MDV Featured Article - A Look Ahead: Guildpact! - by Ninja Sloth - posted 12/16/05 - discuss here

MDV Guildpact Visual SpoilerHello and welcome to my first and hopefully not only article on Magic Deck Vortex. For those of you who don’t yet know who I am or what I’m going to be babbling about today I’m Ninja Sloth and I’ll be babbling about none other than Guildpact, the next expansion in the Ravnica block. I’m one of those people who can’t stop thinking about an upcoming event, be it a movie, video game, or obviously, Magic set.

Since I’m going to be talking about a set that is based on sets of two colored Guilds it seems to me that the most logical way to go about this would be to organize my thoughts by Guild. And so without further ado, my first article.

The Izzet- Red/Blue

The Izzet seem to be a very magic oriented guild from what has been seen so far. Obviously tracing back to their blue side, they seem to possess the mentality of many blue cards. Even their precon deck has been named “Izzet Gizmometry”  Gizmo- meaning a trinket or item of unknown usage, usually technologically advanced and -metry meaning the study of.

I’m looking forward to seeing the Izzet as a type of scientist-mage guild. Maybe with plenty of artifacts (GIZMOmetry). The Izzet are contradictory by nature though and the red side still puzzles me. Inventors are blue but red is more associated with destruction. They’re the kind of scientists that can’t concentrate on one thing, building something for months before spectacularly blowing it up when a better idea comes along.

Also the Izzet have quite a few references on flavor texts such as Seismic Spike (Their red side.) or Flow of Ideas (Blue mentality). Plus the Izzet are the proud owners of the ugliest Guildmage in existence (Fishlips as I call him). Perhaps the biggest bond that the Izzet are yet known to share with red is their Guild Leader, Niv-Mizzet.

Niv-Mizzet- Niv is the Guild Leader of the Izzet guild he’s short tempered (red) but brilliant (blue). And oh yeah, he’s a dragon. A dragon running a guild! But this is no ordinary dragon. Do you think the a Shivy could run a operation of one of the ten Guilds that run the plane-wide city of Ravnica? I think not. This dragon is also a wizard. So here we have big, flying probably, wizard, and probably “Tap one red mana gets +1/+0 until end of turn" (Representing the fire breathing that most dragons possess). Niv looks like a mighty awesome card already.. [even though we don't know what the card is yet ~Streetz~]

The Orzhov- Black/White

More contradictory Guilds. The Orzhov are an evil group of dudes. Much to do with the fact that black has such a horrific mix of demons and zombies and white is so pristine that mixing them seems almost blasphemous. When it comes down to it the Orzhov are the gray Guild. All information pertaining to what they really do behind closed doors is shadowy and hard to compile. I hope to see plenty or grays in the Orzhov art.

They are apparently a group of shadowy figures who manipulate trade in Ravnica and take their share of the city’s money whether the citizens know it or not. All of this is done behind the curtain or false piety and religion. Jeez, and I thought the Dimir were sneaky…

When I first heard of this Guild I wondered if it would go fallen angel or repentant vampire path. Looks like Fallen Angel it is… The thing that make the Orzhov so great is that the neighborhood priest is also the neighborhood pickpocket and nobody knows it and lives. An operation like this needs a wise and eerie leader or to be more precise leaders.

The Ghost Council- Now the ghost council are the spirits of the Orzhovs’ long dead patrons. Even in death they run the show when it comes to “business”. They sound creepy and they should if they run such a creepy Guild. I don’t know if they’ll make the Guild Leader the council or just a distinguished member of it.

The Gruul- Red/Green

Ah yes, red/green. I wonder if they’re aware that wood burns better than most other things. Anyway the Gruul Clans look to be an excellent Guild. The concept of using green mana acceleration to cast a 14 damage blaze has always fascinated me. The Gruul were once a loose band of warclans but ever since the other Guilds have moved it they have been stepped all over because of their lack of leadership and political skills. As you can guess neither a Baloth nor a Goblin has any particular speaking skill so it makes sense that if you combined them it could only be worse.

As you can guess the Gruul are quite angry with their lot in life and in true red style seek revenge. Their goal is to destroy Ravnican society be it by beasts or fire. Especially the other Guilds who caused their downfall.

Borborgymos (Tee Hee)- Borborgymos (Try saying that five times fast) is the leader of the Gruul Clans. He combines the size and power of green beasts with the red fascination of watching things blow up. And blow things up he will, we’re looking at a big creature with trample and some fancy ability for sure. I mean this guy makes Szadek or Savra look like midgets.

Hopefully they’ll grant my inner wish and put Elemental Goblins into the Gruul Clans. Can’t you just see a goblin made out of vines hitting saprolings in the head with rocks? No? Ah well…

Well I’d say that concludes my little look at the future of Magic the Gathering. I’d like to do this again for Dissention and I hope to see you all soon.

-Ninja Sloth

P.S. Keep your fingers crossed for those Elemental Goblins.

P.P.S. I’m not responsible for any stitches to your tongue after trying to say Borborgymos five times fast.
