This month around, I have to list why I didn't choose cards. In the end, the theme was largely ignored and people really, really tried to create Black cards, I have no idea why. Lets revisit the theme again real fast.

This month, I want you to design a ghostie or a ghoul, or any kind of traditional Halloween nasty. Base it on myth and lore throughout the world.

Honestly, ask yourself. How on theme was your entry? How many based theirs on real myth or lore? How many even designed a creature? I was very lenient and went with anything remotely tied to Halloween, Dia de los Meuertos, or any real world place, event or thing, but some of you may see yourselves dramatically railed for lack of theme adherence.

Top 6 - Submitted to Guild

1 - akashmar - Witchhunt
Writer's generally chose this over all the others, sadly not because of how strong it was, but because of how weak the others were. It's our clear winner though nearly doubling the votes of others.

2 - YWN - Infectious Lycanthrope
People just didn't like this card despite fairly good design. The artwork was a major downsell for many voters.

3 - Final Press - Haunted House
Too catchy and too similar to Ice Floe in creative scale.

4 - Maleficent - Mask of Secrets
Simply trounced as alot of words, for a lot of nothing.

5 - flounce - Blood Golem
Called a Golem a Zombie. Those were the main complaints, that and it's a pure Spike card.

6 mindfleisher - Ophelia, Queen of the Hallowitches
Too close to Sharoom the Hedgeman or whatever. Hallowitch isn't a real tribe. Those were the main complaints.

No major mistakes, Good Theme, Not Black

7 - Muse&Force734 - Jack O Lantern
Definitely in theme. Fun little card I almost chose.

8 - CoglineErro - Bloody Mary
Fun card. Artwork and flavor text sucked. If you had worded it something like "Whenever you play the third spell this turn, Bloody Mary deals 5 damage to target player." Anything that made, you gear a deck towards playing several spells in a turn, I probably would have given you my vote and it may have won.

9 - Lonelywisp - Shifting Spirit
Arguably on theme, arguably a little boring. Only real point of contention is that coin flips...are very much Red and White dealing with absolutes and Blue with Logic would hate that.

10 - GG Crono - Garden Skulker
Fairly in the theme. Was an interesting card, that I almost chose.

11 - Niv-Mizzet Rulez! - Ferocious Werewolf
Fun, wordy, but fun.

12 - boiwithteeth - Hissi's Grasp
Good in theme, despite not being a creature. While demony, it matched a real world demon-type from another country instead of some made up nasty. A little boring sadly.

13 - Softwarewolf - Nokken
Seemed a little underpowered to me. Samurai of the Pale Curtain at a mere mana more seemed like a drastic rise in power compared to this guy. Kinda question how you translated since he's a water spirit.

14 - MechMage - Dr. Jekyll
Needed a little more work to get there, particuarlly in the wording department.

On Theme, Card Wanted to be Black

16 - Kaldra - Haunter's Stare
Interesting concept, although this seemed to be Black to me.

15 - VampyrLestat - Dia de los Muertos
Why is this pure White card producing Black and White creatures with White mana? Kinda wished your card exuded more of the flavor of the event as well, this seems more like the Anglo concept of spirits and dead than the Spanish.

17 - 3cheesed - The Harvester
Quite simply, this didn't seem Blue. Whole concept seemed Black. At least you were on theme.

Extreme lack of the theme

18 - Thunderhog - Spiritual Landfill
Good card, that lacks any essence of the theme.

19 - KlassyReborn - Gateway to the Afterlife
While is a rather cool card, I had to say...where's the theme?

20 - Luthervamplord - Aspect of Turmoil
How is this on theme at all?

21 - NeoMagicwarrior - Frost Demon
How is this on theme at all?

Moderate card design difficulties, on theme, on color

22 - Artifactor - Bloodthirsty Chupacabra
Needed more work and help with wording and flavor.

23 - Castle - Fortune Telling
Good image, good power level. Wording needed help mainly:
Hellbent - If you have no cards in hand, draw an additional card.
Flavor text was poor for the card's subject. Arguably in theme.

Combinations of Theme and Being Black, Major Mistakes, Power Level Issues

24 - kingez36@hotmail.co.uk - Mausoleum of the living-dead
Still seems a little broken to me considering it's not Legendary and Hall of the Bandit King exists.

25 - death_by_aggro - Hollow Moon
Artifact? Seemed more like an enchantment to me. Regardless of that, definitely, not an uncommon. The draw effect seemed a tad powerful with Affinity in existence. Not really on theme.

26 - p-chan - A Santa Compana
Didn't like the translation from concept to card. The third ability seemed very off to me and this card could have been done much better without suspend in general. Thanks for staying in the theme.

27 - Haphazard Ninja - Masquerade
I didn't get this card's concept and flavor at all. They didn't seem to match.

28 - JUNkYARD KiNG - Eyreequel, the Lost
Who is this guy? Why is he so big for a Faerie? What's up with soulfshift being on here?

29 - Sensei Kakashi - Trick//Treat
Both seem overpowered on their own yet alone on a split card where power should be slightly watered down.

30 - Madmp - Graveyard of the Waking Dead
Lands are hard, however giving it a potentially devestating ability and rainbow potential is silly.

31 - b4g3r - Empty Shell
Fun concept, it just went a little too far in abilities and could have used some simplifications. Somewhat in theme.

32 - RiGer - Raziel the Unholy
Your card is screaming Black flavor. Your second ability is White, but the rest is Black. You even made partially Black creatures from a 4x White card. 4x White mana should scream White, not Black. Plus, why would you ever call it Unholy and try to make it White? Not on theme.

33 - Azrael Subnuchi - Beguiling Mask
Major missteps here.
Choose a card in your hand. An opponent chooses one.
Okay so you pick a card then your opponent chooses that card.....

- Entries may move some, there is an entry I can't access from where I am in my personal email -

I look forward to seeing the winner this time around; I'm not sure if there's truly a clear winner this time. As for my card, meh, I can't complain. I wasn't really getting "into it" this month. Hopefully I'll feel better after Haloween and can make a serious attempt again:p.

I think I should adopt the goal of "Get as close to the 'winning group' as possible without getting in." Also, if you know the legend behind Bloody Mary my flavor text is about the perfect text to go with. Also, my card has appeal to a certain group as it is written. Saying it your way would completely change it and make it a much simpler card and make it no longer geared towards the type of player i was wanting.

I have to agree with DBA... I wasn't too into it... I guess Trick would have worked better as some enchantment thing... although I dont see treat as being all that overpowered... I mean in use with othe cards sure, but all in all it's more about luck I think.

Anyways, i kinda enjoyedthis.. maybe I'll try it again next month...

Um, I don't think you guys understood my card... you pick a card, and your opponent picks one of 2 effects to happen.

I mean, I expected to do badly this month, but I didn't expect to do that badly....

Number 11, wow!!!(Dang, missed top 10 by 1.(That was my goal this month) ) with my luck the past the contest i was expecting to bomb a third time. And i had a feeling YWN's card would make the top 6.(By process of elimination his card has to be on this level).

Have I made it into the top 6 then? But my card wasn't even a creature.... Am I to assume it was sufficienty traditional in it's halloweenie-ness to get it that far?

Yes and blurred lines between haunted houses and being actual creatures.

I thought I had posted these in three days ago, apparently the edit did not go through. I put in several comments on what the judges thought. It was kind of a sad moment for them because they really didn't like anything, and I asked them to find something else and they still couldn't find anything. Although Bloody Mary got some kudos.

Oh well, next month maybe we'll shine again.

Congrats Akashmar.

Nutz to me... didn't actually research any existing cards before this one.. so didn't know that I was essentially copying Ice Floe. :(
Still it's a podium finish, so I can't really complain.

Thats a Streetz thing and the man is buried under RL issues so I'm sure we can let Streetz off something like this.

You think that's bad? Cashew still owes me a comic from the Fallen Empires competition from... March, was it? :P
Not that I'm really fussed.. but I thought I'd bring it up, cos I love ripping the guy! :D

So you're saying those never arrived? I got them back after I mailed them the first time and sent them again with the help of a postal agent...hmm. I guess they are in limbo land or some random schmo's hands.
