MDV Featured Article - Fit the Flavor 2008 - Round Three! - by Chris Newton - posted 7/7/08 - discuss here

We are back! Week three of the Fit the Flavor major contest hits today. Are you ready to step your game up and take over the lead? The scores for round one are up, now let’s see where we are in the MSS, as this contest will have a huge impact on it.

Don’t worry guys, I know how to get you to read. Everyone likes to see their name in print, and I am doing some nice name dropping here. If you think you are doing good in the Overall Contest, step inside, and you might just find yourself in the news.

Welcome back to Fit the Flavor 2008. We head into the third week of the contest now with a lot of momentum. Not only do we now have people jockeying for position, but we also have some people showing signs of fatigue in the overall points chase.

Originally, it may have been a forgone conclusion that Ryuzaki would be hard to catch since his victory in Idol gave him a big head start. However, even after coming out of that contest and working hard for the remainder of March, building a good lead, he was not ever able to shake Your Worst Nightmare (YWN). He just stayed the course, placed high in the smaller events and just withstood the onslaught that Ryu released.

Eventually, we would get to the day, today, where I can say that YWN has overtaken Ryu in the Overall Points Chase. With May finally coming to a close, and June waiting for Fit the Flavor and Darksteel Designer 8 to be closed, YWN holds a 39.2 point lead over Ryu.

Let’s compare for a moment the top five scores in each month of competition, just to show you what I mean by YWN just being consistent:

March 2008
Placement MSS Score Member
1st 212 Ryuzaki
2nd 190 YWN
3rd 167 Shakadelic
4th 158 Luthervamplord
5th 145 Tekkactus
April 2008
Placement Score Member
1st 122.8 Azrael Subucni
2nd 114.5 Maleficent
3rd 110 Thunderhog
4th 109.5 Ryzaki
5th 107.5 YWN
May 2008
Placement Score Member
1st 94 Azrael Subucni
2nd 93.5 Maleficent
3rd 83 final_press
4th 78.5 YWN
5th 78 Shakadelic

Being a long running contest, a person who can constantly be in the top five score will find themselves always at the top of the Overall Scoreboard. However, sometimes you just need to gut it out and just win. That is exactly what my man Azrael Subucni has done.

Consider for a moment that the man finished 22nd in Idol 3. I remember entering his first scorecard and being annoyed that I had to stare at his last name and fight with my fingers to get it spelled right. “Who the heck? All of this fighting for a guy I’ll never hear of again.”

Look who is eating crow. And look who is the first two-time and back to back Monthly Chase winner.

He pounded people in April and then edged Maleficent by half a point in May. Whatever it takes right? More impressively than that, let me show you his scorecard. Mind you: This is the first time anyone not named Tynion has ever seen a scorecard. You should feel special. Go on… Feel special!

Ok, quit now, everyone else is seeing it too, so how special are you really? Silly goose!

Azrael Subucni

Contest Place Score
MDV Idol 3, A Mysterious Twist 22 45
March MDV Newsletter Art Contest n/a 11
March Monthly Card Creation 5 48
Fit the Flavor, Round 2 3 22.5
Darksteel Designer, Round 6 1 20.8
April Monthly Card Creation 4 60
Darksteel Designer, Round 7 2 19.5
MOMP: Jarhead n/a 15
Fit the Flavor, Round 4 8 9
Sapardian Empires Contest 8 4
May Monthly Card Creation 1 51
Fit the Flavor, Round 5 2 15

Wow! Look at all of those 1st’s and 2nd’s. (The 11 in March MDV Newsletter is a 1st as well as the MOMP: Jarhead)

Just like anything else though, you can not be great if you don’t have a rival to push you. While it might appear at first glance that YWN would be a good rival for Azrael, I’d say that Maleficent is a better fit. You’ll remember that both times Azrael won the Monthly Chase, he beat out Maleficent. You’ll also note that Mal is getting closer, having only lost by half a point in May. A strong placing in both the June Monthly Card Creation and Fit the Flavor 2008 could push Mal over that hump and into his own spotlight, but until then, it is owned by Azrael.

I am going to start a new tradition here for the MSS, and that is the Power Rankings. I am going to rank the top players in the league and adjust that list as the weeks roll by. The following is your first MSS Power Ranking:

Standing Points Points Rating Avg. Placing Participant
1st 376 37.60 4.20 Your Worst Nightmare
2nd 320.8 32.08 5.60 Azrael Subucni
3rd 329 32.90 5.60 Maleficent
4th 318 24.46 5.77 ThunderHog
5th 336.8 33.68 5.10 Ryuzaki
6th 311 23.92 7.92 ShaKadelic
7th 113 22.60 6.00 final_press
8th 257.5 32.19 8.25 Luthervamplord
9th 210 52.50 8.50 Female_kaldra_is_hot
10th 178.5 29.75 4.67 Cashew
11th 78 13.00 7.00 Niv-Mizzet_Rulez!
12th 136.5 15.17 7.89 Tynion
13th 84 10.50 10.25 Frychkin
14th 85.5 14.25 9.50 GG Crono
15th 157 12.08 11.08 Zaknifa
16th 143 28.60 9.00 AlasterEisaroh
17th 34.5 6.90 9.00 CoglineErro
18th 98.5 16.42 11.67 KlassyReborn
19th 149 29.80 8.80 3nd3r
20th 69.5 8.69 11.38 12q34e
21st 74 18.50 9.75 Micheal_Zeora
22nd 27 9.00 2.33 Yawgmoth
23rd 31.5 7.88 9.50 Friend_Mairsil

The chart above is based on my opinion. I think that if I held a random contest right now, and everyone entered, this is where I think we would finish. It is not based on anything except on what I have witnessed as all the contests have unfolded. These are the most active and top players in the MSS, and this is how I rank them. If you want to break into the rankings, then you need to step your game up, find the contest that these people are in and beat them.
