what will happen if I have an [card:85681f1c70]oppression[/card:85681f1c70] in play and I cast a [card:85681f1c70]yawgmoth's will[/card:85681f1c70]?
-Do i still have to discard from the oppression even though I don't have a hand? The "will" say "play cards in your graveyard as though they were in you hand." But it is still your graveyard so i say I don't have to discard a card. I could use some help on the delema. Thanks.

Well, there's no such thing as "play spells as if they were in your hand" now.

You play them, but they're never in your hand. When you play from your graveyard, you'll discard a card if you have a card in your hand, and if you don't, Oppression does nothing.

Yep.

This is from the gatherer rulings:

Oct 4, 2004 - If you play a card using Yawgmoth's Will and something triggers only when "played from your hand", that something will not trigger. Such things trigger based on where the card came from.

Those are old rules. As Ultima said, "played from your hand" isn't used any more.

Well, the "as though ... in your hand" wording isn't used anymore, but the "played it from your hand" wording is; see [card:d7a701c50f]Furnace Dragon[/card:d7a701c50f] and [card:d7a701c50f]Cloud of Faeries[/card:d7a701c50f] (oracle text), for example.

The thing is, Oppression doesn't care where you played the spell from, so the ruling lionden_56 quoted, while accurate, is irrelevant to the origonal question.

Oops, sorry. I read the question wrong.

It'll work as though you were playing the cards normally...

Say [card:8e9251e498]Yawgmoth's Will[/card:8e9251e498] is in effect and [card:8e9251e498]Oppression[/card:8e9251e498] is in play.

Then you play a card from your graveyard. Say it isn't a land, so it goes on the stack as a spell. Since you played the spell, this triggers Oppression.

When Oppression's triggered ability resolves, you must discard a card from your hand. If you have no cards in your hand, this has no effect (it doesn't matter if you have cards in your graveyard or not). If you do discard a card, it is removed from the game by the Will's replacement ability.
