that
the ability is about 2 to 3 colorless mana. Let's go with 2
colorless mana. You have to assume that what one colored mana can do,
1.5-2 colorless mana would do.
+2
Colorless Mana. We have an
artifact that would normally run for 7+ mana for 6 mana. Coat of
Arms, which isn't a creature is 5 mana, but it affects all creatures on
the board. Brass Herald is limited but effective. With all
else aside, 6 mana is perfect for this creature. It's a late game
boost with card advantage and creature advantage. I
believe I am not alone is thinking this is a great card. They would
not have reprinted it in 8th Edition unless it was as good or better than
coat of arms so please enjoy the rest of this featured card page.
Below you will find other cards (not just artifacts) that share similar
abilities with the Brass Herald, you will find decks using the
Brass Herald, and also some basic information for the card. Enjoy! |
