Description of deck by it's author
(quoted):
The main thematic problem I see with the deck is the presence of
actual non-land permanents. I think that Odyssey Block will grandfather
Mirari's Wake and Solitary Confinement into Standard (quite possibly
with Mobilization kill), and that many decks will have no choice but to
either start artifact and enchantment destruction, or be able to Cunning
Wish for these sorts of cards. Against at least some opponents, this
will potentially generate the kind of dead card advantage that Mike
Donais enjoyed in 1997-1998, even if creatures cards are required.
Call of the Herd seems like a good solution to Wild Mongrel to me. He
soaks up a lot of damage and will often pull a couple of cards out of
the opponent's hand. With Donais's original disdain for his early game
green blocker, we don't care if Call of the Herd dies... he almost
always sets up a better Wrath of God. Against other control decks, Call
is obviously quite good, allowing the D4C 2002 deck to play
aggro-control for a few turns or make the opponent use "real" cards on
its own incidentals.
I'm not sure if Possessed Aven is the right choice in terms of a
Morphling substitute. I originally tried Quicksilver Dragon, but
Possessed Aven is two mana cheaper and still has 80% of the punch. At
the same time, he can block with Wonder in the opponent's graveyard much
more quickly, and, at threshold, manhandles two of the three best
creatures in Standard (Merfolk Looter and Psychatog), at least until we
figure out which Onslaught creatures take the opening left by
Flametongue Kavu. Possessed Aven also helps to justify the black portion
of the deck. On the other hand, it might just be better to run Nantuko
Monastery. Unlike the Wake decks, D4C 2002 can run Nantuko Monastery and
not mana burn every turn. It is an efficient attacker, an efficient
blocker, and completely immune to permission. It even taps for mana the
turn it comes into play! On the downside, the mana it produces is
colorless, and the deck, as it stands, is four colors.
