Clan Contest - Bloodcurdler. -

Did you know Magic Deck Vortex has a forum? (I hope so)
More importantly, did you know the MDV forums have clans? (Maybe) What’s even
more, super important than that is… did you know the MDV forum clans have
contests?
… (no?)
…
Well, they do! And this time around the clan contest was to
build a deck centered on… of all cards (thanks, Yusuke)… Bloodcurdler!!!

Yeah, talk about a ‘challenging contest’. Who used this
card even when it was in standard? Nobody. Maybe a few rogue mono-black suicide
mages, but even then the card got nowhere. I can think of about 50 other black
cards that are WAY better than Bloodcurdler, but I digress.
Maybe not: Chimney Imp, Abyssal Gatekeeper, Agent of
Shauku, Blighted Shaman, Chimney Imp, Blind Creeper, Bog Imp, Bog Initiate,
Boneshard Slasher, Chimney Imp, Cyclopean Mummy, Divining Witch, Fledgling Imp,
Ghost Hounds, Giant Slug, Misshapen Fiend, Chimney Imp, Nim Shrieker, Plague
Fiend, Priest of Yawgmoth, Rats of Rath, Roofstalker Wight, Chimney Imp,
Screeching Buzzard, Skulking Ghost, Soldevi Adnate, Spiteful Bully, Squirming
Mass, Swamp Mosquito, Tethered Skirge, Chimney Imp, Volcano Imp, Walking Dead,
Wall of Tombstones, Whipstitched Zombie, Wretched Anurid and Chimney Imp. All of
these cards, especially the chimney imp, are more useful than the Bloodcurdler…
Before I get into the contest, let me talk about the clans
first.
What are clans?
Clans are groups of members with similar interests who discuss amongst each
other in clan threads. Each clan has a ‘motto’ and a symbol and then a list of
clan ‘items’ like clan music, clan food, clan smilie and so on. The clan motto
is what drives the clan and is also what keeps the clan together.
Clans can talk about anything, but the most fun in clans
comes from clan contests. Well, maybe clan kinship is ‘funner’ (more fun), but
anyway. During a clan contest, each clan competes to win the contest – whether
is be deck building, riddle making, logo making, or whatever. They discuss it in
their clan thread and then submit their entry. After that, all clans vote on the
best submission and clan points are assigned. Clan points are tallied with each
contest and each clan gets to compete on being the clan with the most points.
Unfortunately, and fortunately, there are rules. Rules of
the Clans:
- You may only be in one clan.
- If you want to start your own clan, post in the ‘Clans
of MDV (rules)’ thread first or your clan thread will be deleted. Once you
are recognized, feel free to create you clan. When you post here, just post
the name of your clan and maybe a little about it.
- If your new clan doesn’t have at least 4 people in it after
a month of starting the clan, your clan thread will be closed down. However,
if this happens, don’t worry. There are many other clans that would be happy
to have you in them. Note: After there are 10 successful clans, the time frame
will be two weeks instead of a month.
- The ‘Clan
Senate’ thread exists for all clan leaders to post and discuss ideas for
the contests or talk about other clan topics. You can only post in the ‘Clan
Senate’ if you are the leader of a clan and only if your clan has at least 4
members in it.
- The 'Clan
Roll Call' thread is a place that keeps track of each clan and the members
in it. All clan leaders must keep their clan up to date in this thread.
- If you are a member of a clan and are posting in another
clan’s thread, please be cautious in doing so. Post in other clan thread(s)
only if it’s something construction and non-intrusive. Trolling in another
clan’s thread can have detrimental consequences.
- Flaming won’t be tolerated, whether inter-clan or
intra-clan.
- Do not send emails to other members of the forum asking
them to be in your clan.
OK, with that over, I would hope that you want to join an
MDV clan (assuming you aren’t in one already.) It helps up your post count,
creates a sense of forum kinship amongst members of the forum, and is fun.

Your members here! |
As you can see, a few cleans need some more members.
Or, we could always use more clans. You can ask to join any clan by
posting in the thread. Some clans with lots of members (like the DeckMechs)
may have an 'initiation' process.
On a side note: Clan Contest #2 was to create a logo for
your clan. Neither clan (Wizards or DeckMechs) won the contest. It
is usually cool to include your clan logo in your avatar, sig and/or sig banner.
If you've ever visited the forum you will notice this being done.
Back to Bloodcurdler.
So as I was saying, even Chimney Imp is better than Bloodcurdler…
Each clan created a deck around this guy and currently the
clans are voting on each deck. Of the clans listed above, all but the [Thunder
Cats] submitted something for the contest. The guidelines for the contest
were simple - make a T1 legal deck focused on Bloodcurdler. Below are the
guidelines as posted by Yusuke (who started this clan contest) -- quoted:
O ya, the RESTRICTIONS!
Type: T1 (by request from the public)
Color: The deck must not be mono-black. Where's the fun in that? Get Creative
Here People!
The deck MUST be based centrally on Bloodcurdler. No on the side "oh and this
is why the curdler is in here"
There must be a title and description. This seems to be no brainer, but some
people forget
the deck must be 60 cards; no more, no less. You may have a sideboard of 15
cards.
Submissions must be handed in by Monday, Nov 14th!
Each clan had three weeks to come up with a deck and submit
it. Some clans chose to do the deck creation privately while others
discussed it right in their clan thread. One of the draw backs, during
contest, of posting everything in the clan thread is that other clan members can
see what you are up to and possibly steal your idea. However, no one deck
was nearly the same.
Below are the decks submitted by each clan. Note:
Some of these decks are VERY cool.

Clan Contest Entry -
Bloodcurdler Deck |
Lands
6 Forest
6 Swamp
4 Bayou
2 Llanowar Wastes
1 Bazaar of Baghdad
Creatures
4 Bloodcurdler
4 Carrion Feeder
4 Eternal Witness
4 Golgari Thug
4 Caller of the Claw
4 Centaur Safeguard

3 Bloodbond March
3 Pernicious Deed

1 Vampiric Tutor
Sideboard
4 Naturalize
4 Putrefy
3 Bone Shredder
2 Tormod's Crypt
2 Cranial Extraction |
In the beginning of the game, the focus is to get a ton of
cards in the graveyard (mostly creatures). Bloodcurdler helps a ton with
this, as does Golgari Thug if it ends up in the graveyard. If Bloodcurdler
starts removing cards in the graveyard from the game you don't want it to,
just sacrifice it and worry about it later, when it'll be more useful as a
2/2 flier.
Anything that's needed can be fetched from the graveyard via Eternal
Witness, and creatures can be fetched with Golgari Thug or Phyrexian
Reclamation. There's also Skullclamp and Fecundity to help find needed
cards.
Bloodbond March is a big part of this deck, emphasized by creatures with
comes-into-play or leaves-play abilities (Eternal Witness, Caller of the
Claw, Centaur Safeguard). Once a lot of these creatures are in the grave,
play one and return them all, sacrifice them (with Carrion Feeder or
Skullclamp), play another, return them all, rinse and repeat. Caller of
the Claw could be a possible win condition here, as could Carrion Feeder.
In dire situations, Pernicious Deed can blow up the board and make
everyone start over, except you already have a head start: everything you
need is in the graveyard waiting to be fished out. The Thug can return
itself to return the Witness to return anything you want. Have Bloodbond
March in play with this and return tons of cards a turn Very Happy .
As for the sideboard, Cranial Extraction helps against combo decks,
Naturalize, Bone Shredder (great with Bloodbond March!) and Putrefy are
there for extra kill if it's needed (especially for expensive cards the
Deed can't get rid of easily or a ton of weenies), and Tormod's Crypt
ruins decks based out of the graveyard. |

The bloodcurdler throws cards into your graveyard. Most of
the cards in the deck are either flashback cards or incarnations.. and
thus they can only do you good in your graveyard. To compliment the
incarnations, I have dual lands that are more than one basic land type to
make sure you get the full effect of your incarnations. To keep your
Bloodcurdler from getting threshold? Genesis and Flashback cards...
There is sol ring for mana acceleration. Vampiric Tutor for a needed tutor
in tough situations, and one Blanket of Night to combo with Filth (in your
graveyard) and all of your other creatures.
Undead Gladiator is there as one of your main win conditions, being able
to recur from your graveyard and get the full effect of your Incarnations.
Plus, he works incredibly well with the Bloodcurlder.
There are many different routes you could take with this deck.. but most
of all - it is FUN to play. While it uses some cards from T1... it's
emphasis is on the fun aspect of the Bloodcurlder ability(ies). |

The deck below tried to abuse the filterability of the
bloodcurdler to filter cards in and out of the graveyard in order to stack
the graveyard in a proper way to gain advantage.
Better (read "known unoriginal") cards like zombie infestation, psychatog,
stormbind and even seismic assault are deliberately avoided. Those cards
win almost by themselves, will overshadow the bloodcurdler and have little
synergy with the bloodcurdler itself. |

This deck is based around milling, but not your opponent.
Curdler comes down early to start the milling party, and later in the game
Mesmeric orb hits the table, but only when you've got enough permanents for
it to be effective. Once the graveyard is nice and full, you can drop a
'tog. If the tog gets milled with the Curdler or Orb, Recurring nightmare
lets you trade it with the Curdler.
The sideboard, other than Chains of Mephistopheles, is a toolbox. Chains
of Mephistopheles is in there to combat decks that use cards like Fact or
Fiction and other big card drawing spells. Cunning Wish shows up to search
for cards like Time Twister in case the deck mills itself too much,
Another Reanimate and Exhume for consistency, a Coffin Purge as sideboard
tech against other recursion decks, Misdirection in case we have problems
with people trying to target us with really big Fireballs and whatnot, and
Hurkyll's Recall for Affinity.
If you need the enchantments or artifacts in the deck, you Cunning Wish
for Golden Wish, and then are able to access Feldon's Cane if milling
becomes a problem, Powder Keg to blow up a heavy board, Propaganda to
stop attacks and Standstill for card advantage against beats, and even
Crucible of Worlds to play the lands you dropped into the grave with
Bloodcurdler and Mesmeric Orb. |

Wow!
Those are some perty different decks for all having one
focus: the Bloodcurdler. Now remember, the main point of this contest was
to create a deck that needed Bloodcurdler to win. Some of these decks
accomplish this better than others, but here is where the fun starts. I
would like you all to review the decks (quickly) and then post which one you
like the most based on the criteria for the contest in the following poll!
Note: Your votes do not determine the winner, but it gives
us guys in the clans an idea of where we are at with our decks.. and it's fun!
The votes will be cast by each clan in the clan forum. Don't you want to
be a part of it?
Please enjoy the decks, the forums and the clans and thanks
for visiting Magic Deck Vortex!
