Welcome to the ninth round of Five Card Blind on MDV! (I finally decided to restart the counting from when 3CB turned into this)

Planar Chaos is legal for this round and future rounds, now that it’s available on Gatherer. The following cards are temporarily unbanned:
Black Lotus
Lion’s Eye Diamond
Lotus Bloom
City of Traitors
Mishra’s Factory
Mishra’s Workshop

Lotus Bloom will actually stay off the banned list unless it is banned in one of the two regular ways. I feel like the card never got a chance.

Also, with all this acceleration available, I’m taking a rule from Death_By_Beeble’s 4CB thread and pasting it here. From the rules spoiler:
“3. You may not submit a deck that can generate infinite (an arbitrarily large amount of) mana on the first turn.”

Decklists are due to me on Friday, February 2nd at 12:00 pm EST.
The cards in my deck start with the letters B, C, P, S, V.

Rules
These are the rules for Vanishing 5 Card Blind:
Your deck is composed of 5 cards which all start in your hand.
Your library contains 0 cards and you don’t have a sideboard.
Random effects always go in your opponent's favor.
You can see your opponent's hand.
You don't lose as a result of not being able to draw a card.
You play each opponent twice; once going first and once going second.
For each win, you score 3 points.
For each draw, you score 1 point.
For each loss, you score 0 points.

Three rules restrict the kind of deck you can send. They are:
1. You may not submit a deck that can win before the opponent's first main phase.
2. You may not submit a deck that can force an opponent to lose more than one card from his hand per turn.
3. You may not submit a deck that can generate infinite (an arbitrarily large amount of) mana on the first turn.

Other than the aforementioned, everything is handled exactly like a real game of Magic.

To play, simply send me your list of five cards with a heading similar to “Vanishing 5 Card Blind Tournament”.

The "Vanishing" part is the twist. After each round, the cards in the winning deck and any cards in at least 1/3 of the decks for that round will be banned for all future rounds. The moxes and certain cycles of land will not appear on the banned list except in certain special rounds.

One of the keys to this format seems to be having many ways to stop the other guys cards. Last round, foil was able to prevent Mox*, even when playing second. That kind of trick is what wins games. Decks that just try to do their own thing tend to find that thing is spoiled by a good defensive play, after which the other player wins. Maybe other strategies work too, but you must figure on others opposing you and how you can beat that.

One thing I found interesting about the moxless rounds: combo decks won. Foil lost a lot of its appeal by not being able to randomly hit moxes and win games that way. Two mana disruption was usually too slow. I think that was against my initial assumption that taking away the moxes would slow the format down.

Btw, Niv, I'm curious what you think the P is. It's not a card that's been used before for any of the XCB on this site.

The only reason I haven't implemented this rule in previous rounds is that it was unnessary. Someone may yet prove me wrong, but I think Black Lotus or some similar form of acceleration is needed to get a competetive deck that can reach arbitrarily large mana on turn one.

Since I've never run a Five Card Blind with Black Lotus before I decided to trust that there's a good reason for this rule.

Well, we've been without this game for a while and I want to get it going again.

Decklists are due tomorrow, 12:00 pm EST.

Once I have the results posted for that, I'll put up the next round: Time Spiral Block Constructed. You'll be able to use any card from Time Spiral or Planar Chaos, regardless of if they were previously banned. You will not be able to use any cards outside of those two sets. Additionally, The Rack is banned. Are we all in agreement that that card is just too powerful? So, if you already have a deck for this round, start thinking about that.

So, for the most part the scores were pretty similar. I'm really not sure how much there is to say for a six person round. It makes scoring easier? Combining recursive mass destruction that can come out turn one with an evasive creature that nukes one of the opponent's cards seem to have been a good combination.

The next round will be going up soon. In case anyone's reading this who didn't play, I'd encourage you to try the next round. It uses only cards from Planar Chaos and Time Spiral, so it may be a more accessible format to the new player.
