View Full Version : Pick the next tournament format

Alright guys, since the Standard tournament is going fairly well, and since there is no general consensus about what to play next, I figured I’d put it up to a poll. Vote once, and whatever has the most votes at the end will be what we play next. If there’s a constructed format you’re not familiar or comfortable with, I’ve got links to references for you. Also there are some notes for specific game types that need a little more explaining. Notes first, references second.
If you want something that isn't on the list, post in the thread. I could only make 10 options, so I couldn't make an exhaustive list of like 30 formats...
If there is a tie after voting, we’ll do a revote with only those tied as options.
Note #1 regarding cube sealed: The Cube we’d use is the “We make the Cube” from MTG Salvation. It’s a pretty solid cube, and is all spelled out for you to see ahead of time.
Note #2 regarding the Market Sealed: Because I think this format is best suited for 8 people max, if this is selected it will be run as pods. If possible they’ll be 8 person pods, but they’ll be set as close to each other as possible (IE if 14 people sign up it’ll be two pods of 7, not one of 8 and one of 6). Who gets put into which pod will be based on time zones. Once again, the cube will be We make the Cube from Sally. If Sha-Eve is selected it will be two packs of Shadowmoor and one of Eventide.
Note #3 regarding Bring your own Block: Ice Age block will be Ice-Alliances-Coldsnap
Note #4 regarding EDH: The legend rule will not apply to generals, meaning more than one player may play a specific general. This prevents the people who sign up late having to play bad generals and have almost guaranteed losses.

Sha-Eve-Rav-Gpt-Dis Sealed
My hobby store did a hybrid Ravnica/Guildpact/Dissenssion/Shadowmoor draft, and it was good times. With Eve in the format and all of the hybrid symbols in play again I think it would be an interesting sealed deck environment.
Legacy

Extended

Bring your own Block
BYOB is a variation on Block Constructed. You chose any block, Ice Age block through present, and build a block constructed deck from that block. Anything banned in that block’s block constructed list is also banned here (pretty much only Mirrodin has issues with that. No affinity for you). No core sets.
Make your own Standard
MYOS is similar to BYOB. You select two blocks and one core set (5th edition or later) and build your deck using only cards from those two blocks and core set. The blocks do not have to be contiguous to each other (you can have Ice age block and Lorwyn block together for example). More information here. I'm a big fan of sealed, and the hybrid sealed sounds cool. We'd have to go over how exactly to do sealed in MWS again, and I'll have to work on updating EVE into my MWS, but that's my vote.
The randomness makes things far more entertaining than constructed.

Im not very familiar with MWS, I have it but Ive never played a game on it, but I love Legacy. So I'm in for that.

Because the standard tournament is currently underway, the next tournament is being decided on then. Maybe the chicken isn't as smart as we thought. :paranoid:
I would do Cube Sealed, as it's different, and legacy is stupid. :D

I believe you're biased though, seeing we picked up the same choice ;)
To stay on topic, any format would be fine by me, but for the more "special" ones, like Highlander or the Make your own series, it'd be nice if they were announced some time in advance...
They're not easy formats to build a deck and I believe most people don't have one ready to fire...

If by bias, you mean my intentions are for the optimal choice in regards to the best idea from my perspective; which would be the most enjoyable choice, while keeping it fresh & new. :D
Why do people want legacy though? If you want to play legacy, you can have matches all the time. Except to have Cube Sealed, that takes more people. It isn't played one on one as much, because it's sealed, and when you play someone you usually want to play a deck you made from scratch, not sealed. That's just my thought.

Just to reitterate what Aladin said, please don't have the research necessary tournaments without advance notice, as there are people who want to play, but don't have readily available time to do the research. We would need a week or more just to see what the format entails and what works, plus build and test our decks... *rolls eyes at Legacy* Talk about needing time to build a deck...
More thinking...
You know what would be clever... You should schedule out say.. two months of tournaments. Then, you could get some of the guys in the writers guild to do write ups on the upcoming formats. This not only helps minimize the need of guys like me doing hours of research, but it also advertises the league/tournament, plus just simply generates ideas.
In all honesty, this is destined to be doomed if we don't get the main site involved sooner than later, as we need to advertise in order to grow.

Maybe Tynion's up to date, Extended wise :paranoid:
But, Legacy and Extended are really close formats (I believe), Legacy is simply a bit faster and there are good combo decks (which I doubt exist in Extended). Adapting from one to another isn't difficult, especially in the aggro-control field.
Otherwise,
I'll support the 2 months schedule. Discovering T2 was tough last time.
As for the Writers' Guild advertising the tournaments, that's a good idea... :o Although it would take somebody's time and probably not mine :o

You know me.. walking contradiction.. :P
The reason I voted for extended was that it had been talked about by LD and someone else publicly, so when this tourney started up and I could not modify my deck any further, I began working on two Extended builds, thus my research has already begun for that season, but not Legacy

I actually forgot all about that. I'm assuming most people would want to do it pre-rotation because my guess is that's what most people have decks built for.
NeoMagicwarrior
08-04-2008, 06:52 PM
pre-rotation is probably better just to create a happy medium between extended players and legacy players. Once the rotation hits...a good chunk of extended leaves and limits the card pool dramatically. Leaving the tour for pre-rotation allows for some extra cards and stuff that will be used as "appeasement" if we do wind up with extended.
My personal feelings on dual tours is as follows. 1 constructed and 1 limited at a time unless your getting some help lion. The tour is going smoothly...just a little slow, and if your running too many...it might increase the time and drive players away.

I played my tournament Legacy against some competetive (probably not tier 1, but close) Vintage decks and won about half the time. That being said at the side event at GP Indy I went 2-3. 2 Legitimate losses and 1 due to misplaying after time, I would've won the next turn but I was stupid and forgot why I was going to do what I was going to do so I did something else instead.

I already voted for the hybrid sealed, but for what it's worth I'd rather do Legacy than Extended. I have several legacy decks, but absolutely zero extended decks. It'd be a lot more work in the research dept. for me.

I guess there's no particular reason other than Lionden's choice... Legacy also happens to be more popular (I believe)...
I don't mind Vintage being polled, but it is nowhere the same game as Legacy, Extended or any other format.
Deckbuilding in Vintage is for Vintage experts only. And, even aside from that, playing well a Vintage deck is an impressive challenge. There's just so much power, so much draw, so many tutors...
Granted it's a skill test but...
... I'd rather have a 1 on 1 Cube sealed with Ryusaki :P

It takes more talent to make a Tier Vintage Deck. And with the Casualness of this Forum, It is less likely that anyone has the Skills required to pull off this feat. Before I get Blasted, This Is just a Generalization. If i'm wrong I am wrong. Just stating what I've seen
