View Full Version : How do newbies get such good cards?

There are a couple of newbies in my neighborhood who recently got some magic cards. I looked through their "decks" and I kept saying to myself "WHO gave them THOSE?!" One had a dark ritual in the midst of cruddy cards, another had gotten three counterspells, another had a r/w painland, and I'm thinking, "How come the n00bs can get the good cards?" It took me a while to find someone who would trade coutnerspells and dark rituals and painlands, and here they are, n00bs getting them for free. How does this happen?

My hobby store sells singles. I got a playset of Beta dark rits for around $10-15. Counterspells comes in the 6th edition starter set. The painland is another story, although he may have bought it as a single.

No, I mean these kids are about 5th graders. They couldn't really comprehend how good the painland was; i doubt they bought it as a single.

Did they buy starter sets, or were they given cards? The painlands and rits and etc. could have been given to them in some sort of random assortment.

They were just given to them. They didn't buy them themselves. Maybe whomever had them first had some sense...but still. I just don't like how newbies can get these cards more easily than I can... :( maybe I'm just ranting.

Its all in who you know. I got a couple of Invasion dragons from a guy who was quiting Magic. I bought the lot for like $5.

one of 'em had a dromar... :cry:

maybe my friend was selling to them too. I didn't get a Dromar. gotta love Crosis, though.
I'm not so surprised by the ritual and counterspell stuff. They are both commons afterall. The painland does surprise me, though.

still, counterspell goes for 2 bucks; high as commons outside of Rancor go.

Counterspell for $2 is a ripoff...
Yeah, they kind of inherit them usually.

*sigh* o well. As a responsible adult I only traded for one counterspell. :D They'll figure it out sometime.

I wouldn't doubt that... anyone playing during the earlier days of the game would have piles of counterspells and dark Rituals in thier stacks of cards.
The R/W painland however is kind of odd... someone would have had to have been playing as recently as IPA to have one of those, and then pass on thier cards.
Of course, on my runs of scouring dollar boxes, I'll turn up painlands from time to time, so they could have gotten them there as well...
that actually makes a decent amount of sense, as I've seen counterspells and Dark Rits begin to creep into the dollar boxes.

well, you never know...But as 5th graders, I doubt thats where they get them.

Haha I have all the Invasion dragons :devil: just wanted to say that. Can't find all the Legends ones though hm...
Beginner's luck? Maybe in a few years they'll realize how good it is lol.

Maybe...I just hope that they keep them like i told them too. Counterspell and Dark Rit. will not be reprinted anytime soon.

I am known to give people who just start playing (and should a sincere interest in the game) about 400 cards... commons and extra uncommons and in some cases.. extra rares.
I wish I knew someone like me when I was getting started. :)

I freakin' hate them, too. I own Sol Rings, and Serra Avatars, but nothing like a Chrome Mox or Birds, and it's so annoying to see decks powering things out far faster than they have any right to.

Well, it's not that hard to get those cards. When I started, I bought a precon, and some guy looked through it, kicked some bad cards out and added some cards, including dark rituals, wild growths and stuff. And he might as well got the cards from a good player he knows, or pulled the painland from a booster.
I once had a foil ravager before bans... And I'm quite proud of my bayou too.

My friend has a couple of Chrome Moxes... He's always moving them between his like 3 decks.
But he has BLACK LOTUS. But he has it locked up in a safe. He's not looking for really rare cards, though. He wants some real Fire / Ice (he has 3 proxies and 1 real).

haha and you guys think you have it bad, a friend of mine (the bigest newb in the world) decided to start playing magic right so he went out and bought a big pile of cards off a quiting player and like 4 boosters, in the boosters he got 2 birds of paradice, a chrome mox, and a arcbound ravager, and in the bloody pile of cards from the quiter he got the legends dragons (all of em), a black lotus, and a lotus vale! and then (this is what makes me mad) he traded them away for some crappy commons (icaiatan scouts, a few giant growths, and some other cards i cant remember) cause he didnt believe me that they were good!!!!!! :furious: :violin: :furious:
that kindov thing realy pisses me off... but what i hate more is when youve been looking for a card for a long time and then one of ur friends buys like one booster and gets the card and then trades it to someone else cause they thought that person would use it better.... :furious:

Ultima, stop lying. You don't know anyone with a black lotus.[/b][/quote]
And what does he gain by lying to us?. You're making a strong assumption and questioning a person's integrity jut because you didn´t have the opportunity to actually meet someone that owns a Lotus.
I won´t tolerate personal attacks in the forum. You've been warned.

Fair enough. But why did you call Ultima a liar, knowing that the actual liar is his friend?

I think Ultima isn't naïve enough to believe what that guy says, being a very shady character. In that sense, he is lying to himself and you guys if he truly thinks that person is really telling the truth.
Some person quit magic when I was starting and handed me a WoG and BoP. However, I didn't truly understand the power behind the two cards. I traded WoG for Akroma's Vengeance and the BoP for Chrome Mox. I traded the chrome mox for a lite white weenie soldier deck to the that guy that says he has a black lotus.
hey, i'm a noob! now, someone give me powerful cards that i'm aware how powerful they are! :D

I've seen things like this happen before. This one noob was just starting out and his parents bought him all the stuff he wanted so he can play with whatever net deck he wanted to play (he wanted to play fish at the time). So they bought him the duals, fow, etc. and two months later he just quit. We asked him why, and he just said: "It's just a fad you'll grow out of it too...."
It was the WTF for my group.

Actually, the real reason that n00bs get such good cards is because of the following, TRUE, reasons as released by WotC:
1. Each booster pack is adhered by a thin layer of a new element nicknamed "Wizardium". This element, when touched, measures the toucher's n00b-level on the Wizarscale. Depending on what they score on the Wizarscale, the cards in the booster actually morph. Now, it a pure-at-heart player opens this pack, he will most likely get a One With Nothing, even if the set is not Saviors Of Kamigawa (This is a true story.) But, if a W1C|<E|) n00b opens this pack, he will get the rarest card in the set, foil, and somehow signed by the artist.
Wizarscale
1 = W1C|<E|) n00b
2 = PR3TTY |)/-R||3|) n00b
3 = |/|1||()R n00b
4 = No Newb
5 = Decent player
6 = Good player
7 = Great player!
8 = GReat player!!
9 = WHOO!!!
10 = U R Gawd
2. Wizards Of The Coast have actually enlisted the help of Professor Xavier from the X-Men. They use his psychic ability to switch the booster in your hand (containing a good card) with a pack at the bottom of the box (containing a One With Nothing [see above statement]). Unless that player is a n00b, look out for the Professor (aka: wheels)
3. You're unlucky.
