Casual in most cases is just Type 1, sometimes
without the power. The degree of difficulty is remotely the same, yet
the metagame goes from 20 decks to an infinite amount of possibilities.
This is the format where the Type 1 pretenders are first class. The
format where Elves are playable. The format where the idea of combo is
some 4-6 cards strung together, making you go infinite in the weirdest
ways.
Lately, one card has come out from Champions of Kamigawa
that catches my eye. The legends this set brought were original and
appealing to casual players everywhere. The one I’m referring to would the
Clouded Mirror himself, Meloku. In my last article, I decided to throw a
little combo in around Meloku, a three card combo consisting of Fastbond,
Meloku, and Plunge into Darkness. By bouncing a land back into your hand
to put a Spirit token into play, you can create around 10 tokens (assuming
you are at 20) and then Plunge into Darkness, raising your life back at
40. You could even make another 20 and do it again. Even if the Plunge is
countered, you still have 10 tokens to work with.
The first idea that came into mind was the old Turboland
decks of a couple of years ago. What ever happened to them? Gush’s
restriction pretty much killed the deck, as it was dependent on that free
draw. Many have attempted to play variations of it since Crucible of
Worlds came out, but most of those decks have been proven bad in the
format. Regardless, it still makes a fun concept for casual.
