Spirit Guidelines |
6/2/03.
Last months contest was all about creating a DECKING (MILL-style)
deck. This month I am going to propose a themed contest. Make
your deck a SPIRIT theme deck. Whether it is the name SPIRIT or a
creature type SPIRIT, make it a theme deck. You have plenty of
options available to you as there are fifty-two different creatures with
the Class "SPIRIT". Below is also a list of cards that
have something to do with SPIRITS which you must use in your deck.
Details are below. Note that if you use any card highlighted in
yellow in your deck (from the list below), you get bonus points.
Enjoy and good luck!
What are
the guidelines for entering the contest?
-
The deck cannot be more
than 60 cards and not less than 60 cards.
The deck must be a
theme deck using SPIRITS as your theme.
Use cards from any
set (INCLUDING SCOURGE)
You must use at least
two of the cards listed below in the quantity
of four each in your deck.
(example: 4 Spirit Cairn & 4 Daru Spiritualist would be in
your deck)
Note: You can still use other cards from the list. As long
as you use
4 each of at least two you have fulfilled this requirement.
No Power Nine
cards.
The deck can be any
number of colors including mono-chromatic.
You deck must have
at least one legendary card. This includes legendary
lands,
artifacts and/or creatures.
Have fun and be
creative
-
You
must have a title and short description
There is now a SPIRIT
creature page and a list to the right of all creatures
that count as spirits. Email you submission to streetz@magicdeckvortex.com. |

| How
was your deck get scored? |
|
If you read the article for
the winner of the October Contest, you will now know that I have an
established rating system. You can get a total of 25 points or 5 five
points in each of the following five categories.
BALANCE:
If you have a mono color deck, you don't have to worry about this
score. If you don't, then worry. Do you have an equally balance
card selection. Is it 50% - 50% in terms of say blue - white? If
not, try to balance it out so that you have equal chances to cast any of the
spells in your hand with the lands you have. You get the idea.
COHESIVENESS: Do all
of your combos and cards work together? Do certain cards contradict
the benefits of another? Well, if your cards don't work together well
you are likely to score poor in this category. Cohesivify your deck
and be sure all cards work efficiently together with your ultimate goal:
winning.
FOCUS: A
perfectly focused deck has 20 lands and 40 spells and 10 different spells to
choose from. That is as focused as you get. The closer you are
to this the higher you rate in this category. If you card variety
exceed 20 different cards, then, well.. you will probably score low.
Lands don't really count towards this one.
CREATIVITY: Are you
making a copy of some already well established combo deck? If so, then you
are not being creative. Creative isn't copying your deck out of SIDEBOARD
magazine and tweaking one land to a Grand Coliseum... its being original and
making a new combo, even if it isn't the best. Show me you are
thinking about your cards interactions. If you do, you are likely to
score high. Be heedless in your creativity (thus the picture to the
left).
OVERALL PLAYABILITY: With
all of the above in mind, after the deck is finished.. will it play
well? Or will it bomb even against a low-budget real deck. You
don't have to have the cards to make a deck for this contest. Know
that and go all out. Black Lotus and Mox... go for it (if it
fits). Don't go crazy though. I don't score more just because
you have the power nine cards. Those, honestly, mean nothing to
me. Make sure you deck has win conditions and win potential and you
will score well in the overall playability category.
I would encourage you to try this out.. and how bad could
it hurt. It won't. You can submit up to three decks to the
contest, so try a few different angles. When submitting the decks,
please give me a brief description and use of combos. Thanks!

4 Birds of Paradise

3 Phantom Nantuko |

of Spirits.
SUBMISSION DESCRIPTION: This is, I
think, a good spirit control deck. It works with Tradewind Rider and
Armageddon. When you have three creatures (one of theme should be a
Tradewind Rider) play Armageddon. Then, with the Rider, return your
opponent's creatures to his hand. Seedborn Muse helps to do this
quicker. Your opponent will slowly but surely lose all board control
(creature-wise). Windborn Muse is the finishing touch as even if your
opponent has creatures still, they will not be able to attack given the
ability of the white Muse. Phantom Nantuko and Sibilant Spirit are there
for the kill (beatdown)... and Soul Echo is support. [This detail was
reworded so that all could understand.]

2 Pattern of Rebirth

SUBMISSION DESCRIPTION: The Deck works
by playing a combo using Carnival of Souls, Caller of The Claw, Soul
Warden and Recurring Nightmare, first playing Soul Warden(it is used to
protect from the damage from Carnival of Souls), then Carnival of Souls,
then recurring nightmare, then play another creature, but still with the
Warden in play, then sacrifice to the Phyrexian Altar, to add a green
mana, then add two more with land and play a caller of the claw, it will
create a bear, adding two black mana to the pool, then sacrifice the
caller to the recurring nightmare, to recover the creature sacrificed to
altar, it will add another black mana, then with 3 black mana play
Recurring Nightmare again, then sacrifice the creature to recover the
caller of the claw to play, it will create three new bears, adding 4
black mana to the pool, with three of them play nightmare again and
sacrifice the caller and keep adding more mana that way, each time with
more mana and more bears, with all the black mana that will be generated
by Carnival of Souls, there are still the bears to sacrifice to altar,
to create a huge Soul Burn, and there is also March of Souls, that can
produce lots of black mana with carnival/caller combo, i also added a
rector and a pattern of rebirth for fetching, and a karmic guide to help
some recovering and that can produce more Carnival mana earlier.

SUBMISSION DESCRIPTION: The deck I call
"Riding on the Phantom Army" runs like a control deck,
complete with Tradewind Rider and Windborn Muse, March of Souls and
Eternal Dragon. It packs some beef though with its Phantom Nantuko,
Phantom Centaur, Phantom Nishoba, Eternal Dragon, and Nantuko Monastery.
Watch out for hordes of spirits as you Compulsion to get good cards
while getting 1/1 Spirits at the same time. Mana really isn't a problem
here and neither is speed, thanks to Fastbond and Exploration.
