MDV Featured Article - Change is inevitable... - by Lionden_56 - posted 4/1/06 - discuss here

**4/2/06** This is an April Fool's Joke.  Feel free to discuss it in the forum.  ~Streetz~

As the second administrator of the official MDV forums, Streetz has asked me to speak on his behalf. Whether you are aware of it or not, a lot has been going on with MDV and pretty much Magic in general in the past few months. Wizards of the Coast has sued R_E, prompting seemingly global protests. A brand new expansion set, Coldsnap, has been announced. Visions, a set many people thought they would never see again, has resurfaced on the MTGO beta, and will be release for online play later this year. For MDV, articles are now being posted almost every day. The forums are blossoming at an amazing rate. The fictional set Celixia was used in a tournament, and Powershift is currently in the design stages. To sum things up: things are changing.

Perhaps the most demanding aspect of not only playing MTG, but running a web-site about it, is the time element. The writers all know this well from the forums, but Streetz has been very limited with time lately. Even this article, possibly the most important in MDV history, was passed to me, because Streetz flat out didn’t have time to write it. He wanted this to get posted ASAP, but didn’t have the time to write all he wanted to say. So, he asked me to say this for him. If you are standing, you may want to sit down. Streetz is selling MDV.

Read that again. Streetz is selling MDV. There were also many other aspects in this decision. It is more than just the time. As stated above, there is a lot going on in Magic right now, much of it controversial. The lawsuit, the new expansion, and even MTGO have all raised questions about how money-hungry Wizards really is. Remember when Magic was just a fun game that a group of people would get together and play on a weeknight or weekend? There is just too much drama going on in the game right now, and Streetz has had it. Life itself is stressful enough. When the hobbies you have to get away from it all start bringing up problems of their own, it is usually time to drop those hobbies. Instead, Streetz has decided to return to his hobby of singing. He has been looking for the time to return to his old chorus, the Westtowns Chorus, and has now finally found it.

The West Towns Chorus

I’m sure many of you are wondering who would buy MDV. After all, MDV is known to be “what the casual players use.” Most other sites you’ll see on the Internet are oriented more towards the competitive crowd. Star City Games is no exception. However, SCG has apparently realized that there is potential with the casual crowd, and has jumped on the opportunity. Basically, MDV will now be a subsidiary of SCG (like how WotC is a subsidiary of Hasbro). And don’t worry; it won’t be going under the SCG platinum portion of the site.

Leaving MDV is not easy for Streetz. In the email he sent me asking me to write this, he said, “This is the hardest thing I have ever had to do.” However, he feels that it must be done. MDV has had a good run under the leadership of John Streetz. It has grown from a few decks in a Microsoft Excel document to a thriving community. Streetz has a list of mission statements that he would have liked to see MDV achieve. I quote those statements:

To excel as a net provider of information regarding Magic: the Gathering.
To become a great CASUAL deck resource via content.
To gather great and unique decks from around the world.
To serve as a portal for all Magic: the Gathering players on the net.
To provide reference material to design decks.
To provide well written articles regarding casual magic.
To never charge money for any content on this site.

For every statement listed above, I’d have to say mission accomplished. MDV has been extremely successful. The deck database has grown from about 100 to over 1500. MDV is linked to by over 70 websites, web-rings, and web-portals all over the world. MDV even jumped to as high as #3 on Alexa’s list of best Magic sites. It is currently resting in 7th.

On behalf of Streetz, and as a somewhat high-ranking member of the MDV hierarchy myself, I would like to thank all the faithful members, supporters, and fans of Magic Deck Vortex. MDV could have never become as successful as it has without you. A website is nothing without a fan-base, and you guys have been one of the best fan-bases on the net. MDV thrives off your input. The deck database, the combo pages, the forums; they all survive because of your input. I hope that you continue to visit and support the site under its new management.

Other issues involved with this changeover are the forums and the community in general. SCG has its own forum system, so MDV’s forums aren’t really needed. However, Star City has seen our community, and is leaving the MDV forums intact. The MDV forums will still be connected to the MDV main site, which will also be left intact. There will be a large banner on SCG’s home page, linking to MDV. They have great respect for the community, and will gladly leave it alone. It’s always helpful to have a good base when you make a change as large as this.

Lastly, don’t forsake MDV just because of change. Yes, this is a pretty massive overhaul, but change isn’t always a bad thing. Magic Deck Vortex, the little site that could, is now going to be run by people that have much more time to dedicate to it than Streetz. It’s not that Streetz did a bad job in the time he poured into the site, but with the site being run by professionals who are affiliated with WotC, it can only mean bigger and better things for MDV. I hope that you all consider staying with MDV, and continue to use it as your resource to all things casual.

So, in conclusion, thank you to everyone who has made MDV a success over the past few years. As stated many times above, we couldn’t have done it without you. For those of you wondering what will happen to the rest of the Celixia block, be sure to stay tuned to MDV. There are a few surprises regarding Powershift that you won’t want to miss. The set is pretty awesome, so you won’t want to be the one who was left out. Don’t think of this as the end. Instead, think of it as a brand new beginning. I think the music group Semisonic sang it best: “Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.”

Oh, and by the way, from Magic Deck Vortex, I hope this, the first day of April, goes well for you!
