June 09 DCI Banned & Restricted List

Today's B&R announcement had a few changes for Vintage:

Quote:
Announcement Date: June 19, 2009
Effective Date: July 1, 2009

Vintage
Thirst for Knowledge is restricted

Crop Rotation is no longer restricted
Enlightened Tutor is no longer restricted
Entomb is no longer restricted
Grim Monolith is no longer restricted
I can't help but feel that pulling Entomb off the restricted list could be a mistake. Minimally, Reanimator Hulk gets a big boost from this, and it seems like there are plenty of other potential abuses for Entomb.

I'm fine with the other changes, although Crop Rotation into Tolarian Academy is probably going to happen a lot.

Opinions? Does MDV care either way?

Re: June 09 DCI Banned & Restricted List

None of them seems like an immediate problem, and restricting Thirst for Knowledge weakens a dominant deck. Many cards really deserve unrestriction, and regardless of how these pan out (though Grim Monolith is very safe), I'm happy to see Wizards taking a step in this direction, as opposed to the sweeping restrictions they made last year.

Re: June 09 DCI Banned & Restricted List

Yeah, of these I'd say Entomb is the only worry. It probably won't cause any huge problems though.

Crop Rotation is definitely fair since the land sacrifice is part of the cost. There's that tiny window of tension when playing this card - we'll see if it gets played at all.

They are really restricting a lot of blue, first brainstorm/ponder, then thirst for knowledge.

Brainstorm and Ponder are restricted? Wow, I didn't know that...

Nonetheless, I may be inclined to build an Academy deck. I've always wanted one...

I don't know the first thing about Vintage, but is Thirst for Knowledge really all that overpowered?

It's an instant draw three for cheap. There's two others like that and they're both restricted.

Yes

Its basically a draw 3 then pitch the Darksteel Collosus that was in your hand so you can shuffle it to go tinker for it. It also let Control Slaver always 3 for 1 with it. The card was infinitely better in Vintage than it is in any other format (and its really good in extended), because EVERYONE plays artifacts in vintage.

Crop rotation into Academy doesn't sound that good. Although with Lorescale Coatl I guess the U/G archetype could get good again.
Entomb means dragon combo is playable again, but in the current metagame it doesn't sound horribly relevant unless you go off on turn 1 every game. Monolith is fine. No one is going to run it away. There are better things that you can do with your Voltaic Key

This is interesting to say the least. But Your Worst Nightmare, you may want to re-think that, you might end up with a hoof where you don't want it.

I am just glad Entomb is unrestricted, I had a deck a while back that would of really loved that card in fours, time for the abuse to start.

Oh yeah, and Demigod Decks just got a major boost.

Unrestricting Enlightened Tutor will be good for Oath decks. Now you can consistently get your Oath out much quicker. Hooray for Progenitus

Not really. It only gets one and you have to have another one. Intuition gets you 3 for just 2 more mana.

I thought that was Buried Alive's job, although I can see where that card gives you the advantage, I was merely speaking about how the deck type would have more ways to dump Demigod into the graveyard, then come out through speedy recursion via something like Reanimate.

*humorously distorts own face*

I can see Crop Rotation being used with Academy, however I'm more worried about it being used to fetch Bazaar or Library.
