Round 1 Description - August is MDV’s 7th birthday!!! In light of that, we’re going to be celebrating it this month. This round is gonna be a bit more straight-forward than most of the others, but hey that’s good too!
This month, players are to design a card of any type and color. However, their card must contain at least some form of the number seven in any part of the card aside from the flavor text. (The flavor text can have it too, but I want it to be on the actual card as well)
Round 2 Description - C’mon, we all love MDV don’t we? The question is, why? Why do we love MDV? Well, my theory is that we love MDV because of the people in it. Yes, that means you. That’s why I’m dedicating this month’s MCC to the people of MDV.
Participants are to make a card based around a current, or past, member of MDV. Now, just because I want you to make a card based upon a member of MDV, doesn’t mean that you have to make a creature card. Any card type will do if it fits flavorfully.
There’s only two requests that I’m putting on your card. 1) The member you make a card of MUST have more than 250 posts. 2) You cannot make a card based on yourself.
Since this round is based heavily upon the opinions of the members of MDV, I’m going to be asking a couple of my fellow MDV members to guest judge this round beside me. I believe this would be necessary as not only do the opinions of this months participants matter, but I think the opinions of the judges as well will be important this round.
So, ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce to you this round’s guest judges! MZ and AE!
Aesthetics: 5/5
Artistry: 5/5
Creativity: 5/5
Balance: 10/10
Design: 10/10
TOTAL: 35/35
In case you don’t know what these words mean...
Aesthetics: Does your card attract attention, or is it an eye-sore? If your card looks pretty, you get your points here. Not only looks, but correct spelling, grammar, and correct wording apply here as well. I’m a person who pays much attention to many small details if I see a single thing out of place, I’ll most likely dock points.
Artistry: Does the art you find for your card fit your actual card? If you do the art yourself even though you’re horrible at drawing, chances are I’ll give you your points here simply for the effort. Scrunched, blurry, and otherwise ‘ugly’ arts will lose points.
Creativity: Is your idea original, or taken from somewhere else? If your submission is new and exciting, no problem - but if your idea is tired and beaten say buh-bye to some valuable points...
Balance: Would your card totally revamp an entire archtype of decks? If your card could win games entirely on its own, chances are you’re going to lose points. Don’t make your cards too weak either, cuz you’ll lose points that way too. The rarity of your card comes into play here as well.
Design: Could / Would WotC ever print something similar to this, or would they spit at the idea of something like this existing in their game? Simple as that...
Here’s some basic guidelines - failure to comply with these guidelines may result in point-loss or even DQ:
Round 1 Rules - 1) As always, stick to the Magic-multiverse.
2) Use the number seven in any way that you like. You could have a CMC of seven, an activates ability that costs seven, a creature who’s P/T is 7/7 or maybe even two number that ADD UP to seven. It’s your choice.
3) Your card can be any color and of any type.
4) Your card now must use the new M10 wording.
Round 2 Rules - Here’s some basic guidelines - failure to comply with these guidelines may result in point-loss or even DQ:
1) Since this round is based upon actual people, you may stray away slightly from the Magic-multiverse. However, don’t stray TOO far.
2) As stated before, the MDV member you choose must have more than 250 posts and cannot be yourself.
3) Your card can be any color and of any type.
4) Please put both of your cards in the same post, in the correct order.
Other than that, you’re free to roam. Everyone knows the basic rules, but in case there’s any newbies around:
Now on to the standard rules.
1) Your card must be in card form.
This means you'll have to do extra work beyond simply designing the card. First, you'll need a way to render the card. I highly recommend the Magic Set Editor (http://magicseteditor.sourceforge.net) as it's still highly updated, and is very simple to use. The best looking renders are done by hand in a Photoshop program, but this is not necessary.
You will also need to find a website to host the image for it to be submitted. There are numerous free ones out there if you don't have access to a web host already. One I know to work personally that just requires registration and is very easy to use is Photobucket (http://photobucket.com/). Or you can simply just attach it to your thread.
Which leads to one last thing you have to find for your card - art.
2) All artwork should be credited and non-copyrighted.
While it may be very hard to find out who made a random image you rip straight off an image search. I highly recommend you locate galleries that will let you know who drew it while drawing it. Two massive galleries that you should know are Elfwood (http://www.elfwood.com) and deviantART (http://www.deviantart.com/).
Make sure you check the artist's profile page throughly to see if they are copyrighted are not. You can even go the extra step and ask for permission, which I highly encourage. It is essential that you credit them on the card as well.
3) Your entry must submitted by September 18th (last date for entries and edits is the 20th) Simple enough? Submit, edit, change as many times as you want until that date, then there will be no more.
4) Submit your entry in this thread.
This thread is for submission only, there will be a discussion thread created for comments on others cards or talking about the contest itself. A small description and/or explanation of your entry is acceptable.
5) Your card must be balanced.
Do not expect to win if you create some off the wall insane creature that has every ability for 10 mana and is a 9/5. The goal is to create a card that could seemingly be printed. From the flavor to the mana cost to the power level of the card - all parts are considered.
6) Do not create a new keyword.
Use existing keywords, be careful when using block based ones such as Affinity, Splice, and Radiance. In the past, we've allowed some leniency with things such as Protection from X or Xcycling. Don't stretch it too far though.

Round 1 Entry:
http://i321.photobucket.com/albums/nn363/Luthervamplord/Cards%20Images/AgroganoftheSeventhCircle.jpg
I ask, if it is not too much trouble that is; that you make yourself familiar with this extract of Dante's Inferno (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inferno_(Dante)#Seventh_Circle), the First Book of the Divine Comedy before you score or comment of this card.
Also, just for poops and giggles:
Agrogan - Seven Letters
Seventh - Seven Letters (freaky huh)
Seventh Circle - A Reference to the Seventh Circle of Hell
Minotaur Warrior - Most likely class of the Guardian of the Seventh Circle according to Dante's Inferno
Warrior - Seven Letters
CMC - 7
Flavor Text: Seven words, also another reference to Dante's Inferno and the souls which inhabit the Seventh Circle.
On a more serious note:
The card is a re-hash of an existing card (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=78854) so I don't expect much in the way or originality points but I hope that the fusion of flavor and function will pull me through.

Who else could it be honestly; without the big guy MDV would have never happened - there is no bigger contribution possible. The idea is designed to be a Naya style card; I hope I got the wording/colors right.

Back early from vacation, I decided to change my card.
For those of you curious, it's just the converted mana cost and the number of creatures affected.

Well, as we're now looking for a second card, I thought I might make a prismatic card for a prismatic person I see about MDV. He seems to always build interesting combinations, though he has to switch a few cards out every once in a while, so I made this:

It's based off how Jake's posts are like 7 paragraphs long with long words in all of them. Here is the text version that's a little easier on the eyes.
Kessler, Keeper of Words-1UU
Legendary Creature-Wizard
When Kessler, Keeper of Words enters the battlefield, you may exile the top three cards of your library face up.
When Kessler, Keeper of Words deals combat damage to an opponent, you may cast one of the exiled cards without paying its mana cost.
When Kessler, Keeper of Words leaves play, return all cards still exiled this way to the top or bottom of your library in any order.

The responsibilty of overseeing this eclectic collection of work is sometimes a daunting task. However, when carefully considered, I believe the opportunity will build charecter and assist my quest to accumulate knowledge.
In the modernization of today’s literature, a librarian has to have organizational skills as well as comprehension of the material in which he is intrusted in.
While I am more than willing to dedicate my life to this field, the important part is making sure all is in order if I may perish.
The library must live on even when I have not.

August Submission:
If even after the Grand Creature Type Update Wizards is still allowed to make up new creature types (here presenting evidence A: Alluring Siren, and evidence B: Oran-Rief Survivalist (http://forums.mtgsalvation.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=94524&d=1251805779)), then there's no reason why I can't also. Because after all, if I truly were a planeswalker locked in duel with another planeswalker, I'd damn well summon a Walrus to fight at my side!
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j56/YWNightmare2/Frost_WalrusS.jpg
Flavor text is reference to the reason why no other Walrus exists yet in Magic - like the Kavu, they were 'bred' by circumstances. (The fact that they already existed in our real plane is irrelevant, here presenting evidence C: Lorwyn has no humans, it doesn't mean humans don't exist in other planes; the very same plane has Noggles, and yet, so far no other plane has them.)
This also marks the beginning of the Era of the Walruses. If ThunderHog doesn't make it absolutely impossible for me to do so, I plan on making all my MCC submissions from here on Walruses. Long live Walruses!
Blah:
- CMC = 7
- 7 lines in text box
- Power + Toughness = 7
- Ability requires seven (7) snow permanents
- Errr... Artist's name = 7 characters?
- Gaaah, aren't that enough sevens? The card we're supposed to design "must contain at least some form of the number seven;" it doesn't mean "each and every square inch, word, and symbol in the card must contain a seven in it." GAAH!

I really like the design of the card, Feel took a hit because of the Mana cost in the rules text has that drop shadow on it that shouldn't be their ever. on Balanace I felt you weren't being totally fair to the player of the card on this one, but I see where you can have trouble with that. On the Creative factor I felt I've seen this card and cards like it time and time again, so really you still got most of the points.

Solid card, Design takes point since WOTC would tweek it slightly. Balance took a slight hit because I'm worried about the effect of anywhere from 0 to 7 creatures hitting the field and then going balastic. Creativity took a hit since Sneek Attack+6 is what this feels like.

All Hail the Champ. A simple card with a wind up and powers that make things just make me go "YES" yes, it's a little stolen from Konda's Hound but that took points away from Creativity and the Design drop is because WOTC would do something like this in this day in age as these stats with just tweeks to the typeline, name, and flavor text. Seriously. This IS a WINNING card.

I like the idea of having a full hand to use, but then again, I wouldn't of made it Rare. I would of done it at common. also having any player activate it is nice, but overall I don't find the card helpful unless you play it in a deck where you have 7 cards in hand and you find ways to make sure your opponent doesn't. The card is beautiful, it's a great idea too, but I don't see it being balanced or WOTC worthy.
Why? - Everyone discards their hand, which makes this Nightmare at best in a Duel a 14/14 Flying creature. Which is insane, but in multiplayer it can get even worse. the cost for the card is rightfully placed high, but so high that I have trouble seeing anyone outside of hardcore casual black using this only as a kill shot, and only as a backup of the primary win theory.

One, I took points off of artisty because it's a google art, and I would of rather seen at least some artist attribbuted.
Two, past the art I love the card and would/could see it in WOTC.
Three, it needs a rewording."Reveil the top seven cards of your library, choose an instant or sorcery card and play it without paying it's mana cost. Exile the rest." y'know something like that. YWN has a great shop that could be used to tool the idea better.

Right now it's in my mind a bit underpowered, but I know that this particular underpowered card grants some really cool possibilities combo wise. I enjoy the use of Haggis semi-infamous "a man in a kilt is a man and a half" which is the explaination for the 1(1/2)/1(1/2) P/T, but if you are using that you should of framed it in Silver so we know it denotes a Un-Block theme or Un-Block feel. Rarity symbol is Red so I can't make head or tails of what it's suppose to be. Those causes a 2 point drop in Aesthetics. Balance. R for a 1/1 or R for a 2/2 both seem a little weak in todays Magic. so Design took a hit on that and the Un-Issue. Balance well, it just seems a bit underpowered.

Love this art, but anyways. Design took a hit because of "at the beginning of your next upkeep" which means it's like a slowtrip (cantrip that you have to wait for) to discard the cards, even though you seemed to forget after second main phase, in the end of turn step there is the cleanup phase where you have to limit your hand to seven there. Balance well, that takes some minor points off due to I don't know where to put it "slightly over/under powered" seems to fit for it.

"lose the game" cards even if your the one in command of them doesn't seem like fun to me, so that takes some major points away from Design. For BBBB you also make it unsymetrical in it's effect (see Braids) which takes points from Balance. Here's the same idea.
Malevolence 3BB

I love the use of 7 here. I don't really see the need for white and red, but I get the bleed purposes of the card. Yesh... this card is just... it's something that pains me. I love the theory you wanted to go for, but again I look at it and get hurt. First and foremost in cards like this I think the word "may" is actually used both ways, in the case of this card, it's desperately needed. Wizards because of how it's printed in front of me would NEVER do a card like this without MAJOR tweaking. Aesthetics lost 2 points because of the white frame around the art. the Artistry lost a point because I didn't see the connection from the card to the creature outside of stealing and the list time I checked Eggs =/= Mana.

Now this one is nice. I feel it's really balanced without taking it too far either way. I like the second ability, but you lost a point in Aesthetics for not turning that 2 into a it's that big of a deal yeah. Past that I love the art and the rest of the card, but I don't think Wizards will be using it any time soon.

TH’s thoughts: Although it fits, it’s horribly weak and not to mention extremely boring...

"Draw up to your maximum hand size" uhh... problem. What if you have Graceful Adept out? Yeah, that's why this card fails. Completely. Looks great though. Balance in this case means "card is overcosted and week in power." Design says "maybe, I wouldn't hold my breath"

I'm not going to lie to you. I'm very biased on this card, because I knew and fought with the man, but I'm going to try to be as well... un-troll as I can be. the card screams "Meh" I like the unique ability, but it's nothing more than a rehash of Repentant Vampire. Heck! even at those standards this card is still weak. The good thing about it being weak, it that it's balance is very close to perfect by definitaion.
