WIZARDRY 2002: Emerald Wizardry

12/1/02.  All entries for the WIZARDRY 2002 deck building contest have been reviewed and you should know the top two decks were less than a point away from each other (0.2 to be exact).  The winner is  Emerald Knight with his deck called Emerald Wizardry.  The contest was difficult to judge as there are many ways to facilitate the wizards given control, control and control.  Unfortunately there were only 5 total entries so I will take this opportunity to post all five.  I think for future contests I will post the top five to give you the reader the opportunity to see what I had to pick from.  The scores all ranged from 21/25 to 16/25.  The last place deck scored so low because of major penalties.

For those that have not read the guidelines for the contest, let me go over them once more.  For the most part, the guidelines were very easy to follow.

What were the guidelines for entering the contest?

  • The deck cannot be more than 60 cards and not less than 60 cards.

  • Use cards from any set and the theme must be WIZARDS.

  • Just because it is a WIZARDS theme deck doesn't mean you can't use other supporting
creatures.  For instance, you could use the Mistform creatures and turn them into Wizards.
To be more technical, at least 4 of the individual card selections must say wizards in them.

  • You deck must have at least two legendary cards.

  • You can use any assortment of colors.  As mentioned above, I strongly encourage you to go
    beyond blue.

  • You must have a title and short description

If you are curious how the contest is judged, go to the contest page by clicking here.  You will get an in depth description of the rating process for each contest submission.

And now onto the winning deck....

Emerald Knight's deck isn't perfect, but it did score the highest in the contest.  He has a good selection of Wizard cards and excellent support using green's pump up cards and blue's new Crafty Pitmage to bestow the unblockable ability on any creature.  Some of the cards are pictured here to the right.

When I first glanced at the deck I though, "Wow... I'm thinking.  that's a miracle."

Actually, what I though was, "where are you getting your mana from?  For the kickers on the battlemages that is?"  I then noticed the Ceta Disciple can transform green mana into any color and his deck has three fertile grounds.  That will do for me, since the kickers are relatively inexpensive on both the battlemages.  Both of these battlemages give the deck a great deal of versatility since you can destroy non-black creatures, gain life, shock a target or destroy an artifact.  That's pretty good if you ask me.  None of the other decks had as much versatility as this deck.

In terms of green, Emerald Knight uses a good selection of efficient pumps including Giant Growth (+3/+3), the cycle pump card Primal Boost, Muscle Burst and Diligent Farmhand (which work very well together).  Then there is Thriss, Nantuko Primus, who offers an unblockable creature a big bonus of +5/+5.  That's almost beautiful.

If the beatdown aspect of this themed wizard deck doesn't work, you can always use the Supreme Inquisitor to mill your opponent to death.

His original descriptions was as follows:

"If I have my stacking rules right, this should work.  It's a blue-green wizard deck that intends on taking full advantage of the Craft Pathmage.  Use the Crafty Pathmage to make a creature (with power 2 or less) unblockable, and then boost it using Thriss, Giant Growth, Kamahl, Fist of Krosa, or Muscle Burst.  Even having 2 Ceta Disciples can boost a creature (one to turn a green into a red and the other to five a creature +2/+0 until end of turn).

The Ceta Disciples and Fertile Ground can produce the other colors, including red, white and black for the kickers (surprise!) or the Ceta's boosting ability.  No Craft Pathmage?  Supreme Inquisitor should be able to cause more than enough problems until the Crafty Pathmage shows up.  Thriss and Kamahl boosting abilities make them a strong presence in this deck."

Yup.  That says it all.  Thank you everyone for your contest entries.  Below you will find the other decks and their respective scoring in the contest.  I look forward to all of your entries in the next contest.

Sincerely,

Ghilias
