Folks I've been given the chance to bring you guys a special present: The MDV Christmas Contest! Let's end the year on a good note and make this contest the biggest MDV has seen this year! But before I tell you what the contest is, I want to tell you a little story. There is one Christmas that I will always remember till the end of my days; I was seven years old and it was the last white Christmas that I have ever had. I've never been the tallest guy on the planet and the snow was coming in thick. The land looked like it had been painted by the caring hands of a master artist, great swaths of white marred with the occasional patch of black and dark browns, the snow glinting off a never moving river; held tight in a cold embrace. There are few things in this world that have ever made me stop and pay attention but that winter did it; I know it sounds corny but there was something in the air, an intangible quality that made me stop and enjoy that winter for just a few moments more. By now you're are probably wondering what this has to do with this contest - My friends it has everything to do with the overall feel of this contest. Here's the challenge, I want you to construct or reconstruct your version of a deck that made you stop and take notice - That one deck that changed the way you played the game, the way you reasoned out the threats and your overall approach to a game. The deck must follow the usual deck building rules, plus one extra:
You must include a full write-up of the deck, about a third of a page to two pages max talking about how to play the deck and why/how it affected your game. I won't be marking you on grammar and spelling but if I can't understand your entry then I will hold that against your score. On good advice, here's an example of a good submission:
This deck broke my misguided belief that only a mono-U deck could really achieve true board control; never before had I seen a deck that could so consistently take and re-take the field of play back from the opponent and punish them hard. The balance of combo power, control and beats just captivated me and I'm sure I lost against this deck sometimes due to a sense of blindness to the inherent weaknesses of this deck - but at the time this was 'the' deck to beat for me, the one challenge in my gaming circle which consistently thwarted my efforts. The deck is built around a recycling Wrath engine, using the Isochron Scepter's, Eternal Witness and Otherworldly Journey to achieve a creature lock. Hikari acts in addition to the combo as the beatstick for the deck, as a 4/4 evasive monster of pain with an inbuilt blink ability he was just the perfect tool for the job. Entrants will be scored on the construction and obscurity
of the deck; so don't rely on Necropotence and Tog decks to get you through. A
total of twenty points will be up for grabs on this part. So to summarize:
As a quick note, there are three judges for this contest - Me, myself and I. This is to ensure a quick and assured turn around, though I do agree this means the results 'may' be open to some scrutiny on your behalf, I only hope that you can trust me to be fair and honest as possible. Closing date for entrants will be 22:00 (GMT) Christmas Eve itself - rather fitting for a Christmas contest I feel; with the results posted on Monday 7th January 2008. All entrants must be submitted via email to email or via PM through the forums.
