Deckbuilding Contest: Class-Wars!
1/25/08 - About two years ago Streetz ran a class-based contest designed to use a limited pool of Tribal based around the D&D style classes. I speak of this only because Morningtide brings us to an interesting crossroad; while it focuses heavily on the tribal lines created by Lorwyn, it also is the first set to really ever focus on the class aspect of creatures. As a result you're seeing numerous Faerie Rogues, Goblin Warriors, and others all designed along the tribal lines created by Lorwyn and the class lines being defined in Morningtide. Which brings me to the contest... ~Cashew~ Enter Here.
Planeswalker Contest Announcement.
10/22/07 - The journey to this contest actually began a couple months ago. A goofy little card called Tarmogoyf was released in Future Sight. A single, simple little word included in the reminder text unleashed the largest rumor mill Magic has probably ever seen. It couldn't have been any smaller - just the inclusion of the word "planeswalker" as a card type – and the world began to spin faster.  ~Cashew~ Entries Here.  Discuss Here.
MOMP Challenge #1: Sheltered Valley!
3/4/07 - MOMP challenges you all to create a deck making full use of the Alliance's land card, Sheltered Valley.  Click on the above link to read more about this.  This contest will not be formally judged.  ~Chris Newton~ Enter Here.
Thematic Landscaping: Decks due 1/16/07!
1/12/07 - This is just a friendly reminder that Thematic Landscaping, the current MDV deckbuilding contest, has a deadline and that deadline is this upcoming Wednesday.  Remember your deck has to be LAND THEMED... not just a land-based combo deck.  Read up on the rules here.  Be sure to include your name, the deck name and a short description of the deck!  Thanks for visiting Magic Deck Vortex!  ~Streetz~
Deck Contest: Thematic Landscaping.
1/2/07 - Welcome to MDV’s first deckbuilding contest of 2007! This time around the usual restrictions will apply but the focus will be completely different than all others before it. Entries are due by the end of 1/16/07 and need to be submitted via email to here. Your task: Create a land-themed deck with at least 28 lands. Read more about it here.  Thanks for visiting!   ~Streetz~
Happy Halloween!!! ...and a Deck Contest???
10/31/06 - Well, it's Halloween, kiddies!  And it's time to start building.  While some of you are going to go trick-or-treating around town, I know there are others of you that are, well, a bit too old to trick-or-treat.  And thus, BUILD A DECK!  This isn't a formal contest, but it's a contest to build the most intriguing Halloween themed deck.  Whether you are focusing on Witches, Dark Spells, Dark Cats, Candy, Jack-o-Lanterns, Werewolves, Ghosts, or anything else related to Halloween, make a deck out of it and post it in this forum thread.  MDV Staff will review the submissions and crown the top three decks with a place in the MDV Deck Database.  All decks are due by the end of the day.  Please check out the forum thread on this for more details.  Thanks for visiting.  ~Streetz~

MDV IDOL 2: Voting Polls Open!!!
9/4/06 - Welcome fans to the MDV Reader Voting portion of MDV Idol 2: In the Crossfire!  During the last seasons voting session, we grouped all the entries by the order of entry into the contest.  This time, we decided that we would have the grouping done by randomly pairing all the contestants in groups, instead of just having the order of entry decide the pairing. So I have taken the liberty and have randomly placed each contestant into Groups A through E. Voting threads are located here.  ~Chris Newton~

Must Have Theme Contest Wrap-up!
8/4/06 - Some time ago, back in 2003, I posted a deckbuilding contest called “Must Have Theme.” In this contest I challenged visitors of MDV to create a tribal theme deck. The deck had to involvea creature type that I didn’t have in the Deck Database at the time. Since then, MDV’s deck database has grown significantly and I can’t really compare these decks to the Database anymore. However, I thought it would be fun to re-visit this contest and proclaim a winner. Read on! Discuss this article here.  ~Streetz~

MDV Idol: Voting Starts Now!
7/11/06 -The original plan was to have you vote for one card and the top five vote getting cards would be sent to the Judges for the final round, in which a winner would be selected. However, with the extra large number of entrants, I have decided to break the cards down, into five groups. The card in each group that gets the most votes, will go on to the finals. The groups will consist of three groups of nine, and two groups of eight.  ~Chris Newton~

MDV IDOL: Bestest Broken Card Contest!
6/23/06 - Over the years, players have abused Magic cards created by Wizards, originally intended to be good or average cards, until Wizards were forced to restrict them. (Such as Necropotence, Land Tax, and the Wishes.) There were times in the past, however, when cards were just simply broken from the moment that they left the printer. I feel this art should stimulate some interesting concepts.  Note about it - the original card proposed using this art was denied by the designers of Powershift.  Remember, the judges are looking for originality, balance and something that flavorfully fits the art.  Good luck.  Click here to join (or post in) the contest; thanks for visiting MDV!  ~Streetz~

Celixia Files: Tournament Worthy?
12/16/05 -  Welcome back to Celixia Files! This time around I hope to enlighten you all, especially those that are going to be in the Winter Break Tournament, on certain Celixia  cards and combos to watch out for. While I won't be featuring 'combos' like in the combo section of MDV, there will be hints scattered throughout the article.  First up in today's Celixia Files is a top ten list for Celixia cards. This is really just for fun but I give you a little more info on each card as I go along.  Some of you may disagree if you know anything about Celixia, but here I go.  You can discuss this article in the forums here. ~Streetz~

Winter Break Celixia Tournament!!!
12/17/05 - Note: Decks are due by 12/18.  I have extended this date to help the players out there with finals this week...  Join the Celixia Block Constructed tournament to take place over the Winter Break later this month.  I am currently taking sign-ups in the forum thread found here.  I will be hosting the tournament although I may play in it as well.  Some things to note:

  • We will be using MWS to do the tournament.
  • You should be a member of the MDV forum.
  • Email your decklist and your decklist code to streetz@magicdeckvortex.com by 12/18.
  • You can view the CELIXIA visual-text spoiler here.
  • You can download MWS here.
  • You can find out more information about getting CELIXIA into your MWS here (along with information about the tournament).
  • The games will start on 12/19 (or around there).
  • The winner will get to design a cycle of uncommon or common cards for one of the next two sets in the Celixia Block (Celixia, Powershift, Equilibrium).  There must be at least 12 people signed up for this to happen.

There will be a few articles before the tournament deck due date to help you build your deck.  You may want to check out Celixia 101, Celixia Files I, Celixia Files II and Celixia 101.2 for starters.  There are already 19 people signed-up!!!  I encourage you all to sign-up and test your skills with a new (not so real but fun) magic set called CELIXIA!!!.  Thanks for visiting MDV! ~Streetz~

Round 2 - Create a Christmas Card Contest.
11/24/05 - Round one is now over.  There were quite a few cool entries.  The judges have made their marks and the winner of round one will be announced shortly.  In the meantime, round two has begun.  Your mission this time is to creature an artifact or artifact creature with the subtype - ornament.  You must include with your submission a LINK to a picture of the art you want on your card.  Challenging?  Not really... there are plenty of strange and cool ornaments pics on the net to find.  You can post more than one card but if you do, make note which card you want scored. Enjoy, enter, and have fun!  Note: You can join the contest at any time - some of these cards will be featured on MDV next month.  ~Streetz~
Create a Christmas Theme Card Contest v2.0!
11/10/05 - A long time ago, I hosted a card creation contest on the Wizard's forums for creating Christmas theme cards. I have finally decided to dredge the contest back into existence (I had plenty of cards in my library to do so)... and so... I present to you, Streetz’s Christmas Them Card Creation Contest V2.0!!! Your mission is to design a card that has something to do with Christmas, whether it be a crazy present, Santa Claus, a Christmas tree or whatever... it could be a movie character... it could be a candy cane. Make it fun. Make it cool. NO CARD IMAGES. If you have an idea for a picture, link to it, DO NOT POST THE CARD IMAGE. You will judges out of 10 for originality, humor, and functionality. Enjoy, enter, and have fun! ~Streetz~
Original artwork contest.
10/10/05 - Can you draw?  If you can, you may want to join lionden's Artwork contest in the forums (linked here).  There he will give you instructions on drawing something... and all you have to do is submit it.  Make sure to post in that thread that you want in on the contest.  After the contest is over, your artwork will be posted on the main page of Magic Deck Vortex!  Thanks for visiting MDV.  ~Streetz~

Now we are onto Round 3.  Round 3 is all about creating a zero casting cost artifact.  There are a few restrictions like it can't produce mana.. but aside from all of that you should enter.  Your entry could be a card in Powershift.   Plus, you can enter the contest at any time.. so if you haven't signed up.. sign up now!  Quite a few forum members have already started posting their submissions for the Round 3.  Thanks for visiting MDV! ~Streetz~
Round 2: Create an Artifact card contest!
9/14/05 - Join the forum contest (linked above) of creating an artifact card.  Round One is over and the winner will be declared, but round two is now in session.  In this round you need to: "
Create an Artifact Creature (that isn't an Orb) that is big with a drawback. Make the drawback as original as possible. The casting cast must be between 6 and 13."  Notes: No Orbs. No Dax. Colossus/Golems are OK. You might be better, flavor wise, to not give it a creature type.. although you won't lose any points if you do. When I say Big I mean 6/6, 7/7, 8/8 - 12/12 or higher (2/20 works, 20/3 works) Whatever, make it big and fantastic but costed right with a draw back."  Please join in the fun.  Many people have already started posting their submissions for the contest.  Thanks for visiting MDV! ~Streetz~
CELIXIA (forum) Contest - create a card!

If you haven't joined the forums and want an opportunity to design a card for one of the sets in the fictional CELIXIA block, now's your chance. Enjoy and good luck! Powershift Contest Over, Winner Declared.
5/30/05.  There has been a contest running in the MDV/MTP forums for Powershift, the next set in the fictional CELIXIA block.  The contest involved creating a new mechanic for Powershift, and let me say there were some nifty mechanics submitted from the submitters.  It is finally complete, and of the many contestants in the contest, Hymnologist has won with his "Duplicate" mechanic.  Soaring Estos is a card he created that shows the mechanic.  Please click on the above link to find out more and to see the Powershift card in it's early stages.  Thanks for visiting MDV.  ~Streetz~
