A note for Alpha Strike, I realize i wasn't as clear as I should have been. When I said no life-loss stuff is allowed, I meant stuff that effects your life total. Effects like [card:34e9c125ed]Douse in Gloom[/card:34e9c125ed] are fine against opponents.

Sorry for not clarifying.

regarding the high-life format. What about mana-creatures like elves? for example:
You have [card:fac25863f2]llanowar elves[/card:fac25863f2] in play, and you tap it to play a 8cc creature, do you loose 8 life or 7life?

I don't think you pay for spells with mana in that game, just life points.

I like the article. I am a fan of big n' fat decks. I am scared of no restricted lists though. That has 4 Memory Jars written all over it.

*mind begins to wander... drool... 4 Balance... 4 Mind Twist... Timewalks, Twisters...*

Also, do lands count towards the points base of the first game state?

Oh and Black Vise... how could I forget him...? I need to go and look at the current restricted list..

Lands don't have a converted mana cost, so no, they don't have points.

oops, good catch. I forgot about the gain part. But I hope you get my drift on that one. Spells that lower the opponent's total are fine.

@Tynion: Remember, these are casual formats designed to be played by circles of friends. Each group can have its own banned/restricted list. Also, lands or anything with a 0CC casting cost (IE [card:0e5059fba5]Ornithopter[/card:0e5059fba5]) are 0 points.

Forgive the double-post, but a question has arrisen concerning High Life.
Add mana effect on critters, like L. Elves of BOP don't do anything.
You cannot add mana to your mana pool.

Sorry if there was any confusion.

Also, if there is anything about a format that you don't understand, feel free to post here and ask. When I write these, I try to think of everything, but more often than not I'll miss stuff. Its happened on this article a few times already. Remember, though, that as a playgroup, you can make up your own rules as you go along.

Thanks for reading my articles!

My circle of friends were vendictive. If we could pound with something fat we would, but more than likely, we wanted to lock everyone else at the table down. I can remember my buddy Patrick working feverishly on our multiplayer Browse deck, and playing moxen, lotus, duals, etc. He was Jester's Capping 3-4 people a turn. We played by the standard restricted banned list.

Although with my brother-in-laws, we had to customize it abit. Mulitani found her Fat A$$ on the restricted list. 6 mana for an 18/18 untargetable wasn't fair. We also instated a thing called the Wand of Wonder.

It was a list of 100 random magic card effects. You'd roll a percentage dice (2 ten sided) and read your results. We had to restrict its use though. It ended up costing half of your current life total, rounded up, and could only be used when someone would be "devestating you". Meaning, you were gonna die, you had board control and someone pops your control, you have 50 creatures in play and were setting up something and someone wraths, or something like that. It was always roll on the floor fun. Oh, and it was subject to a fair vote too. If someone felt that they could activate it, the others would vote on if it was a good enough reason, so it was not abused.

Custom rules are cool :)

Remember, you only get 2 spells a turn in this format.
