FIRE REIGN 2

And now I must revert to asking someone more technically knowledgable. So, I figure I'd come here, seeing as it is one of the places I know the most people at. I figured that someone at least has tried this project, so let me get straight down to the question.
I am wanting to create a bot on MTGO. I know in order to do this, I must create a VM, because, unfortunately, I don't have two computers in my room. So VM it is. Now, I've seen guides on how to install an OS on a VM, which seems fairly easy. It's just creating the VM in the first place that's confusing me.
It seems as if I need an OS installation disc and code, VM software (looking at VMWare Player currently), QEMU software, and bot software (preferably YaTBoT, unless some of you guys can recommend better software). I've gotten a little help from this article: http://www.starcitygames.com/php/news/article/11900.html. But it seems like I'm still having troubles understanding what to do. He goes through the whole process quite vaguely, leaving the people kind of out in the open, if they've never tried a project like this before.
I still need to purchase Windows XP for the VM to run on, but I'm going to need that disc in the future anyways, so the price doesn't really bother me. And I can always use the same software on my parent's computer if I decide to venture into two bots. VMWare Player and QEMU software both seem to be open-source, so they shouldn't cost anything. And then I'm going to have to buy another MTGO account ($10) and a license for a bot ($20). So altogether I'm looking for it to be around $200, which isn't as bad as what I initially thought.
Now, I just need someone's help to guide me through the process to setting up the VM. I'm fairly sure I'll be able to do the rest on my own. Downloading MTGO and configuring a bot seem like they will be the easiest of the tasks ahead of me.
So, has anyone ever tried to/set up a VM with their computer? If so, could you go through the procedures you took to do so. Thanks in advance.
Edit: Also, when you have a bot running can you use your computer at all? Or is it completely locked up and you are unable to use anything? And does different bot software allow you to still function with your computer? Or do different computer specs allow different things? Because, I'm afraid that if my computer is not able to do anything while the bot is running, this project is not going to be right for me. I'm only planning on running 1 bot on a 3.0 GhZ Processor, 2 Gig of RAM, 500 GB Hard Drive Machine. In the article, that guys says that he runs three on his system and is still able to go on with his daily work. I'm guessing that means getting on the internet, using a word processor, etc. Maybe a VM affects the bot differently, than if it was running on your actual system? I'm obviously in the dark here guys. Any help on this matter? :(
P.S. Sorry this isn't about the forums/MDV moderators and Streetz, but this is the first place I thought to come when I had troubles. I checked the VMWare Forum, but they're all professional techies over there that talk in code and abbreviations. I'm hoping I'll be able to get better, more user-friendly help here.
