Like I've mentioned on previous circumstances, I'm really liking the new turn Magic has made regarding underused creature types. In other words, creature types that haven't been seen in years are seeing the light of day again! Of course, it's still impossible to make an Octopus tribal deck, for example, but it's a step in the right direction and Wizards deserves a commendation for that.
But exactly how much is still left for such creature types to have the least bit of sporting chance against creature types that never ever seen to go away like Elves or Goblins? Exactly how unbalanced is the tribal scene, a thematic Wizards never seems to want to let go? How many other creature types are still sitting in the shadows, waiting for their turn to shine?
After some investigation, I've compiled this short list. As of Worldwake, the distribution of creature types in Magic (considering solely actual creature cards, not counting token-producers or tribal cards) is as follows:
Creature types that appear on 1-5 existing creatures:
Anteater, Archon, Assembly-Worker, Aurochs, Badger, Beeble, Bringer, Brushwagg, Camel, Carrier, Chimera, Cockatrice, Devil, Dreadnought, Egg, Elder, Elk, Eye, Ferret, Flagbearer, Gorgon, Harpy, Hippo, Homunculus, Hyena, Jellyfish, Kirin, Lammasu, Manticore, Masticore, Monger, Mongoose, Nautilus, Nephilim, Noggle, Octopus, Orgg, Oyster, Phelddagrif, Rabbit, Rigger, Salamander, Satyr, Scorpion, Sheep, Siren, Slug, Sponge, Squid, Squirrel, Starfish, Surrakar, Volver, Weird, Whale, Wombat, Wraith
Creature types that appear on 6-10 existing creatures:
Antelope, Basilisk, Bat, Crab, Crocodile, Cyclops, Dauthi, Drone, Gnome, Goat, Hag, Hellion, Homarid, Kobold, Kraken, Leech, Lhurgoyf, Metathran, Mystic, Ninja, Ox, Pegasus, Phoenix, Slith, Soltari, Thalakos, Thopter, Turtle, Unicorn, Wolverine, Worm, Yeti, Zubera
Creature types that appear on 11-20 existing creatures:

Creature types that appear on 21-50 existing creatures:
Advisor, Ally, Ape, Archer, Artificer, Assassin, Avatar, Barbarian, Berserker, Centaur, Construct, Demon, Djinn, Dryad, Dwarf, Elephant, Fungus, Griffin, Hound, Imp, Kavu, Kor, Lizard, Mercenary, Minion, Minotaur, Monk, Mutant, Nomad, Plant, Rat, Rebel, Samurai, Scarecrow, Serpent, Skeleton, Spider, Troll, Vampire, Vedalken, Viashino
Creature types that appear on 51-100 existing creatures:
Angel, Cat, Dragon, Drake, Faerie, Giant, Golem, Illusion, Insect, Kithkin, Ogre, Scout, Shapeshifter, Sliver, Snake, Spellshaper, Treefolk, Wall, Wurm
Creature types that appear on 101-200 existing creatures:
Bird, Druid, Horror, Knight, Merfolk, Rogue
Creature types that appear on 201-500 existing creatures:
Beast, Cleric, Elemental, Elf, Goblin, Shaman, Soldier, Spirit, Warrior, Wizard, Zombie
Creature types that appear on more than 501 existing creatures:
Human
Creature types that don't appear on any actual creature:
Blinkmoth, Camarid, Caribou, Citizen, Coward, Deserter, Graveborn, Orb, Pentavite, Pest, Pincher, Prism, Reflection, Sand, Saproling, Serf, Spawn, Splinter, Survivor, Tetravite, Triskelavite
How awkward is it that the creature type Ally, which just began existing this very block, is already featured on as many creatures as Demons, Dryads and Minotaurs, which have been around literally since the beginning of Magic? And why were the creature types Anteater, Dreadnought and Nautilus created during the Grand Creature Type Update if they're not given any support whatsoever? This new page in Magic's chapter is a quite exciting one indeed, but there's still much to be done.
