So fellas, I offer the first entry, what do you think of the idea?

CoglineErro
01-29-2009, 08:03 AM
@eldros: I think they meant it could be sillier without becoming Un, yours is definantly and Uncard.
@Judges: Enjoyed the intro. ANd yes I agree Azrael shouldn't have been able to win last round, but unfortunantly the card was well-designed and...fit the flavor...*wince*. But this seems fun.
@Everyone: How do you like me now? Atleast the card I put.

final_press
01-29-2009, 08:11 AM
@Eldros: I'm affraid Cogline is correct, your card is just too silly, even for this round. All those sorts of Un things like balancing cards on your head and tearing cards to pieces are not what we're looking for here... but the cards can be light-hearted and fun in nature, without being punished for bad flavour. While you've hit the flavour very well, in the grand scheme of things this card does nothing to affect the game, other than tying up your mana, so both balance and design would be a '0' from this judge.

edit - I have now changed the wording on the intro to better indicate this.

Eldros

@final_press: Alright, it was not hard to tweak so it wouldn't be so Un- , at least I hope. Drop a word if I still need to do correction in this domain fp

@CoglineErro: You sir, find a flavor very fitting to the flavor text number 2.

@eldros: Personally I think the name of the counter should be changed. It feels too forced onto the flavor. Also, who is the "he" in your card? It says "You might say he was a 'mutton' for punishment." I would figure that out as well. As for wording, I would have put it as:
2: Put a sheep counter on target creature.
Creatures with sheep counters become 0/1 with no abilities.
Pay 1 life: Remove a sheep counter from target creature. Any player may play this ability.

Though I'm not certain as to where each goes, I've mostly been working off of Bomb Squad.

So, uh...what exactly is up with #2? I'm not sure I understand it.

CoglineErro
01-29-2009, 09:13 AM
It's a word. Moto, to be exact. What's not to understand?

ThunderHog
01-29-2009, 01:37 PM
'Moto' is Japanese for 'More' I believe.

Flavor #3: "Why do overlook and oversee mean opposite things?"
Is there a word missing in there, or is it supposed to be grammatically incorrect?

CoglineErro
01-29-2009, 02:02 PM
Mo´to
n. 1. (Mus.) Movement; manner of movement; particularly, movement with increased rapidity; - used especially in the phrase con moto, directing to a somewhat quicker movement; as, andante con moto, a little more rapidly than andante, etc.

ThunderHog

That works too...

I just made it Goblinese in my card though.

Fair enough, I'll ask then my fellow contestant then

YWN gave me a similar wording, but there is two things I don't like with it.

1. The creatures doesn't become sheeps
2. Players other than the controller can remove the counter and that not how it is intended.
3. The ability can be played every time, and not during its controller upkeep, as intended.

I may understand the sentence wrong, as I'm not a native english-speaker, but 'he' is the caster/inventor of the curse. And the punishment is either the opponent play shepherd and keep harmless sheeps, or he as to take into is vital force to keep is critters as they should be.

Is there a word missing in there, or is it supposed to be grammatically incorrect?

How should it be grammatically incorrect? The sentence say that, although 'look' and 'see' have similar meanings, 'overlook' and 'oversee' have opposite ones. But as I said, I'm not native english-speaker, so I can't be sure.

Also, Moto means motorcycle in french: :E

Correct English grammar would make it say something like: "Why do you overlook and oversee mean and opposite things?"

OR

"Why do we overlook and oversee but mean opposite things?"

Honestly, that second one doesn't make much sense either. All I know is that this flavor text probably won't be used by anyone because it doesn't make any sense at all.

CoglineErro
01-30-2009, 09:48 AM
the text is sayng that the two words have the same pre-fix and synonyms for their core word, but yet they mean the opposite. Kin of like "Why do we drive on a parkway and par on a driveway?" kind of question.

Luthervamplord
01-30-2009, 10:29 AM
Actually, that's not quite true here Cog. See to Overlook something is to miss a detail, to pass something over in a casual glance without fully absorbing the whole but rather the key features. But to Oversee something is to literally stand there and watch it happen, to be there for it's duration and ensure it happens as planned.

So, to generalize the statement "Why do overlook and oversee mean opposite things?" means "Why does taking a casual glance and a detailed look mean different things."

When looked at in this manner, it becomes obvious that the writer is actually making a mockery the listener; he's suggesting that he could do what he's doing with little effort if he really needed to.

An example of how you could work this (BTW, Not my submission so Judges please take this as what it is - Aid to other players) within the context of a card would be something like this:

Callus Tutor 2UB
Sorcery
Choose One - Draw four cards, then discard two cards; or search your library for a card, reveal it and put it into your hand.
"Why do overlook and oversee mean opposite things?"

ThunderHog
01-30-2009, 11:09 AM
I know what the words mean... What I'm saying is that the sentence itself is grammatically incorrect.

CoglineErro
01-30-2009, 11:26 AM
I also know what it means, Luther that is exactly what I was saying. And, no, TH it does not break any grammatical rules that I noticed.

Eldros
01-30-2009, 12:36 PM
I don't see where the grammatical incorrectness is? If you replace overlook by white and oversee by black it makes sense grammatically and means something similar.

TH, not only is neither of those options grammatically correct, but neither makes any sense.

If it helps, why not writes it as "Why do 'overlook' and 'oversee' mean opposite things?". Or how about "Why do the words 'overlook' and 'oversee' mean opposite things?". Use whichever ones makes you happy. Either way I fail to see why people are finding the sentence so confusing.

Is the wording on my card correct? I couldn't quite tell if that was the gramagically correct way to say that...

@Teepee: Try "Whenever ~ is dealt damage, destroy it." ala Death Pits of Rath

My entry went through serious retemplating (thanks to YWN) and I also changed the name of the counter as curse counters.

CoglineErro
02-02-2009, 09:23 AM
@ Elistral: I think you meant:
Overlook//Oversee
BU//1WG
Instant//Instant
Counter target spell with converted mana cost X, where X is the number of lands target player controls.//Add X mana to your mana pool where X is the number of lands you control.
?Maybe?

CoglineErro

What you have now is a flip card, try looking at this gatherer entry (http://ww2.wizards.com/gatherer/CardDetails.aspx?&id=126218) and use that template.

It might be just me, but I have difficulties to link it to the flavor. Mind explaining it?

Punkrockanarchymagic

I've always considered the word omission to be synonymous with censorship through overzealous editing, or an intentional removal of offensive parts of a piece of art before it is seen or a book before it goes to print, though I've also heard it used as a description of a editorial error where a part of a text goes missing unintentionally.

The flavor is that the hand is left with it's most needed card (as you draw it up after the spell has resolved), but certain key support cards will be discarded to weaken an opponent's future plays. In omssion, spells are kept or lost due to bais (of Omission's controler's choice of discard), errors (the risk in possibly picking the wrong card to hide), lies (the target of Omission can easily bluff what the hidden top card is) and negligence (the failure of either player to choose the correct zone a card should go to- hand, graveyard of top of library).

I wanted to build a better Stupor. Anyway, I'll edit this post with a comment on your card soon.

Announcement to all you fellow awesome Judges: I know you're both busy atm, but try to get your results to me as soon as you can after the closing date on Friday. Doesn't have to be right away, as I'm going away for a few days so there will be a delay in my being able to post anything up. Hopefully no more than a few days though.

Announcement to all you talentless little peons: Some of the judges have far better things to do than award your pitiful entries 0/75. As such, there will be a small, but utterly exceptable (you WILL accept it) delay on the results being posted.

Oh you'll get your entries you will. In fact, on Friday the 13th I'm getting drunk and going to see the retelling of Jason's origin. I will then come home, pumped for blood and thoroughly decimate your cards. Not because they are crappy (which they are), but because I can. Submit!

You all lose.

I DQ'ed every single entry because I didn't feel like judging crappy entries. Come back when you're a different person. Just so I don't have to judge again, the winners are Streetz, Michael Zeora, and MaxfireXSA. Streetz because he owns the site and will never get around to judging the next round. MZ because he's so proactive about not wasting my time that he banned himself just so he wouldn't be tempted to enter. MaxfireXSA because the kid is a just a winner.
