Maelstrom Djinn - Otherworldly Journey. |
|
  |
Here's another combo from Christian K. along with the
description he submitted with it. "Morph the Djinn and enjoy the
5/6 flier. Then eliminate the hassle of Vanishing by sending him on an
Otherworldly Journey. When he comes back, it's without Vanishing or
Vanishing counters, and instead...he's a 6/7 flier with no drawbacks!
You can also use Momentary Blink, Turn to Mist, or Mistmeadow Witch to
achieve the same effect, but I prefer the +1/+1 counter." |

Sleeper Agent - Wall of Souls |
|
  |
Today's combo was submitted by Christian K and he has a
few more cards to suggest with these two. Here's what he had to
say about these two cards: "Throw them both down on turn one with a Dark
Ritual and your opponent has 10 turns to live. If they try to attack
with the Sleeper Agent, block with the Wall of Souls and deal them an
additional 3 damage without losing anything! Throw in Pillory of the
Sleepless and you're dealing 3 damage a turn without breaking a sweat." |

Stoic Angel - Trip Noose or other tapping
cards... |
|
  |
Assuming you play Stoic Angel after your opponent all out
attacks, you should be able to fend off one creature a turn for the rest
of the game with relative ease. Since your opponent will only be
able to untap one creature per round. that is. However, if you
want to make it a little more difficult for you opponent to get just one
creature through for some combat damage, combo the Angel up with cards
like Trip Noose or Icy Manipulator. They untap one creature... you
tap it. This Shards combo was submitted by YWN. Thanks! |

Tezzeret the Seeker - Mycosynth Lattice |
|
  |
This combo was submitted by YWN. While Mycosynth
Lattice is likely to combo with the majority of the cards from the Esper
shard, it is particularly nice with Tezzeret the Seeker. His first
ability will give you the ability to untap any two permanents you
control while Lattice is in play. Mind you this is particularly
useful with lands and mana producing creatures. His third ability
will turn every permanent you control into a 5/5 artifact creature until
end of turn. Combine with something that gives all of your
creatures trample or flying and you have a winning combo. Anyone
else think the metallic bodies are kind of creepy? Thanks for
submitting the combo, YWN! You too can submit a Shards of Alara
combo
here. |

Preacher - Diamond Valley |
|
  |
This combo is an oldie and a goodie. Tap the
Preacher to gain control of an opponent's creature (they get to
choose...) and then once it is spent, feed it to the treacherous and yet
rewarding Diamond Valley for some extra life. This is another
combo that was submitted by Mike Bell. Thanks, Mike!
Note: Both of these cards can be replaced with one of many. |

Primal Forcemage - Militia's Pride |
|
  |
Make that one mana you would pay to activiate Militia's
Pride go a little farther. If you have Primal Forcemage, each time
your Militia's Pride enchantment generates an attacking creature, it
will not be a 4/4 instead of the measly 1/1 the Pride would normally
create. While this is more synergy than combo, this is still a
great two-card punch that can in cases win you the game. Today's
combo was submitted by Mike Bell. |

Boros Swiftblade - Empyrial Armor |
|
  |
This is another combo submitted by Mike Bell. While
this is more synergy than anything else, enchanting a Boros Swiftblade
with the Empyrial Armor can win games pretty quickly. If you have
four cards in hand, the Boros is a 5/6 creature that swings for 10.
Really, Empyrial Armor works real well with any creature with double
strike. Obviously, the easier the creature is to cast, the better
suited it is for the Armor. Thanks for the combo, Mike. |

Living Plane - The Tabernacle of Pendrell Vale |
|
  |
Today's combo of the day was submitted by Mike Bell.
You may be seeing more of his combos throughout this week as he
submitted a whole bunch of them! This combo is one you have to
work your deck around (with lands that tap for more than one mana and/or
mana artifacts and mana creatures). Assuming you can deal with the
Tabernacle yourself, you can assume your opponent will not be able to.
For each land they have, they will have to tap a land to keep it in
play. And thus, you have created a lockdown for your opponent. Note that
Living Plane can be replaced with one of several land animators.
Thanks for the combo, Mike. |

Devoted Druid - Presence of Gond - Coat of Arms
[Infinite Creatures] |
|
   |
Infinite creatures is always fun although I think some of
the older infinite creature combos are getting old. If you are
looking for a new way to generate them, try these three cards out.
How it works: Enchant the Devoted Druid with the Presence of Gond and
tap it to generate an Elf Token. Devoted Druid gets a bonus of
+1/+1 because its creature type (Elf) matches the token you created.
So its a 1/3. Use its own ability to untap itself and put a -1/-1
counter on it. The Druid is back to 0/2. Ladies and
gentlemen, we are right back where we started. Repeat this
infinitely and you get infinite creatures.
This combo was submitted by Kyle from Los Angeles, CA.
Thanks, Kyle! |

Heartless Hidetsugu - Overblaze. |
|
 |
This combo was submitted by N. Noonan to me via email.
Thanks! When Furnace of Rath doesn't work for you with Heartless
Hidetsugu, go for the surprise route. Use Overblaze. As an
instant, you can play Overblaze on the Heartless Ogre and then respond
with Overblaze. When the Ogre deals its half damage to an
opponent, Overblaze's effect will double it and your opponent will lose
the game. This here is a winning combo. If you like red, I
would encourage you to give this combo a try. You should be able
to get both cards relatively inexpensively... Thanks again, N.
Noonan, for the combo! |

Planar Portal - Elemental Resonance |
|
  |
Today's combo of the day was submitted just yesterday by
TheGrayOne, an MDV forum regular. Thank you!!! If you enchant Planar
Portal with the Resonance card, you basically get a free tutor every
turn. This is a combo you can feasibly work into any deck as long as
green is one of the colors in it. The question is whether or not you
want to sacrifice the slots. I'll let that be your choice. In the
meantime, thank you TGO! |

Cauldron Haze - Cowardice |
|
  |
Today's combo falls in line with the deck of the day as
this combo can be seen in that deck list. Cauldron of Haze,
similar to Sway of Illusion, can target any number of creatures.
If you have Cowardice in play, each creature you target with Cauldron
Haze will be returned to its owner's hand. This is a great way to
clear the board and make way for your creatures that have extra
abilities when they strike an opponent. One card that comes to
mind is Fungal Shambler, although you won't find that card in today's
deck of the day. |

Stuffy Doll - Guilty Conscience. |
|
  |
Is Monday the official Stuffy Doll day? No, I just
wanted to follow up with a better combo than last week's Stuffy Doll
combo. This was submitted by a google of people including:
tygrr84, M. Tassinari , Defiant Elements, E. Stalbaum and J. Cooper (and
perhaps a few more that I missed in the forums). Thank you to
everyone who submitted this and other combos via email.
Enchant the Doll with Guilty Conscience and tap the Doll
to deal a damage to itself. This will create an loop of damage to
your opponent opponent. All for one mana and a tap. Who
needs Pariah or Pariah's Shield when you have this card? |

Tornado - Power Conduit. |
|
  |
"I
see this combo as, 2G to destroy target permanent and give your Yotian
Soldier a +1/+1 counter each turn. Since the counters on Tornado
(from cumulative upkeep) are age counters, you can still transform them
into charge or +1/+1 counters for your permanents. This keeps your
cumulative upkeep at a minimum, thus keeping the card in play longer,
and keeps your opponent's side of the board under check from
overpowering you. Reminds me of Desert Storm.. what a great card.
it was uncommon back in the day when I started playing." --2003

Magus
of the Coffers - Sword of the Paruns |
|
  |
"Infinite
Mana... and here's how it works: Equip Magus of the Coffers with Sword of
the Paruns. You must have at least six Swamps in play. (If
this proves difficult, add Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth to the mix).
Anyway, pay two to tap and use Magus of the Coffer's ability. Add
BBBBBB to your mana pool. Now pay three mana via the Sword to untap
Magus. BBB left. Pay BB to tap Magus to add BBBBBB to your
mana pool. Repeat for infinite mana. This combo was submitted

Geth's Grimoire - Mindslicer. |
|
  |
Mindslicer is great at emptying hands including your own
when he goes to the graveyard. You could wait until you are
card-less to sacrifice the Mindslicer (with another card) or you have a
Geth's Grimoire in play when he goes to the graveyard. With the
Grimoire in play, you will draw a card for each card your opponent
discarded to the Mindslicer's ability. And thus, you could
potentially end up with more cards in hand than your started with before
the Mindslicer hit the graveyard. This combo was submitted a
while back by Rui S. |

Leveler - Beacon of Tomorrow. |
|
  |
Infinite turns has never been easier. You might
have to sacrifice your entire library, but that's a small sacrifice to
make to completely annihilate your opponents by pinging them to death
with Timmy for 20 turns. Or you could attack with Leveler and wipe
them out in two. Whatever suits your fancy. How does this
work? Well, first you are going to need a lot of mana.
Thirteen to be precise. More never hurts. Play Leveler and
remove your library from the game. Make sure to have Beacon of
Tomorrows in your hand. Next, play Beacon of Tomorrows and take an
extra turn. The Beacon will shuffle back into your library and
provide you with a card to draw (so you don't lose the game).
Every turn from this point on you will play the Beacon and your will
ultimately win... This combo was submitted by

Binding Agony - Pariah's Shield - Stuffy Doll. |
|
   |
Binding Agony is really just an addition to an already
mean combo. Without Binding Agony, Shield and Doll can bleed your
opponent until they either die or concede (or manage to destroy one of
the two cards). They can't attach you. They can't burn you.
All they can do is hope to draw an answer.
Now enter Binding Agony. All you have to do it tap a
painland or really just the Doll itself. This one damage will be
redirected to the Doll will which activate the Agony and create an loop
of damage that will eventually kill your opponent. Be sure and
have a way to end the loop or else no one wins...
This combo was submitted by arcane2k a long, long time
ago. Thanks for the combo! |

Submit a Week Worth of Combos to be featured
right here! |
|
   |
Have you ever wanted to submit a combo to MDV? Or
better yet, submit a bunch of combos to MDV and have them all featured
on the site? Now is your chance! I am taking submissions right now
for themed and unthemed combo submissions. Please email them to
streetz@magicdeckvortex.com. Members of the site will have the
opportunity to guess your theme, if you theme it, and if they don't
guess it I will run another week of combos from you. Please
remember to write a paragraph description for each combo. Please
email me with any questions. P.S. Sorry for not
posting any combos this week. Been busy. |

Kami of Old Stone - Doran, the Siege Tower. |
|
  |
I know, I know... this isn't COMBO. It's synergy.
But synergy is still good. Kami of the Old Stone is a card
originally from the Kamigawa Block that works surprising well with
Doran. With both cards in play, Kami of Old Stone is like a 7/7
for only four mana. Suddenly this over-protective spirit has a
chance to shine as a game winner! Possibly... |

Army Ants - Crucible of Worlds |
|
  |
If you are still in possession of an old Mirage Block
land destruction deck packing Army Ants, I would encourage you to
revisit it and add in a few Crucible of Worlds. This two card
combo will eat away at your opponent's land base as long as you can keep
both the Ants and the Crucible in play. Whenever you tap the Ants
to destroy an opponent's land, you have to sacrifice one of your own.
Crucible of Worlds will let you replay that land over and over again.
This way you stay steady with your mana base while your opponent loses a
land a turn. |

Umbilicus
- Second Chance - Monk Idealist |
|
   |
Many apologies for missing Monday and Tuesday's Combos of
the day. In an effort to make up for the two days loss, I will
give you an infinite Turn combo. This way it will feel like we
never lost anything. This combo is from MDV's Infinite Turn Combo
Catacombs found
here. To quote the original
description:
...this one was submitted by Alvaro Toledo. You have to have 5 or less life to make this one work.
Have all three cards in play. During your upkeep the Second Chance will activate since your have 5 or less life.
Use the Umbilicus to return the Monk to your hand. Then cast it during
your main phase and bring the Second Chance from your graveyard to your hand.
Cast it. Now the cycle can be repeated during your extra turn from
Second Chance and thus you can get "infinite" turns...

Aether Rift - Pitchstone Wall |
|
  |
This is really more synergy than combo. However, it
is efficient. You can stack your deck all day with creatures to
accommodate the Aether Rift enchantment from Invasion. However,
you are still going to need a few non-creature spells in the deck to
make it work. You can always use Madness spells in your deck, but
if you want to use something that can't be played when discarded and
don't want to risk losing it to the Rift, try Pitchstone Wall from
Torment. Not only does it make an efficient 2/5 wall blocker, but
it can sacrifice itself to prevent a card from being discarded.
Almost like a double-edged sword...? ... nevermind... |
