MDV Featured Article - MDV Idol: Bestest Broken Card Contest! - by MDV Staff - posted 6/23/06 - Enter the contest here!

Note: We are extending the due date for submissions since the forums have been down for several days.  The new deadline will be Friday, 7/7/06.  Thanks ~Streetz~

7/7/06 Reminder: All submissions are due today.  You have the option of editing your submission by 7/9/06.  After that, the judges will make their remarks.. and the contest judging will start.  ~Streetz~

Over the years, players have abused Magic cards created by Wizards, originally intended to be good or average cards, until Wizards were forced to restrict them. (Such as Necropotence, Land Tax, and the Wishes.) There were times in the past, however, when cards were just simply broken from the moment that they left the printer.

This contest is a tribute to those cards who did not need a sidekick to be powerful. To those cards that define the restricted list of Vintage. To the cards that emanate power from thier printed cardboard bodies. This tribute is to those cards that inspire the beginning of the end, or the end itself.

A quick glance at the restricted list reveals a collection of undercosted, high efficiency, lethal potency cards, that take the very breath away from an opponent.

Here is your chance to give your best attempt at making the next card that would be restricted or banned before it even made it to the Pre-Release Tournament.

Your objective, as a card designer, is to make the 10th card of the Power 9 (Mox Emerald, Jet, Sapphire, Ruby, and Pearl, Black Lotus, Time Walk, Timetwister, Ancestral Recall). We are not interested in cream puffs like Morphling, Oath of Druids, or Upheaval. We don't want more watered down, re-hashed cards like Timespiral, Balancing Act, or Diminishing Returns. We want power!

We are looking for cards with power in the range of Library of Alexandria, Balance, Demonic Tutor, Mind's Desire, Memory jar, etc.

Guidelines:

  • All entries must be posted in the forum.
  • You must submit your entry no later than 7/7/06.
  • You must design your card according to the guidelines and template posted at the top of the forum (without the color symbols... just use WUBRG)
  • Your card must have flavor text.
  • Your card needs to be playable in Vintage. This means that it should be powerful, but not stupid (Judges discretion).
  • Your card can not include ante, flipping, or any other mechanic removed by Wizards over the years.
  • Your entry can be any card type, but must be a current card type (Instant, Sorcery, Artifact, Enchantment, Creature, Land )
  • You are allowed to edit your entry before 7/9/06.
  • Make your card as flavorable as possible. We are still a site for the Casual Player.
  • Your card should be designed as if it is part of the basic set, not Celexia, nor any other expansion set released by Wizards in the past, present, or future.
  • Do NOT post a card picture, just post the text version of your card. If you find a really cool picture - ONLY LINK TO IT.

Rules:

  • Registration will run for a week.
  • Following the registration, there will be three days for voting by the fans, where you can cast one vote for any of the cards registered. (Done by a poll.)
  • The top five vote getting cards will then be judged by the three Judges, and a winner will be selected!

All entries will have to be submitted in the forum.  The thread link is below.

Good luck!

Judges:
Streetz
Tynion
Death By Beebles

So what are you waiting for? Get your creative juices flowing and get to designing!
