 Izzet
Dead Yet?
Description of deck by it's author
(quoted):
Well, I haven’t had the time to test new decks
like I usually do, but I have been working on a deck ever since Izzet
Guildmage was previewed. That deck, of course, is Izzet Combo. The basic
premise behind the deck originally was to get out Izzet Guildmage with
enough mana open to play Lava Spike and splice on Desperate Ritual then
copy it with Izzet Guildmage’s ability and go for infinite damage. The
problem that I found with the deck was that it was not that consistent
and didn’t have an alternate game plan beyond the Guildmage, so I waited
as more spoiler information came out. During this same time period, I
was working on a deck to abuse all the Izzet cards that triggered off of
sorceries and instants being played. The focus of this deck was abusing
Wee Dragonauts. Once again, I found that the deck was not terribly
consistent and had some weaknesses.
Eventually, I decided to combine the two decks. There were two problems,
though: I could not keep drawing enough instants or sorceries to make
Wee Dragonauts consistently effective and I was still having issues with
Guildmage.
That is when it hit me. How to you keep spells in your hand while still
playing out a bunch of spells? The answer I found was arcane spells. U/R
arcane spells work very well together, and with the mana producing power
of Desperate Ritual, I found that I was able to play 3-4 spells a turn
rather consistently by playing something, splicing Desperate Ritual,
playing another spell off of the mana, splicing Desperate Ritual, and so
on and so forth. Because I was running arcane spells I was also able to
incorporate the Izzet Guildmage combo into the deck.
The creature base is pretty simple. Izzet Guildmage is your combo kill
and he doesn’t do too bad of a job copying spliced spells, especially if
it involves two Glacial Rays or Glacial Ray and a Lava Spike. Wee
Dragonauts is essentially another combo. Depending on your hand, they
usually swing for around 7-11 damage, particularly if Desperate Ritual
is involved. That is usually enough with all the burn in the deck.
The spells are all based around three core ideas: doing damage, finding
Desperate Ritual, and splicing. Most of the cards are pretty straight
forward from that standpoint. Hidetsugu’s Second Rite is in there for
the surprise win. Overblaze is extremely powerful if it is the last
spell you play as you are going in with Wee Dragonauts. Char is a key
spell that was included because it can use extra mana from Desperate
Ritual and it can take out a lot of the key creatures in today’s
metagame.
