View Full Version : 5CB #13 (Sort of a special round)

The title says "Sort of a special round", and that's what this is. Here's the plan. Black Lotus, a card that is arguably more relevant in XCB than any other when its legal has shifted somewhat irregularly between banned and legal. Now that shift will be regular. For regular rounds, Black Lotus will be legal for two weeks at a time, after which will follow two rounds where it's banned. The cycle then repeats. Basically, I don't feel like banning or unbanning Black Lotus is special enough to make for a "special round", but I would like to see rounds with and without it. I'll try to be clear, though, what kind of week we're in.

So, in case you didn't read that last paragraph, just know that Black Lotus is legal this week.

Additions to the banned list from last week are Anvil of Bogardan, Mishra's Workshop, Nether Spirit, Nevinyrral's Disk and Sheltered Valley.

PM me your decks by Saturday, March 10th at 9:00 pm PST.

The cards in my decklist will begin with the letters B, B, B, G and P.

Sorry for the delay in starting this round; I'm just really bad at making decks for lotus rounds.

Rules
These are the rules for Vanishing 5 Card Blind:
Your deck is composed of 5 cards which all start in your hand.
Your library contains 0 cards and you don’t have a sideboard.
Random effects always go in your opponent's favor.
You can see your opponent's hand.
You don't lose as a result of not being able to draw a card.
You play each opponent twice; once going first and once going second.
For each win, you score 3 points.
For each draw, you score 1 point.
For each loss, you score 0 points.

Further, you may not submit a deck that can:
1. Win before the opponent's first main phase.
2. Force an opponent to lose more than one card from his hand per turn.
3. Generate infinite (an arbitrarily large amount of) mana on the first turn of the game.

Other than the aforementioned, everything is handled exactly like a real game of Magic.

To play, simply send me a PM with your list of five cards.

After each round, cards in the winning deck and any card in at least 1/3 of the decks played that round will be banned in future rounds.

Congrats to DBB for his first 5CB win! There's a very nice mix of overwhelming creature power and two utility spells in that deck.

Also, a note on Halinn's deck. It really says something about the power of Thallid-Daze when he did so well with 2 of his cards being unplayable in many matchups.

Oh, and SenorClown actually figured out all the cards in my deck and specifically metagamed against it. :)

The next round will go up later today or tomorrow.

Me (Plains, Factory, Tabernacle, Seal, Needle) vs. Pingele_Pats (Lotus, Swamp, Shrouded Lore, Earthcraft, Squirrel Nest)
Currently: 3-3
Should be: 6-0

Tabernacle is what ruins him (I actually put it there expecting Hunting Pack). Even if he makes infinite tokens, during his upkeep, he can only keep one. Then I Pith or Seal Squirrel Nest, and at that point Mishra's Factory can definitely beat a Squirrel token.

vs. Halinn (Trop, Daze, Thallid, Disrupting Shoal, Evermind)
Currently: 0-6
Should be: 6-0
I can get Pithing Needle down on his Thallid by waiting to play it until turn 2, when I have Plains and Mishra's Factory out. Then, Factory races better than Thallid.

#1 Mogg (Lotus, Lotus, Moon, Glow, Preacher) vs. Pingele_Pats (Lotus, Swamp, Shrouded Lore, Earthcraft, Squirrel Nest)
Currently: 0-6
Should be: 3-3

When Mogg is on the play, he can drop Glowrider, thus making it impossible for Pingele to combo out, since Craft + Squirrel Nest cost a total of 4GGG, which he falls short of.

#2 Halinn (Trop, Daze, Thallid, Disrupting Shoal, Evermind) vs. #3 Niv-Mizzet_Rulez! (Chalice, Core, Vial, SSS, Souls)
Current: 6-0
Should be: 3-3

This one's a long one. With NMR! on the play:

N: Core, Vial.
H: Trop, Thallid.
N: 1 counter.
H: 1 counter, 19-20.
N: 2 counters.
H: 2 counters, 18-20.
N: 3 counters.
H: 3 counters, make a sap, 17-20.
N: 4 counters.
H: 1 counter, 15-20.
N: 5 counters.
H: 2 counters, 13-20.
N: 6 counters.
H: 3 counters, make a sap, 11-20.
N: 7 counters, drop SSS.
H: 1 counter.
N: Swing with SSS. 11-14.
H: 2 counters. 8-14
N: 8-8.
H: 3 counters, make a sap, 5-8.
N: 5-2.
H: 2-2.
N: Win.

Note that that is only when NMR is on the play. On the draw, he loses by that same thin margin.

This makes it:

X| 1 2 3 4| 5 6 Total
1| X 3 3 0| 3 3 12
2| 3 X 3 0| 0 3 9
3| 3 3 X 0| 0 3 9
4| 6 6 6 X| 1 6 25
5| 3 6 6 4| X 3 22
6| 3 3 3 0| 3 X 9

Sorry, guys!

Alright, I agree with some, but not all of your corrections.

SenorClown vs. Pingele_Pats
Still 3-3.
Let's say he makes 100 tokens, ok? You play tabernacle. On his turn he taps 50 saprolings and taps then untaps his Swamp 50 times for mana, letting him pay the upkeep for the remaining 50 saprolings.

SenorClown vs. Halinn
I somehow forgot that making the tokens was an activated ability. 6-0 for SenorClown.

Mogg vs. Pingele_Pats
Still 0-6, explanation in the spoiler
M: Glowrider, Preacher
P: Swamp, Black Lotus
M: attack
P: 17, sacrfice lotus and tap Swamp, play Squirrel Nest
M: attack
P: 14
M: attack with Glowrider (P_P makes a token to block, but I take it with Preacher)
P: 12, token
M: I can't attack with Glowrider now because then P_P could kill it and get his combo going. Attack with saproling.
P: 11, 2 tokens
M: attack
P: 10, 3 tokens
M: attack
P: 9, 4 tokens
M: attack
P: 8, 5 tokens
M: attack
P: 7, 6 tokens
M: attack
P: 6, 7 tokens
M: attack
P: 5, 8 tokens
M: attack
P: 4, attack for 8
M: 12, attack
P: 3, attack for 9
M: 3, attack
P: 2, attack for 10
M: dead

Halinn vs. NMR!
Agree, not sure what I was thinking here.

X| 1 2 3 4| 5 6 Total
1| X 3 3 0| 3 0 9
2| 3 X 3 0| 0 3 9
3| 3 3 X 0| 0 3 9
4| 6 6 6 X| 1 3 22
5| 3 6 6 4| X 3 22
6| 6 3 3 3| 3 X 18

DBB and SenorClown both win!

You forget i drop souls to block when viel has 3 counters on it.

Also wouldn't needle be able to stop the creatrue arrmy if he names swamp or earthcraft?

Mogg

It doesn't matter if you drop wall or not, you win that game regardless, and you still lose to Daze going second. In regards to P_P's deck, he will get an arbitrarily large amount of squirrels on his turn (before SenorClown can play Pithing Needle). To get an arbitrarily large amount of creatures on his first turn, P_P plays Black Lotus and sacrifices it for BBB. He uses B to play Shrouded Lore and get back Black Lotus. He plays Black Lotus and sacrifices it for GGG. He uses GGB to play Squirrel Nest on his Swamp. He uses GB to play Earthcraft. Now he can make as many squirrels as he wants. Not sure if I had to explain that, but I didn't understand that he got his combo going on turn 1 the first time I saw it, so I thought maybe that was part of the confusion.

On a sidenote, Round 14 will go up today after I get back from piano (maybe early tomorrow morning for those of you east of California).
