Hi, I'm fairly new to magic and I have a question about epic cards. It says in the rules that you cannot play spells. Does that mean you can still play lands and activated abilities?

Yep. Land drops are fine. Activated abilities are fine.
So Flame Fusillade + Green Epic works well :)

That's cool. Cheers!

As long as you remember to play the Fusillade BEFORE the Epic. But yeah, you can play lands and activated abilities (and any other abilities will work too).

How about [card:e054dca7a8]Kaho,_Minamo_Historian[/card:e054dca7a8]'s ability? "X, T: You may play a card with converted mana cost X removed from the game with Kaho without paying its mana cost"

Is this just playing an activated ability, or playing an activated ability and then playing a spell? (in other words, will this work when you have an epic card in play?)

Edit: practising card tags

The key word is "play a card"

Epics say you can't play spells.

103.2. When a rule or effect says something can happen and another effect says it can’t, the “can’t” effect wins. For example, if one effect reads “You may play an additional land this turn” and another reads “You can’t play land cards this turn,” the effect that keeps you from playing lands wins out.

Kaho's activated ability says you "may" play certain cards. Epic says you "can't" play spells (this includes both spells that are cards and spells that aren't). Epic wins.

So, with epic in effect, you can play Kaho's activated ability just fine, but when it resolves it won't actually do anything.
