Full Contest Details found here (http://www.magicdeckvortex.com/mdvarticle0397.htm).

Contest Rules:

All entries must be posted on the forum in the designated thread.
All entries must be submitted by 5/18/2008
All entries must be based around one of missing entries from the above appendix. Designated by blank images.
Your card must be flavorful, but don't think that all the flavor is in a flavor text, or that a flavor text is even needed. These are legendary creatures and places from a defined era they should resemble as such.
Your card should be designed as if it is part of the Fallen Empires set. Naming, abilities, should be as such. Also, it should be easily recognizable as a Fallen Empires creature, thing or place. Don't worry about trying to match it as Summon X, do like a modern card, but it should reek of Fallen
Empires just like Thelon of Havenwood and Icatian Crier did.
Submit only ONE entry. All entries with more than ONE will be disqualified. If you need to edit your entry, edit the one you already submitted.
There will be a discussion thread in addition to the entry thread. The entry thread is for submissions and submissions alone.
Submit text card only! Don't attempt to card an entry.

Grading will be out 50 points:
/10 points Card Balance
/10 points Card Flavor (Set)
/10 points Card Flavor (Character/Locale)
/10 points Card Originality
/10 points Card Technical Aspects

Automatic Disqualifiers:

Plagiarized or duplicated work (as seen on other sites, copies of existing cards)
Multiple entries.
Carded entries.

Oliver Farrel 2WW
Legendary Creature - Human Cleric (R)
1W: Target blocked creature gets +1/+1 until end of turn.
Whenever a creature you control attacks and isn't blocked, you may have it deal X damage to target creature, where X is its power. If you do, that creature deals no combat damage this turn.
1/2

Taken from existing Farrelite cards. He used to be a Priest, hence the Clericness and pumping ability, and Farrelite Priest is 1/3. Since Oliver no longer is one and isn't a warrior, he's only a 1/2. The ability is taken from his Mantle and Zealot, and it fits his rebelliousness. Pretty simple, really. :(

Delif
1GG
Legendary Creature- Elf Cleric Druid
0/1
0: This turn, when target creature you control attacks and isn't blocked, you may prevent all damage that would be dealt to another target creature this turn. If you do, it deals no combat damage this turn.
"A beast's instinct to kill will never be as strong as its instinct to protect."- Delif, Ponderings

The two cards connected with Delif (Delif's Cone and Delif's Cube) show that his abilities related to stopping creatures from attacking them and getting them to heal, be it regeneration or life gain. Only one quote is attached to him: "Where is it written that beasts must cause pain?" —Delif, Ponderings (Delif's Cone) shows that he loved animals, thus the druid, and in Fallen Empires if you were a druid you were green, period. So he is green, not white, end of story. He seems very pacifistic so I gave him no attack, and he doesn't seem on to be too into defending your self outside of animals, so 1 defense. As a side rules note: If you use the ability after blockers are declared, it won't trigger at all. So you want to use it before blockers are declared. Also, this card has an activated ability that creates a triggered ability which watches the target creature. (stolen from the rules on his other two cards.)

An additional bonus:

Here's the card as it would appear in Fallen Empires:
Delif
1GG
Summon Elf
0/1
0: If target creature you control attacks and is not blocked, you may choose to prevent all damage to target creature. If you do so, it deals no damage to opponent this turn.
"A beast's instinct to kill will never be as strong as its instinct to protect."- Delif, Ponderings

General Khurzog 3R
Legendary Creature - Orc Warrior
General Khurzog cannot block creatures with power 3 or greater.
RR, Sacrifice an untapped Orc or Goblin: General Khurzog deals damage equal to the sacrificed creature's power to target attacking creature.
3/3

"Orcish officers were tireless in battle, moving up and down the lines to put their own men between themselves and the enemy." —Sarpadian Empires, vol. IV

I wanted Khurzog to be a little bigger and braver than his followers, but only a little. I used the "cannot block" effect present on other orc creatures to give a sense of continuity, as it seems to be a racial trait in orcs. I felt that the sacrifice ability fitted in well mechanically, as there was a lot of sacrifice abilities in the Empires set. This was partly common due to Thallids and Thrulls, but I still felt it wouldn't seems out of place in the set, as the ability works with the flavour of the card, as well as filling the mechanical gap in the lack of orcish defence (in a rather "red" manner), something I felt it quite fitting for a legend to do.

note: the flavour text is an intentional mirror to Dwarven Lieutenant

Jherana Rure, Counter-Insurgency Commander - 2B
Legendary Creature - Cleric Knight
As Jherana Rure, Counter-Insurgency Commander comes into play, choose a creature type.
Creatures of the chosen type get -2/-1.
2/2
"As long as I live, Thrulls WILL know their place."

I don't know much about Jherana or the Ebon Hand other than what I read in Cashew's articles. So I presume the Counter-Insurgency already existed to ward off any possible threat, and wasn't just created to fend off the Thrulls. Bummer if I'm wrong.

Also, gatherer tells me Ebon hand people aren't exactly humans, as they don't have the Human type. Hence why Jherana doesn't have either, having instead Order of the Ebon Hand's subtypes. Bummer again if she's not a knight. Or a cleric...

In the Appendix, Cashew says "Unfortunately, its hard to kill something that's already been dead," hence why Jherana simply gives them -2/-1 and doesn't outright kill them. Most Thrulls have toughness greater than one anyway.

And finnaly, the flavor text reads "As long as I live," which is a reference to her being killed by a Necrite, which ended the counterinsurgency.

Cave-Stormer - RR
Creature - Thrull
R: Cave-Stormer gains First Strike until end of turn.
3: Cave-Stormer gets +3/+0 until end of turn. At end of turn, if RRR or more has been spent this way, sacrifice Cave-Stormer.
The child of thrull malice, orcish corpses, and razor blades.
1/1

When I read the description, I realized I had to make a cave-stormer. It proved deceptively difficult.... thrulls were bred to die, but they themselves bred this one to kill.... I had to look through fallen empires red and black for abilities that seemed accurate. Some may say that thrulls aren't red, but I don't see why they couldn't be. These thrulls created it to flush out mountains, why not use red mana in it's creation? It may have been multicolored, but there weren't any gold cards in fallen empires.

I gave it only 1 power so that those cowardly orcs could block it, and made sure it could kill any orc foolish enough to. The second ability is kind of tricky, allowing the cave stormer to do a lot of damage, but dangerously in a red heavy deck (it counts all uses of the ability during the turn, if that's not clear). A fast, slightly suicidal, killing machine? I think I've hit the mark.

(P.S.- Cashew, Empress Galina is listed there, but she already has her own card (http://ww2.wizards.com/gatherer/CardDetails.aspx?&id=23007). Unless that version doesn't count because it came later.)

Marshall Karel Volnikov 2UUU
Legendary Creature-Merefolk Soldier
Protection from Homarids
3U, Tap: Tap all creatures you control. They gain Protection from Homarids until end of turn.
2/3
"We are the abandoned. Abandoned by our queen, our friends, and our loved ones. But that does not mean we die without a fight.
-Marshall Karel Volnikov, last words

The protection from Homarids is from their desperate attempts to drive out the invaders but in the end they did not have the numbers (blockers) that the homarids did so they lost the battle.
The reason for the tapping of all creatures you control, is that during the Fallen Empires block, blue had good cards and early versions that had shroud, but in order to achive an effect out of all creatures, ability, or just pump they had to tap creatures you control.
