This month you can take any creature or planeswalker card and upgrade it's status to a new level. We did this once in a former contest, and will try it again as it proved interesting and several commented on wanting Vanguard possibilities. Others hated on Vanguard and pleaded in private to not do it. Guess, what Vanguard is in this round, but it's optional.
Here is the heiarchy of types for this contest:
Normal > Legendary > Planeswalker > Vanguard
You can upgrade, but you ABSOLUTELY CAN NOT downgrade. Please include your source card with your submission as well, so there is absolutely no question about what your entry is.

I'm going to do this differently than Cashew Normally does at this point. But I'll all make sense - kinda.
I'm going to divide them up into each group - then send the top 2 of each group (or 1 if the group is small enough) to the WG for voting.
For the sake of Ease on my mind - I'm starting with the Vanguards, then Legendary, then Planeswalkers.
Vanguard Bracket:
5. GG Crono - "Oona"
- This version of Oona does keep to the idea, but overall I don't find her that effective to the game.
4. Zaknifa - "Boris Devilboon"
- with only 10 life I don't see his ability happening too often unless your running Burn. As much as I like the idea - and the enjoyment of old school - I can't see it working out.
3. CoglineErro - "Dralnu, Lich Lord"
- I like the idea, but I'd be so worried about running against a dedicated discard deck.
2. Maleficent - "Hunted Lammasu"
- I have to give a good deal of bonus points for taking such a risk of taking a normal creature and making it a Vanguard card, and making it work, but I feel it's drawback is a bit too steep.
*1. Luthervamplord - "Chandra Nalaar"
- Obvious for Burn, I find this card the most effective and coolest of the the Vanguard. only 4 cards in hand and 15 Life - but you get an effective Burn Spell at any time you want it and a pass on the ease of playing high power burn spells. Even in a deck like RDW or BDW this would be a nice kicker to a great deck.
Legendary Creature
9. zarkus - "Mogg Fanatic Survivor"
- no points for adding Persist. Sorry.
8. SoftWarewolf - "Scragnoth the Asserted"
- how is this an improvement? you've lowered to cost, took away it's protection from blue, half of it's "cannot be countered", and added "might as well be indestructable"
7. blinx511 - "Soulmonger"
- Improved Spiritmonger - orignality is questionable at best, creativity is OK, but overall I find the card just very much a "broken playtest" version of the actual printed.
6. boiwithteeth - "Robusis of Core"
- Win more? it's like you just made Coretapper just a bit more than it's normal semi-broken form - nothing wrong with it - not just my cup of tea on the originality and balance.
5. _b4g3r_ - "Kird Nacatl"
- I like the idea - but I just don't find it horribly original.
4. NeoMagicwarrior - "Tim, Sorcerer Adept"
- Improved - yeah, good, sure. Original? hardly.
3. p-chan - "Daikonran"
- I like the card - but that 10 damage drawback is just a bit steep - although hard to get with 2 coins (right?)
*2. mindfleischer - "Woebringer Autocrat"
- I like the good mix of Sengir Autocrat with Woebringer Demon - although this isn't the strongest guy on the block - I'm sure it's just there to be awesome and painful. Plus the kick of Grandeur doesn't hurt it, but doesn't over do it.
*1. George G - "Jamie Faye"
- I need to give a lot of credit to George for his really simple yet original build. Bonus points to Flavor Text off hand reference to Karn.
Planswalker Creatures
17. eding - "Jhoria of Dominaria"
- Overpowered to say the least. So overpowered I just can't see past the level of Wow that's way too powerful. Suffocating Blast on -2 is just a no way in my book - -3 would of been pushing it -4 would of been the spot in my mind. +1 ability just screams Mill and Abuse it. and in U/R/B that isn't a bad idea, but that's just sick to give. -6 is just way to powerful, not only do you screw your opponent's options and tempo, you're taking an extra turn? No, that won't fly at my table.
16. evol_intentions - "Vuliev, Orzhov Parun"
- Nice reference to the Guildpact book, but that's WAY too wordy for me, and it's this low on the list because like kingez you forgot a + ability to make it's -X killer idea worth while.
15. kingez36 - "Jedit Ojanen, Ascended"
- Looks like someone forgot to give it a +1 ability. Thus printing the -8 on it makes it just look amateurish - not that the card in my mind of it doesn't look awesome.
14. Artifactor - "Glissa Ascendant"
- I can tell this is your first Draft, because really, she's overcosted and underpowered except at her -8 which I can promise she'll be gunned against ASAP. Overall she's OK, just not good enough in comparison to the rest.
13. Azrael Subucni - "Silvos Mirarus"
- Personally, you should of flipped the Static Ability with the +1. That's just my personal opinion. because as it sits - it's very powerful, for that +1 ability, you should of just made it static, while the static ability is good - but you could of made it "until end of turn" the -8 is just overkill personally. it's really a Green Variant on Wrath of God at that point. Personally - I don't see Silvos in the card itself, I do see a hell of a lot of Mirari's Wake. (personally - Kamahl Fist of Krosa would of been a better idea.)
12. Muse&Force734 - "Higure Who Stopped the World"
- Pound for Pound this card is weird. A) +1 for a double bounce is like saying "I'll help me out by bouncing something that gives a great CIP, and something of the opponent that'll hurt they're tempo" which is nice and awesome. -3 (which it can use right off the bat) - is a Alpha Strike FTW. - and it's final ability is a Time Stop. (which he forgot to give credit to) Overall I think it's just a little too overpowered.
11. Sensi Kakashi - "Lim-Dul the Unpossessed"
- Orginality aside, the use of older cards and itself to define the "upgraded" version is a good idea - sadly I read him off and go. "Good Lim-Dul, but it's not worth it in comparison to Vess."
10. 3cheesed - "Nighteyes, Soul Gorger"
- I barley see about half the cards you've listed, but I do see them on close inspection. I do have to give a lot of good orginality points here, but overall I don't find the card being that good outside a dedicated deck built around abusing it. Borderline overpowered to broken levels of how crazy evil this guy could be.
9. Castle - "Venser, Time Crafter"
- That's a nice cheap, and slightly too powerful for the cost Planeswalker - that's what Venser should of been, that's my opinion right there, not it's "Shaper Savant" variant that Wizards actually printed. What were they thinking? Flavorwise the +1 should of been a blink on target creature you don't control, but Twiddle works too.
8. morewood - "Ghost Council of Orzhova"
- Sickly enough I find this card (and it's original) a bit underpowered by itself. I find the abilities good - and the -7 really could of been lowered to like -6 really. it's in the middle crowd because I don't thinks it's a bad card - but it's a long shot from a good card.
7. KlassyReborn - "Teferi of Zhalfir"
- Teferi himself isn't original, but I like how you used several of his older cards to define the Planeswalking version. If you plan to reprint this card though - you'll have to explain phasing on the card... good luck with that.
6. akashmar - "Doran, the Siege Tower"
- Personally I would limit the +1 ability a bit more to being maybe a +0/+1 counter - but the rest of the card feels good overall, with Doran's own power as a EOT effect at a nice cost. the final ability seems almost seems balanced for the cost, tilting towards underpowered actually.
5. Niv-Mizzet_Rules! - "Niv-Mizzet the Enlightened"
- I like this card. the -7 is a bit overpowered, but it's really the icing on the cake considering you really do have to hold back on that tempting -3 ability to get to 8 counter before the End of the game. Scry 2 at the +1 is fantastic and almost broken in those colors - but it's a nice move.
4. death_by_aggro - "Volrath the Risen"
- Well done DBA, using almost the exact wording on those cards you've found a nice utility Planeswalker that would help almost any deck. It's a little on the strong side thought, but not unplayable even at that cost.
3. Thunderhog - "Teysa Karlov"
- Nicely done TH, nicely done. These are simple abilities that really do seem to grow with the cost of them, as smooth as glass and feels PERFECT to her character both on the card orginal from the Guildpact Novel.
*2. Cashew - "Raziel the Rat Prince"
- Some might ***** that Cashew runs this contest and thought it up, it's a bit unfair that he's participating while even someone else judges, but at the same time I'm not going to curve down Cashew because really, that's a great card. Simple +1 that isn't a big deal. -2 that tutors for a Rat (that minor Ratcatcher right there). -6 gives all those little Rat tokens made a big boost (Swarm of Rats) - right out of the idea of Ajani Goldmane (from Lorwyn's Planeswalkers)
*1. YWN - "Michiko Konda"
- Impressive. Static abilities instead of activated ones - big risk, but she's an effective Pariah with an added sting. Personally I would be nuts to not have this go out for the top spot - A) it's Unique, B) it fits the character, C) it's VERY playable.
