MDV Extended Tournament Pairings/Results

[Haggis]

This Is the Pairing/Results Page for the MDV Extended Swiss tournament.

Your pairings will be posted in two places: This post and as a new post in the thread (to bump it). Along with the pairings I'll give you a deadline of when those matches need to be played.

Results will be posted in this thread. Result pages should include the number of games each player won (IE I beat Streetz 2-1). Both players must report. If one player reports first the other simply has to quote the message and underneath it post the word "confirmed".

Once all the results are in or the deadline comes I'll post the pairings for the next round.

This tournament will be 5 rounds of swiss with a top 4 cut.

You have been paired randomly, you have 3 days to get you matches in. If you cannot come to a mutual time to play your match, send me or Lionden a PM quoting your conversation with your opponent, showing us that you made an effort but could not come to an agreement. This will result in a draw. If your opponent doesn't respond to your attempts to set up a time, send us a message showing this and you'll be credited for a win. If you both disappear you both get losses.

Its better in Legacy when you can sac everything to a suspended Greater Gargadon (or keep a few lands), search for Barren Glory with that Academy Rector you had in play...then when it triggers next upkeep float a B for One With Nothing and win.

I didn't expect it to bump into September, which sure will be a very busy month for me. I won't be home a fair number of days, and the time difference between Europe and the US will make it nearly impossible for me to play my games.

I have been very leniant this tourny on deadlines. as teh first round took a week to get done.

The lionden 3nd3r match won't be taking place till around 10pm tonight. So if you guys could get her done tonight or early tomarrow that would be great. I would like to post 3rd round pairings around 7-8 central tomarrow.

I know its not that much time but the legacy tournament is starting soon, and i'd like to have this wrapped up before it starts.

3 days fellas. You've got to get your games in. If you can't get it in, then let the judge know. 3 days is how long we have agreed on since the league started. You should be playing two games a week minimum. If that is not possible, then respectfully step down.

Just keep in mind how many people are depending on you:

The judge is trying to keep things flowing smoothly
The other players are wanting to find out who wins
People not playing but watching are wanting to join the next tournament
The people who are not doing well want to get into a new one for a fresh start

Alright folks, so I did a little math, and according to my calculations, there are a few different scenarios: Scenario A = 10 points gets you into the top 4. Scenario B: We wind up with 5 people at 12 and someone misses on breakers. Scenario C: We have one at 13 and 3 and twelve and we get a nice clean cut. Either way...no one has secured a spot yet. The winner of Beebles and Tynion (assuming they play it and don't draw) will be the first to clinch (even if 5 people tie they'll have the best breakers). Everyone at 6 needs to keep on winning.

Game 2 - My combo was Pithing Needled and the game ended up a complete stalemate. With my Wheel of Fates and Howling Mines I ended up milling him to death. I had 5 cards left in my deck. XD

Since Fudawg was paired down, he falls to the lowest ranking 1 loss. (this could be the wrench in my works..)

I already beat Neo, therefore if I win, he can not play in table one.

TH has a better win % than LD currently, and won 2-0 so LD can not over take him.

Pairings are random. In the test that I did on my Reporter, I actually had myself getting pairied up in the last round (assuming I beat Neo, which isn't an easy assumption to make)...against the winner of the Beebles vs. you match...So tiebreakers don't matter yet.

Beebs, the more and more I think about it... I can kick myself for you atacking you. It is not my style to do so. I freaked out waiting for the impending damage that could possibly be in your hand (censoring out cards for secrecy), however, if I looked at it reality, I had the game under control. You were not going to attack the next turn, because I'd block and kill your 2/2 guy, leaving only one damage coming through (reminding you that I discarded three countering spells.) The following turn I ended up drawing into the Chainers, but I also held another creature (you know which one). I only needed one more card to have lethal damage available. I think I would have had you if I didn't get shaky kneed and was patient :) I think I have the momentum going into a potential rematch. I almost can't wait.

What does all the mumbo jumbo in the box mean? Referring to the standings attachment.

The first column, rank, is fairly self explanatory...don't worry about the second column, that's just the order he entered us into the program in. The third column, your name...is again fairly obvious. The next column, points, is the important one. Whoever has the most points wins. You get 3 for a match win, 0 for a match loss, 1 for a draw. Everything to the right of that is tiebreakers. The first breaker is Opponent Winning percentage. Basically, how strong are your opponents. Whoever plays the tougher set of opponents gets a better ranking than people who've played weaker opponents. The second number is you game winning percentage. Someone who's won more matches 2-0 will get a better ranking than someone who wins 2-1. The one after that is rarely relevant, but its opponents match winning percentage. Same thing, but it once again refers to opponent strength. The final column is basically your record...first number is matches played, second number is matches won, matches drawn, and byes awarded..in that order.

I hate to blame the guy, but I kind of feel like Tynion is avoiding the game so we get a draw (and I think if that happens we both get into top 4). He specifically told me he could play either 5am (no good), 5pm (he no-showed yesterday, and I couldn't today), or later around 9:30 pm (he no-showed yesterday and today). I know the guy has been pretty busy, so I don't know what to do about it.

Fu, just so you know, if we had not gotten that game in yesterday at 5, it would have never happened, as my buddy didn't leave last night until around midnight, so I would have no-showed you again.

In regards to the 30 pop-in thing, I have been telling the guys in the writers guild that for three years now, and guess what, they never do it. So maybe you were the victim of some old school payback. :P Either way... good luck in the finals. I would say I hope you get Beebs, but I don't think you have the stable draws to over power his speed. If I had to make a bold prediction (and maybe throw some negative karma at him :P) I'd say Beebs slides by undefeated and wins MDV Extended #1.

Here is my reasoning... I think he already beat the other three finalists. Having played three of the four finalists, I don't think Neo has the speed to win game 1 and his side felt very iffy at best against me, so I think they is probably the same against Beebs quickness. I think Fu might be able to win a game 1 with a good draw of discard, but I didn't feel threatened putting a Tog into play unprotected against him, so i don't think he can consistantly draw enough removal fast enough to hold Beebs at bay. I don't know what TH played, but Beebs just beat him 2-1, and I assume that they were being sportsman-like in saying the bad draws doomed him and not great side-tech on Beebs part.

That's an interesting deck, Tress. How did it hold up against graveyard hate? Were the chain of vapors enough?

It wasn't so bad, since I can also cast my threats, but Leyline of the Void is pure annoying.

Chain of Vapor was pretty good, but I think I'd rather have something mainboard to deal with Leylines, or have more threats that don't need the yard to be useful.

i'm playing the E-dragon but i don't drop it, waste of resources. too big of a target for too little gain. you can run 4 of those(can't spell the stupid thing's name), but you wouldn't be able to hit all my kill conditions. trust me NMR tried that and i laughed at him. :p

Out of all the people I faced, DBB was really the only one who had his way with me. FuDaWg got me too, but I blame bad draws for that one. Even when I had decent/good draws, DBB was the only one who really stopped me.

I think I was the only one who played Counterspells, so you would have had issues with me :D

Besides, I don't think you could have dealth with a Tog attacking, you'd most likely need to sacrifice all your stuff to get a gargadon in play just to block him (I ran Damnation, Chainers' Edict, and Tendrils as creature removal)

EDIT:

I was thinking about the meta, and what we learned, but then I think that we will have an issue with Extended Rotating before the next Extended Tournament. What I will say is that the key was definately the graveyard. Whether your were dabbling in it or attacking it. We had atleast one dredge deck make the finals, I was playing Tog, and I know two guys who played me directly attacked my graveyard, trying to render my Tog and Circular Logic ineffective. My main form of attack was Haunting Echoes. I'd let your blow your steam, countering what was harmful and Damnationing the other guys away, and then Echoes your library free of harm. So one thing I notice is that Attacking the graveyard is almost a must. Dredge makes so much sense with Life from the Loam, Bridge from Below, and the Swan / Black land combo. You pretty much need to be able to kill a graveyard, or at least pinpoint cards from the game.

Further on that point, killing a creature is almost pointess in this era. You must remove it from the game, or put it on the bottom of the library. Cards like the three white ones come to mind as stepping stones:

Crib Swap
Unmake
Condemn

This cards are great at keeping you in the game long term. Factor in Oblivion Ring and White really looks strong in the upcoming extended. Not to mention that we know that a lot of favorites will be returning in the new meta. Demigod of Revenge, Tarmogoyf,Eternal Witness and some of the new breed of noticeable from Standard: Reveliark, Greater Gargadon, etc.

I would not be the least bit surprised to see people running an extended version of Kithkin, as there are a lot of added things that extended has to offer.

Just a few random thoughts.

Stepping back from environment scheme of things and coming locally, pretty much for the entertainment factor, has anyone noticed a trend in certain players tastes for deck styles and arch-types? We have had plenty of games and matches take place to start to see tendancies of players. This is another thing you can use to help improve your game. If you can figure out who you think will be playing in the tournament, and then take a tally of what you believe you will see the most of, you can gear your game against that and do well going against the meta instead of going against the players. For example, instead of knowing that Kithkin and Merfok will be heavy, I can look and see that 5 out of eight players are going to be playing aggro, then I know that life gain and board sweepers will serve me well, and perhaps I go that route instead of trying to defend primarily against two decks and leaving myself vulnerable against everything else.
