MDV Idol 3: The Judging! -
by Chris Newton, Death_By_Beebles & Streetz - posted 3/20/08 - discuss

Last
weekend we rounded up the contestants and grouped them up. Then all last week
you guys cast your votes and eliminated the weaker cards of each group.
Now all that is left is for you to decide the winner of MDV
Idol right?
Wrong! It’s time for some fun, as the Judges sit down and
review the finalists.
THIS is MDV Idol!
I
love that intro music. It makes me want to smile a little bit and dance a lot
bit.
When we started the contest two weeks ago, we had no idea
how many people would get involved. The first contest had over 40 contestants,
while the second one had a little over 20. Would Idol 3 be destined to continue
the downward spiral, or could it rebound and gain some momentum?
Well, you guys stepped it up and brought a few friends, as
we reached 30 contestants. It is really nice when there is a nice round number,
especially when there is a multiple of five and we have five groups. It makes
for a very balanced distribution of entries. However, some of the submissions
didn’t take to the whole ‘balance’ thing very well. They decided to start out of
the box and steam roll over, around, and through the other guys and win in a
runaway.
Are these cards really that good or were they supported by
poor competition? Would they have won so handily if they were paired together?
The good news is that we get a chance to find that out
during this week of voting.
Keeping with the spirit of the Mysterious Twist,
there was one more piece of the puzzle that was kept hidden from you, hopefully
inspiring you to new heights with your designs. That piece was your opponent’s
hand. What could possibly be in it? What were those three cards that could
affect the outcome of this combat? Would they sway the tide of battle towards
you or away from you? How about if I tell you those cards now, and we can
include that information in both the Judges panel, and in your vote for the
Finalists.
Card A:

Card B:

Card C:

What
do those cards mean? It means that when you declare your block with a 2/2 face
down creature, the Fault Rider will be activated, with a sacrifice of a newly
tapped land – making him a 4/2 First Strike. That would be followed up with a
Fatal Frenzy, making the Rider a 8/2 First Strike, Trample creature. If you
didn’t flip your creature, you would take six trample damage and would die. If
you flipped your creature and it had an ability targeting the Rider, then
Stonewood Invocation would make the Rider a 13/7 First Strike, Trample, with
Shroud – making your targeting ability fizzle.
Now, there were a few ‘easy way out’ scenarios that were
thought about. Effort went into the contest design to make certain these would
not survive the attack. For example, just making a creature with five toughness
would not do it. Making a creature that would flip and destroy the Fault Rider
with a targeting ability would not do it. Giving your creature Protection from
Red would not do it either. You really needed to put some thought into your
design and use a strategy. You knew that your opponent had access to Red, Green,
and Black mana. There were plenty of things you could have thought about in an
effort of surviving the attack. Here were a few:
Red likes to blast damage.
Green likes to make big creatures bigger.
Black likes to kill creatures.
I could go on with more, but the point to be made is this,
MDV Idol has never been an easy contest, and making just any card is not going
to win you the contest.

With that, let’s see what the Judges think of who you
chose to be the winner of Group A: |
|
|
ShaKadelic - Tartarus // Elysium
Tartarus 2R
Creature - Avatar
Morph 1RR
When Tartarus is turned face up, it does 2 damage to each other
nonflying creature.
2: Turn Tartarus face down.
3/1
"Upon arrival, it sings the song of pain."
Elysium 2W
Creature - Avatar
Morph 1WW
When Elysium is turned face up, all creatures you control gain
protection from the color of your choice until end of turn.
2: Turn Elysium face down.
1/3
"Upon arrival, it sings the song of salvation."
|
|
 |
Well, having knowledge of the opponent’s hands really
reveals the weakness of some of the designs. In this instance, Tartarus
turns face up, he attempts to kill the Rider, however once the spells in the
opponent’s hand resolve, then everything goes haywire. Contrast that with
Elysium and… well there is no contrast, trample damage stinks when the
creature is huge. Outside of the contest,
being able to practically Pyroclasm every turn for RR3 is a little strong. |
|
 |
Actually, Tynion, RR3 for 2 damage, RRRR6 for 4 damage and
so on seems rather balanced to me. I really like how either side of
this card can flip it self back down to real the other side whenever you
want. I think SkaKadelic is onto to something here.
Offtopic, I know, but has anyone checked out my latest
audiotape about judging contests? It's the number one seller on
iAudioTapes.com. *grins* |
|
 |
It was a unique idea, and certainly fit the idea of the
competition. Unfortunately, it lacked a certain essence I was looking for.
Ultimately, while I was not awed by this card, it did get the job done; not
great, but not bad either. |
We
will find out who won Group B, right after this..
|
|
...COMMERCIAL BREAK... |
|
“That dinosaur is going to eat me!”
“Sh.. sh… Quiet before it finds us.”
“But Sal…”
“I’m gonna Sal you! Shut up!”
*The two goblins cowered in the bush. A casual
observer would note that the bush was shaking vigorously and that there
was no a leaf to be found on the bush.*
“Sal, it is coming right at us.” *He got up to run,
but Sal pounces on him.*
“Get ahold of yourself. If you get out of this
bush, it will get you for sure. I just saved your life Mel. Thank me
later.” *He pushed Mel’s head into the ground and hoisted himself to
return to the bush. Upon turning around, he found himself staring face
to face with the raptor. Sizing himself versus the raptor, even the
foolish goblin knew he was about to bite the big one, but decided to
test old goblin lore first. Turning, he ran as fast as he could towards
Mel and jumped on his back.*
“I don’t have to out run the dinosaur Mel, I just
have to out run you!” *He began running as fast as his little goblin
legs could take him. A look over his shoulder revealed that there may
have been some truth to the old lore, as the raptor busied himself with
the business at hand, that being Mel. Smiling to himself, he turned back
to his business at hand, running for his life, when suddenly…
*BAMMM!*
*From out of no where came the Burger King.
Lowering his shoulder, the King drove the small goblin to the ground
with a thud. Sal never knew what hit him. All he knew is that he needed
to get those birds out of way so he could breath. The King kneeled over
his fallen foe and reached behind himself. From behind his cape, he
produced a Whopper and offered it to Sal.*
*Camera fades to black, you hear a raptor shriek, a
goblin scream, and the King smile.*

Welcome back.
When I was talking earlier about the runaway winners,
Group B demonstrated exactly what I was talking about. Ryuzaki crushed his
group by a dominating 12 votes. Was his design really that good? Let’s see
what the Judges think: |
|
|
Ryuzaki - Bitter // Sweet - Rare
Bitter 2B
Creature - Horror
Fear
When ~ is flipped face-up, each opponent sacrifices a creature.
Morph 1B
3/2
"Misery loves company, Bitter does not."
Sweet 2W
Creature - Angel
Flying
When Sweet is flipped face-up, you can't lose the game this turn and
your opponents can't win the game this turn. Until end of turn, damage
that would reduce your life total to less than 1 reduces it to 1
instead.
Morph 1W
"Nothing tastes sweeter then the kiss of an angel."
2/3
|
|
 |
Wow, look at Ryuzaki bringing out the big guns for this
Idol competition. When talking about the ‘YO!’ factor, I think they had this
guy in mind. Either way that you go, the contest is satisfied, which scores
big in the Contest Flavor category. Further, I think he did a really good
job making each side of the card balanced and the fact that the flavors make
sense goes in the direction of me saying, “YO! That is tight!” |
|
 |
Did anyone ever tell you that life at its best is
bittersweet? After looking at this card, I think life has just got a
little bit sweeter for me, and bitter for my opponent. This is a
fabulous design and really makes me want to dance.
Go Ryuzaki, Go!
By the way, are you related to CJS? |
|
 |
It's boring. I need something provocative, something
unique! Bitter is just a rehash of the crowd favorite Shriekmaw, and Sweet
is just Angel's Grace on a body. Neither was inspiring. |
Right,
could they be more contrasting? Anyways, Group C turned out to be the most
competitive group of the five. Four of the contestant scored in the ballpark
of victory, yet one deciding vote separated the winner from the second place
finisher. Judges… your thoughts? |
|
|
3nder - Here // There
Here 1U
Creature- Spirit
When this card is turned face up gain control of target creature until
end of turn.
Morph 3UU
"Is it here......"
1/1
There 2U
Creature- Spirit
When this card is turned face up return target permanent to it's owners
hand.
At end of turn you may turn this card face down.
Morph 3U
"....... or is it there???"
2/2
|
|
 |
Apparently, 3nder never saw Stonewood Invocation coming,
as it wrecks the entire plan of his. Had the Invocation not been in his
opponent’s hand, it would have been able easily not only survive the attack,
but change the entire tide of the match. The
bottomline is that the card is sitting there, and now is on the stack, so
what now 3nder? |
|
 |
*laughs out load* Here or There?! I love it.
It's so poetic, yet simple. So cool yet so casual. While I have to
agree with Tynion that this card never saw Stonewood Invocation coming, it
gets around both of the other two cards. I
just love it! |
|
 |
The double blue immediately put me off of this "card" if
indeed, that's what you'd like to call it, and I'm even more concerned about
the power level of this card; to be frank, it's just quite bad. And, to make
it worse, the Morph costs are nearly the same.
No ingenuity, no forethought. |

*Clears throat to break the awkwardness…* Just like
Ryuzaki in Group B, Tekkactus took no prisoners in his quest for card design
mastery. Winning in a landslide is not easy, but Tekk certainly made it look
so… |
|
|
Tekkactus – Search // Seizure
Search 3U
Creature- Humonculus
When Search is turned face up, you may look at target player's hand and
choose any number of cards from it. Remove those cards from the game
face down. That player draws that many cards. Then look at the removed
cards and put them on top of that player's library in any order.
Morph 2UU
1/5
Seizure 2RR
Creature- Humonculus
When Seizure is turned face up, until end of turn whenever a creature
would deal combat damage, it deals that much damage to itself instead.
Morph 2R
3/3
|
|
 |
This is an interesting submission, as one side of the card
only triggers the opponent to unleash every card in his hand, while the
other side of the coin solved the problem with a White ability on a Red
card. Not sold? Try reading Repentance and Wave of Reckoning.
In all honesty, I think that if this card had the ill luck
of being paired in Group C, it most likely would not have made it to the
finals. |
|
 |
Tekkactus, you are a wonderful person. And so is
this card. It is a true telling of your capabilities and level of card
creativeness. Don't let the humdrum or stress of life ever bring you
down because you can always refer back to this wonderful piece of work, this
awesome submission to MDV IDOL 3.
*Streetz stands up and waves his hands, trying to drum
up some applause...* |
|
 |
Unique abilities with a sense of purpose, good naming, and
elegant costing make this creature truly one to behold. My favorite of all
the winners. |
Wow…
Next, Group E provided a little bit more of a balanced field. There were
three horses running in this contest, but when two pulled up lame, one horse
pushed on hard and reached the finish line with the momentum of his fans. |
|
|
Your Worst Nightmare – Gulliver // Gulliver
Gulliver - 4R
Legendary Creature - Dwarf
All other creatures get +3/+3.
Morph 3R
2/2
Gulliver - 4R
Legendary Creature - Giant
All other creatures get -3/-3. If this effect would reduce a creature's
toughness to less than 1, it reduces it to 1 instead.
Morph 3R
2/2
|
|
 |
I don’t understand this one. So when I flip the card to
reveal the morph costs, I then announce that I want to pay the morph cost of
the side called Gulliver. “Which one?” The one that has the morph cost of
R3. “Which one?” I think that the idea is
cool, but just a little confusing in actually use. Then, if you use side
number two that reduces the other creatures by -3, it doesn’t kill the other
creatures, which proves to be it’s undoing as the creature becomes a 1/1
after the land sacrifice, then a 2/1 after the frenzy, and then a 7/6
creature that deals five trample damage… or it could just Terror the Giant,
and trample the entire amount…
Oh, an unlike other submissions, you could not utilize
the other half if you cast a second one… they have the same name. |
|
 |
Well, YWN, I have to say... I mean... Can I call you YWN?
Well, this is, quite, uh... it's really... good. I
mean you did a good job using the same name on both cards and costing the
morphs the same. You have a good sense of duality and sharing. I
appreciate that.
Um, keep up the good work! Yeah, that's right... |
|
 |
Your Worst Nightmare's "Gulliver // Gulliver" is actually
the worst of all the designed cards here. It has two creatures with the same
mana cost, the same Morph cost, and abilities that have no place in Red.
There's no way to distinguish which morph you made! Atrocious. |
Atrocious!
Ow… Before we get to the good stuff that is voting on the MDV Idol, I’d like
to ask the Judges who they would vote for if they could. Obviously, they
can’t vote on their own contest, so let’s see what they think who of the
five contestants should be the Next MDV Idol. |
|
 |
Oh, well I think it is Ryuzaki. That is if it was based
purely on contest design and intent. It has been proven so far that this is
just as much a popularity contest as a card creation contest. |
|
 |
You know, I can't really say. They all did some a
wonderful job of designing cards and posting in the forum and entering the
contest and being a member of the site. They are all so positive and
wonderful people and deserve the sweeter part of a bittersweet life. *grin*
I just can't pick just one, they all deserve to win! |
|
 |
Tekkactus. It was unique, and it was a well designed and
developed card. I can't say that for anyone else who submitted to this
round. |

There you have it. Fair an unbiased. I hope you have
enjoyed this edition of MDV Idol. It is time for you to be heard one more
time. Get out there and vote! |
*music begins to play… and suddenly slurs and fades away*
Oh,
*ehem* I almost forgot… there is one more Twist to this contest.
You will be voting blind. That’s right; there will not be a public vote for you
to watch. Instead, you are to go into the forums, read the Finalist cards, and
send in your vote to the PM link provided. Your vote will be sent to Tynion, who
will collect the votes and hold them secret until the end of the voting period.
Who will be the Next MDV Idol? It will be a Mystery
until we meet again.
Thanks for reading, now get to voting!
Tune in Friday, March 28th for the Idol Finale’.
