    Legacy GW Maverick

I am leaving for GP Indianapolis this afternoon and thought I would post the deck that I intend on running at the event. It is a pretty standard GW Maverick deck. Like most of my decks, when forced with the decision, I choose consistency over one-ofs and variety. I chose the deck because I like durdly green dudes, I don't think this is the type of deck that is going to give me a headache by the end of the day, most of my rounds should end in a reasonable amount of time, and the deck is consistent with a reasonable manabase (manabase being the reason I chose not to run punishing fire or bant).
    4 Noble Hierarch
    4 Mother of Runes
    2 Scavenging Ooze
    3 Qasali Pridemage
    3 Stoneforge Mystic
    1 Gaddock Teeg
    4 Knight of the Reliquary
    1 Thrun, the Last Troll
    1 Dryad Arbor
1 Sword of Fire and Ice
    1 Umezawa's Jitte
    1 Batterskull
    2 Sylvan Library
    1 Elspeth, Knight-Errant
    4 Swords to Plowshares
    4 Green Sun's Zenith
    4 Savannah
    4 Windswept Heath
    2 Misty Rainforest
    1 Flooded Strand
    1 Gaea's Cradle
    1 Karakas
    1 Horizon Canopy
    4 Wasteland
    2 Forest
    2 Plains
    1 Maze of Ith

    Sideboard
    3 Purify the Grave
    1 Tormod's Crypt
    3 Leyline of Sanctity
    1 Ethersworn Canonist
    2 Path to Exile
    2 Choke
    1 Linvala, Keeper of Silence
    1 Qasali Pridemage
    1 Gaddock Teeg

The only changes I have been considering in the main are possibly the addition of one Scryb Ranger at the cost of a pridemage most likely and also changing one Hierarch to a Birds of Paradise to occasionally hold a sword or batterskull in a stalemate. I also haven't been overly excited about Sword of Fire and Ice. Maybe it should be a different Sword. My sideboard, however, is completely in question. I like the split that I have with graveyard hate. I'm not sure how many Leylines and Canonists I should run. It is possible that I should just play 4 Leylines and no Canonists. I'm not sure. Linvala is for the mirror. I haven't tested her as much as I would like, but she seems quite good. Other cards I have considered for the sideboard are Sword of Feast and Famine for the mirror primarily (Junk, Bant, GW, and Punishing Maverick) as well as BUG control. Another card that seems really good is Phyrexian Metamorph, although he is admittedly better in an Enlightened Tutor package sideboard. Any comments or suggestions are appreciated.

    Re: Legacy GW Maverick

I like the one bird vs. one hierarch plan, especially since you don't need to win goyf wars. A few things I'm iffy on,

2 sylvan library seems like a lot, I'm not sure how much I like the multiples. drawing both is so backbreakingly bad, it's unbelievable- I'd rather limit my chances to draw it than risk throwing the game because I have two. Yes, I really do find playing two to be dangerous, especially with something like a GP where you need to be as low variance as possible.

Leylines are bad, don't run those- as for canonists, I'd rather see you run [c]Thalia, guardian of the Thraben[/c]. Metamorph is bad, since you rarely want multiple of one sword.

Scyb ranger is played, I like it a lot, but at the same time removing a pridemage or a thrun (another card I'm on the fence about, but which seems fine in many situations) would probably push me in the direction of a second elspeth, a card I feel is almost mandatory as a two of. In fact, I'd drop a library for an elspeth, and a pridemage for a thalia, or better yet, a maindeck gaddock teeg. That, however, is iffy- it gives you game against combo game 1, along with many other more control-type decks, but once you play him you're boned if you want to green sun again. It's a relatively safe way to play, but you lose a slot that could be important in other situations.

As for your sideboard, you're right, it looks sketchy. To start with, why do you need 4 pridemage? You have 3 maindeck and 4 zeniths- you'd assume that'd be enough, especially in a legacy deck where lists need to be tight.

I like the land package sideboard myself, since knight of the reliquary makes it reasonable to search up a combination of things like
    1 [c]tower of the magistrate[/c]
    or
    1 [c]bojuka bog[/c]

A friend of mine also runs an enlightened tutor package out of the board, you mentioned liking that so you could run something like this:

    x [c]thorn of amethyst[/c]
    x [c]choke[/c]
    x [c]wheel of sun and moon[/c]
    x [c]serenity[/c]
    x [c]circle of protection: red[/c]

stuff like that. In any case, you seem to really dislike dredge, which is fine, but running non-bojuka bog or tormod's crypt dredge hate in this deck is a practice I dislike, especially when you run leyline of sanctity for Burn. Try [c]Aegis of honor[/c] instead- I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. It's also a more feasible hardcast in the opening hand.

I offer a specific viewpoint - the competitive one. I'm not out to get you, your deck, or to crush creativity.
