View Full Version : 5 Card Blind Round 19!!!

Mogg
01-09-2007, 05:39 PM
Welcome to another round of 5CB!

The moxes continue to be banned for this round. I want to get a better sense of what the format is like without them.

Rules, Winning Decks, Banned Cards and threads for all previous games are in the spoiler.

These are the rules for Vanishing 5 Card Blind:
Your deck is composed of 5 cards which all start in your hand.
Your library contains 0 cards and you don’t have a sideboard (Wishes fetch nothing).
Random effects always go in your opponent's favor.
You can see your opponent's hand, so you make the best possible play.
You don't lose as a result of not being able to draw a card.
You play each opponent twice; once going first and once going second.
For each win, you score 3 points.
For each draw, you score 1 point.
For each loss, you score 0 points.

Two rules restrict the kind of deck you can send. They are:
1.You may not submit a deck that can win before the opponent's first main phase.
2.You may not submit a deck that can force an opponent to lose more than one card from his hand per turn.

Other than the aforementioned, everything is handled exactly like a real game of Magic.

If you want to play, PM me a message with a heading similar to "Vanishing 5 Card Blind Tournament". The format for the message should be:
Card #1
Card #2
Card #3
Card #4
Card #5

The "Vanishing" part is the twist. After each round, the cards in the winning deck and any cards in at least 1/3 of the decks for that round will be banned for all future rounds.

Each month will have a winner based on the rounds that finished in that month. A person’s monthly score is expressed as a percent. This percent results from dividing the points a person received by the points that person could have received for the rounds that person participated in. I’m doing it this way so that someone who misses a round still has a chance to win.

Additions to the banned list after last round are Conjurer's Bauble, Crystal Vein, Illusionary Mask, Phyrexian Dreadnought and Rishadan Port.

Post in this thread if you're interested in playing. Decklists are due Monday, January 15th.

The cards in my deck for this round start with the letters R, R, S, S, S.

Good luck and be creative!

Question. If someone has to discard a card from their had at random what happens in this format?

SenorClown
01-11-2007, 06:59 PM
Random effects always go in your opponents favor. So, if you force an opponent to discard at random, you're essentially allowing them to pick and discard.

However, if you force yourself to discard, it's essentially allowing your opponent to pick. It's whatever is worst for the spell/ability's controller.

Wow, decklists are coming in quickly this time. It's nice with the decks to see a solid mixture of old and new decks, with one interesting trend developing.

The results are in! I've received a list from everyone except Pingele_Pats. He said in advance that he might not have time to come up with a list. I hope he's able to submit something next time.

Overall, one thing has become very clear in these moxless rounds. Play combo ftw! This round had only two control decks, played by Halinn and Death_By_Beebles. They did fine, but it seems that being able to mox out heavier disruption on turn one is a big deal. I decided to take advantage of this by using CJS's deck from a few rounds ago. It's capable of turn 2 wins and the Avatar doesn't ever really die, so it's semi-resistant to hate (but not very).

Eladamri's Vineyard was a very popular card this round. The combination of extra mana (a turn later) and a win condition is powerful indeed. I think it's only fair that Cashew had the best-placing vineyard deck since he's the one who seems to have popularized it in these last few rounds.

One final note; welcome Rayden_Marz! Debuting at third is pretty good and he's currently in third for monthly standings as well.

The next round will go up tomorrow once I've decided on a deck. Next round will be regular; moxes are unbanned. There will also be a poll to get your opinion on a couple things. Please don't send me lists until the next round goes up!

Me vs. Death_By_Beebles
Current: 3-3
Should be: 6-0

On the draw...

D: Trop, Vineyard.
S: Havenwood Battleground. Burn for 2.
D: Words of Wind.
S: Use Vineyard mana + sac Battleground to play Eureka, dumping Sky Swallower and Illusions, passing Illusions over.
D: Even if he uses Words of Wind, he can't pay the upkp cost for Illusions, and if he bounces it with Words, he still loses 20 life.

I don't see any way for him to win this one.

Mogg, doesn't your deck break the rule, no Turn 1 win? Mountain, Tap, Rite, Rite, Sneak in Serra. She has haste. Attack for 20. game over. What am I missing?

Mogg
01-16-2007, 05:49 PM
@SenorClown
You're absolutely right. I managed to just forget that you get GG from Vineyard each turn. My thought process was that he could bounce a land every turn to keep you off the necessary mana. I'll fix that now.

@Niv-Mizzet_Rulez!
Comments like "go back through each link and fix them please" really don't help. If I knew which links didn't work, I'd probably have done them correctly the first time. Tell me which links specifically don't work.

@guest1234
It would cost 5 mana to do all that turn one. I only have 4 mana on turn 1. Therefore, I can't win until turn 2.

guest1234
01-16-2007, 06:10 PM
My oversight. okay, here are my contended matchups:
Vs SC, 6pts
Senor: Havenwood.
Me: forest, vineyard
Senor: Sac for Eureka, play SkySwallower
Me: vineyard, vineyard
Senor: 6pt mana burn, 8pt attack. Me: 12, Senor 14
Me: Wurm X is 3, with buyback.
Senor: Attack. Me: 4, Senor: 8
Me: attack for 3, Wurm, X is 3. Me: 4, Senor; 5
Senor: Burn for 6, at -1, cant attack.

If he don’t attack, I win off burn.

Vs Cashew, 6pts
I hold back 1 vineyard and 1 wurmcalling. Cashew can’t play reclaim because it has no targets. I make lots of 1-1 Wurms to stop the manland, then keep making more until I have 23. Then Attack.

Vs Dark requiem, 6pts
he manaburns to death long before the hatchling does me harm

Niv-Mizzet_Rulez!
01-16-2007, 06:29 PM
fine i post a few of the one i don't know.
Ashnod’s Transmogrant
and even though i know what it is the link is broken. Eladamri’s Vineyard

Mogg
01-16-2007, 06:49 PM
@guest1234
SenorClown will put Illusions of Grandeur into play before Sky Swallower. Because of this, you will gain control of Illusions of Grandeur. You'll lose from being unable to pay the cumulative upkeep cost before SenorClown dies from mana burn (he did gain 20 life, after all).

You're right about the matches with Cashew and DarkRequiem. I forgot that Cashew couldn't empty his hand, and DarkRequiem was just a typo. This'll bring your score up a lot. Thanks for pointing out the errors.

Congrats; you're now in second for January standings with a 2% lead over Rayden_Marz.

@Niv-Mizzet_Rulez!
I've tried the links you mentioned and they work fine. Did you actually click on the link or did you just see a bit of gibberish where the apostrophe should be and decide that it must be broken. I'm not sure why, but MDV often puts some seeminly random numbers in place of the apostraphe. The links still are fine if you actually click on them.

Niv-Mizzet_Rulez!

I've redone all the apostrophes. I noticed when I made the changes that the original apostrophes were a slightly different character. My speculation is that it appeared incorrectly because I copied my post from a word document. I hope it works better for you now.

Man my deck sucked. I guess DD really is unplayable. Also i say we ban vineyard. Its getting used to much.

Mogg
01-16-2007, 07:49 PM
It gets banned by the rule that says if a card is played in at least a third of the decks it gets banned. Four out of nine people played it last round, which more than meets this requirement.

No, if SC puts Illusions in play, pass. Eureka wont give a chance to play Sky Swallower. So he has no beats then.

Thanks for pointing out the errors.

The rules text for Eureka is "Starting with you, players take turns putting an artifact, creature, enchantment, or land card from their hands into play until no one wants to put another card into play."

Official rulings for the card include:
10/15/2006 Anything that triggers during the resolution of this will wait to be put on the stack until everything is put into play and resolution is complete.
10/4/2004 The cards are put into play and will not trigger effects which trigger on such cards being "played".
10/4/2004 The "take turns" means that each player get a chance to put a card in play starting with you and going around the table to the left (unless your multiplayer variant defines a different ordering). A player may decline to put a card into play when it is their turn. The spell ends when all players decline in a row.
10/4/2004 If the card has an X in its mana cost, treat X as zero.

I bolded the important stuff. This should clear up any confusion.

You get GGGGGG at the beginning of each of your precombat main phases and you have nothing to spend it on. Mana burn for six; every turn.
