Everyone seems to like the Myr!
Congratulations, Daniel Blount, on scoring first place!

10/12/03.  Myr, Myr, given it's brief time frame to submit a deck since the InViSc deck building contest didn't work out, was a complete success.  There were over 20 entries in just two weeks and the quality of decks is amazing.  As usual, there were a number of decks that didn't fit within the guidelines or didn't follow the basic Theme, Legend, 60 cards, Name and description requirements.. but that's normal.  There were a number of cool combos and many entries were very well thought out.

Click here to see the score matrix or just read through this introduction and overview because the scores are below that.  Also, all twenty-two decks are posted on this page.  Any deck highlighted in darker red with have card pics posted with the deck and will also be added to the Magic Deck Vortex Deck Database.  I added a little more information to the scoring matrix including the deck theme and card detail summary.  This helps me transfer the information to the main database and also offers you a little more insight into the decks from just looking at the scores.

Lodestone Myr - Storage Matrix wins first.
Congratulations Daniel Blount on scoring first place in the contest.  A little fun fact: he submitted the deck with an alternate name (which I found humorous): How Big is Your Lodestone.  Other than that, another thing that really caught my eye was the Lodestone Myr - Storage Matrix combo.  The wording on Storage Matrix is, "As long as Storage Matrix is untapped, before a player untaps all permanents he or she controls during his or her untap step, that player chooses artifacts, creatures, or lands. Permanents not of the chosen type don't untap this untap step."  With Lodestone Myr you can tap the Storage Matrix at the end of your opponent's turn (for free) and thus still untap everything you control.  This is an excellent control mechanism and thus Daniel's Deck uses it to assist his win condition.  As an additional bonus, the Storage Matrix was included in the list of cards you could use to gain bonus points.  Well done, Daniel.

Below is the deck is submitted with no modifications.

Mini-Myr Blitz
by Daniel Blount
A no-color Myr Theme Deck

4 Gold Myr
4 Silver Myr
4 Copper Myr
4 Iron Myr
4 Lodestone Myr
4 Myr Retriever
4 Myr Enforcer
4 Storage Matrix
3 Skeleton Shard
1 Sword of Kaldra

4 Vault of Whispers
4 Seat of the Synod
4 Ancient Den
4 Tree of Tales
4 Great Furnace

Skeleton Shard and Sword of Kaldra act as combo and back-up support with a load of other mana-producing Myr.  Myr Retriever helps to get back some of those artifact cards you opponent's destroy.  Great Deck, Daniel and thanks for entering the contest.  Actually, thank you to all who entered the contest.  This page would not exist for everyone's reference and theme deck pleasure without all of your entries.

Since Daniel scored first place, he was given the option to choose the next mechanic feature, card feature or top 30 list as the prize.  He chose to do a top 30 Zombie list so in the meantime I am working on that.  I have the top 30 list done, I just have to find a few more decks and lay the page out.  Expect it before the end of the month.

In Depth detail of your deck is good.
There were a number of decks that broke down several elements of their approach to the final deck.  Some even went into the pre-thought.  Know that I enjoy seeing your thought process before the deck list.  One example would be Incubating Myr, where the creator, Ronald Mario, goes into his options for the deck.  Here is the paraphrased text from his email:

I'm trying to keep this deck T2 which is more challenging for me instead of using some strong T1 cards.  This has become quite difficult. However, the first T2 cards that come to mind are obviously blue’s Fabricate and Thoughtcast.   I was also thinking of including white and/or black as my secondary color.  Let’s take a look at some of the cards:

White:
Shared triumph -- small pumping with only +1/+1
wrath of god – Nice removal but it’s WW in the mana cost is quite discerning.

Black:
Death Pit Offering -- bigger pump, and destroying all the Myr won't be a problem since next round all of them will be 3/3.
Decree of pain & infest – The departure of Mutilate hurts.  I know I won’t have many swamps in the deck so both these choices are though.

The most difficult part is choosing a Legend available in T2.  Here’s my options:

  1. Pit fighters & Kamahl—I definitely have to disregard all of them. Visara and Arcanis are okay here, but the triple color makes me pull out my hair when I playtest. Nope.
  2. Ixidor -- He's just a crappy legend in a non-morph deck Nope.
  3. Akroma or Phage – Both are nice, but again, triple W and quadruple B is not good
  4. Mistform Ultimus – True, this guy is a Myr, but I can’t really do much with him here. Nope.
  5. Karona False God & Sliver Overlord – Definitely no – 3 more colors than I want to handle. Nope.
  6. Bladewing The Risen – This guy is dragon oriented, not Myr oriented. Nope.
  7. Glissa Sunseeker – She’s an anti artifact Legend so I won't put her in an artifact deck. Moreover, she’s green… Nope.
  8. Bosh Iron Golem -- Well, can say nothing more. I don't want to use Mindslaver, so maybe I can do something with him. Chosen.

This was nice and quite in depth.  His final deck didn't score in the top 5, but he still has a great deck.  Not many submitted a T2 deck, which I will admit, is extremely difficult to do and still have a good result.  There was also a deck that submitted an all MIRRODIN deck.  This deck is called "Come and Get Some Mirrodin" and was created by Lucifer Von Faust.

Deck Names are getting better.
There were a number of creative names in the contest as well as decks that were submitted without a name.  Some of the cool names include:

  • Mini-Myr Blitz (Mini-Me reference)

  • Oh My oh Myr (just creative)

  • MYRaculous (Miraculous sound-alike)

  • Pentametal Myr (reference to all metal -- which was a theme in the deck)

  • Even the Myrs (a deck with almost all casting costs divisible by 2)

  • MORB (Myr - Orb)

  • A Keld's "Catch 22" (I looked this one up for myself and other's who don't know what it means. A catch-22 is a paradoxical rule that has the same effect as "Heads I win, tails you lose." Whatever happens, you lose either way. Keld refers to Maraxus.)

Magic Deck Vortex takes pride in having a lot of decks as well as a lot of creative names.  Great MTG minds like Anthony Alongi, Mark Gottlieb and Jay Moldenhauer-Salazer are in my book of creative name designed.  Remember when submitting a deck to MDV, try to make the name funny, interactive or just thought provoking.

Too many combos, not enough time.
The joys of having this contest come in many different forms.  One of which is the combos I find in your decks.  Here is a brief list of some of the combos taken from the entries; some of these combos may have already seen exposure on the MIRRODIN combo page here at Magic Deck Vortex.

Bloodshot Cyclops - Sword of Kaldra
Sword_of_Kaldra.jpg (29928 bytes)Bloodshot_Cyclops.jpg (23304 bytes)This combo was found in Myrranoid.
Optimizing a creature for the Cyclops is great.  Giant Strength, Fists of Anvil, Bloodlust... these are all great.  What's even better is something that stays in play, like the Sword of Kaldra.  The creature gets +5/+5 (at a heavy equip cost) and when you sacrifice the creature, you deal 5 more damage and the Sword stays in play waiting until next turn when you sacrifice another creature.  A cheaper way to go about this combo is by using the Bonesplitter of Vulshok Battlegear.

Isochron Scepter - Vitalize / Shock.
isochron_scepter.jpg (26541 bytes)vitalize.jpg (22202 bytes)This combo was found in Oh My, Oh Myr.
With the right back up cards, the Isochron Scepter and Vitalize could get you infinite mana.  While these aren't new combos by any means, they are excellent ways to abuse the Scepter from Mirrodin.  Shock, when imprinted on the Scepter, provides you with a consistent stream of damage for only 1 colorless mana.

Lodestone Myr - Storage Matrix
Lodestone_Myr.jpg (27459 bytes)storage_matrix.jpg (17558 bytes)This combo was found in Mini-Myr Blitz.
Storage Matrix is a limited version of Stasis and more importantly an artifact.  With the Lodestone Myr you can tap the Matrix before you turn and thus keep your opponent limited in untapping and you without an untap limitation.  Efficient and not too expensive, this combo is awesome.

Skeleton Shard - Mindslaver - Myr Retriever
mindslaver.jpg (29227 bytes)Skeleton_Shard.jpg (24952 bytes)Myr_Retriever.jpg (27927 bytes)This combo was found in MYRaculous.
This isn't on my list of FUN combos to play or INEXPENSIVE combos to play, but it is a nifty combo at best.  While this takes 13 mana to recur each turn, you can consistently control your opponent's turn since you can return the Mindslaver to your hand with the Retriever and you can return the Retriever to your hand with the Skeleton Shard.  Nice little interaction.  This will make your magic playing community not want to play with you, though.

Myr Incubator - Coat of Arms
Myr_Incubator.jpg (30698 bytes)coat_of_arms.jpg (23561 bytes)This combo was found in several entries.
Myr Incubator is one of my favorite cards from the MIRRODIN set.  What makes it even better and makes the 6 mana cost activation not so bad is to have the Coat of Arms in play.  When you sacrifice and Incubator and search your library for like 10 artifacts cards.. remove them from the game.. and then put 10 1/1 Myr tokens into play.. they are suddenly 10/10 Myr tokens from the Arms.  Wonderful.

Vedalken Archmage - Empyrial Plate
vedalken_archmage.jpg (44600 bytes)Empyrial_Plate.jpg (29149 bytes)This combo was found in Come and Get Some Myr.
If you were playing around the time of the Mirage Block you are very familiar with Empyrial Armor.  This was a white card that did the same thing as the plate for only 1WW.  It sped up white weenie wins and massacred several decks at tournaments.  The Empyrial Plate is the same card but just a little more expensive and better since it sticks around.  With the Archmage, you can optimize the bonus of the Plate since you can keep you hand full with a bunch of artifacts in your deck.

Covetous Dragon - Extruder
extruder.jpg (24363 bytes)covetous_dragon.jpg (15313 bytes)This combo was found in Myrfire.
Extruder is nice and really didn't get too much action back in the Urza's Block days.  However, now that there are so many good artifacts to go around with the release of Mirrodin you can optimize the Extruder's excellent ability.  With the Covetous Dragon, which must have artifacts in play to stick around, you can sacrifice all but one of your artifacts to swing for a final kill.  These cards are more synergy-istic than a combo, but they work really well together.

Megatog - Myr Retriever - Urza's Incubator
Myr_Retriever.jpg (27927 bytes)megatog.jpg (48025 bytes)urzas_incubator.jpg (21599 bytes)
This combo was found in Kamahl, Fist of the Myr.
This is an original infinite combo using two Myr Retrievers, Megatog and the Incubator (Urza's).  With Urza's Incubator, all your Myr can cost 2 less, making them 0 to cast.  With two Retrievers, you can sacrifice one to the Megatog and bring the other in your graveyard back to you hand.  Cast it again for nothing and repeat.  The end result is a 1,000,002/1,000,003 Atog with trample.

That's all!  Thanks for reading through this introduction to the scores and decks. Don't forget to enter the deck building contest for October, Level Headed Ness.

John Streetz, webmaster of www.magicdeckvortex.com

P.S. Help MDV out and click on the Top listing in the header (left upper corner) and also support the sponsors by purchasing your stuff there! Thanks for entering the contest or reviewing the results.  It's been another good one!

Below are the guidelines for the contest:

  • The deck cannot be more than 60 cards and not less than 60 cards.

  • You must have a title and short description.  If you don't, you submission will get a -1 penalty.

  • You can use cards from any set (including, of course, MIRRODIN!)

  • If a card is restricted in any format, you must restrict that card to a quantity of only one.

  • No power nine cards (original Moxes, Black Lotus, Time Walk, Ancestral Recall, and Time Twister)  There is a -5 penalty for using any of these cards.

  • The deck can be any number of colors including mono-chromatic.   If you go the no-color route (using not color spells and only artifacts, then you get +1 bonus points.)

  • You deck must have at least one legendary card.  This includes legendary lands,
    artifacts and/or creatures.
If not, your deck will lose 1 point.

  • Feel free to use the combo pages to give you ideas for your deck.

  • Try not to copy any deck already on Magic Deck Vortex

  • Decks are rated based on the information below.  The rating system has changed so you might want to review it again.

  • Have fun and be creative

  • If you win the contest you get to pick one of the next contest themes and you get to choose the next TOP 30 CARD listing or the next FEATURED CARD.

Below are cards that you could have used to get bonus points.

All of the entries were given the following cards to either use or not use; if used they got bonus points.  Typically, each card used is +.02 points unless it is just randomly placed.  If it had a purpose then the deck got the points.  You should always be careful not to use a card and revolve the deck around it and completely miss the point of the contest.  One deck, Myrfire, was a great deck but lost several points for not being a MYR oriented theme deck.  The Myr were thrown in only for mana acceleration.  It was still a good deck, though.  Anyway, here is the list:

Description of deck by Daniel Blount:
As the type implies, this deck is all about creating a huge Lodestone Myr to trample over an opponents defenses. With a deck of sixty artifacts, this shouldn't be terribly difficult. I put in a huge mana base for the obvious advantage it could yield. If something doesn't go right, the Skeleton Shards and Myr Retrievers can stall until you're able to pop out the big boys. Myr Enforcer may cost 7 mana, but the affinity for artifacts part makes it an early/mid-game freebie. The friendly Storage Matrix allows you to untap anything that was used to pump the Lodestone or cast another spell while leaving opponents at a potential lack of resources. The addition of the Sword of Kaldra is really just to put a fun little twist on things should you happen to pull it out.

Oh My, oh Myr!

Description of deck by Nosajtpno:
Imprint Vitalize on the Isochron Scepter. Use Karn, Silver Golem to change the Isochron Scepter into a creature. Tap all your artifact creatures (other than the Scepter) to power up Lodestone Myr, then use the Scepter to untap all your creatures... Including itself! With the mana from your other Myrs in play, you can do this over and over to give your Lodestone Myr as much power as you want!

One of the nicer things about this deck is that since everything costs colorless mana in multiples of two (other than vitalize, which is just for imprinting), we can fill the deck with the double mana producing Mercadian Masques lands for a quick start. Even if there ends up being only one of these lands in your starting hand, that's enough for two mana producing Myrs, which can take it from there.

Bubble Matrix is nice, because it allows your weaker Myrs to block without worrying about dying, and won't keep YOU from winning because Lodestone Myr has trample.  Brass Herald lets you get some more Myrs faster, and, as an added bonus, powers them up too.  Phyrexian Splicer gives our deck defense against decks we wouldn't otherwise be able to block (flying and shadow), as well as keeping our opponent from getting past the Bubble Matrix with creatures that have trample. Isn't it great to be able to steal your opponent's abilities?

Description of deck by it's author:
There are a few naughty things you can do with this deck, and it has quite impressive mana acceleration. You can obviously use Tinker or Fabricate to fetch a fatty flier like Platinum Angel or Clockwork Dragon, but that's not what it's all about. Myr Incubator is what it’s all about. Sacrificing the Incubator on your opponent's turn is pretty cruel, as there are 39 (!) artifacts in the deck ready to become angry Myr tokens. Coat of Arms is an obvious choice, you may not need it for the Incubator kill, but... well, it's a creature themed deck, right?

Anyway, your best friend in this deck is the little Myr Retriever. He recurs an artifact to your hand when he dies. So your foe didn't like the Mindslaver thing? Do it again! And now the wicked part: Tap the Skeleton Shard to retrieve the Retriever! See a pattern there?

I know you need 13 mana to pull this off every turn. But controlling 3 of 4 turns played is nice, too. Don't underestimate the 'Slaver, it's the coolest thing ever. To get the pieces together, use Tinker and the awesome Thirst For Knowledge (remember you can get discarded artifacts back for even more card advantage).

Description of deck by Jon Bartlett:
The idea behind this deck is To get out a Myr Incubator and a Coat of arms. In the meantime, the multitude of Myr can chump block to keep attackers at bay. I threw in the Artifact lands for fodder for the incubator and Bosh is there for a finishing move should the need arise. Planar portal can help get whatever you need from finishing the Urzatron to getting your coat of arms or incubator. With a coat of arms and twenty or so 20/20 myr tokens, a win is assured.

Description of deck by Mrz1:
The intended theme of this deck is to include all 5 metallic Myrs and 5 other spells with the same metals in their names. The result is an almost colorless deck (the exception is Golden Wish). The deck has very little land since it relies on the Myrs for manna production. An early incubator gets the Myrs out for free. Copper Gnomes can get out an early Herald or Iron Golem or can bring out any desired artifact via Golden Wish. Golems are used early on for blocking. The winning condition is an all-out attack by Coat of Arms powered Golems and Myrs.

Description of deck by Ruud Schoemaker:
The name is a reference to the mana curve of this deck: it only has 2 and 4 (and higher) casting cost cards. The lands (Crystal Vein, City of Traitors & Ancient Tomb) can therefore produce 2 mana per activation, and the other 2 lands (Vault of Whispers & the legendary Urborg) produce the black mana and can pay for Sol Ring, which gives 2 mana. The goal is to win with the Myr Enforcer & Lodestone Myr, while destroying opponents creatures with Doom Cannon (set to Myr) and Riptide Replicator (of course also set to myr). Don't forget the Wind cards, as they can wreak Havoc on your opponent.  Alpha Myr, Leaden Myr & Myr Retriever are strong 2 drops and help for affinity. Reprocess is a nice way to refill your hand later in the game while sacrificing excess land and smaller creatures (& tokens).

Come and get some Myr.

Description of deck by Lucifer Von Faust:
All cards are from the Mirrodin set , so I could not really test it ( only a bit in my mind ) . Against really fast decks it's not working well , but against the other it must work. Broodstar is in it for the obvious reason, Override is a good counter spell from second turn on. The first turn you can't do a thing just wait , that's the biggest disadvantage of this deck. The combo Archmage, Empyrial Plate works pretty well because the cards can really stand good on their own in this deck. Bosh Iron Golem can finish it of if you can't get a Coat of Arms. You must keep the override to counter really big spells ( board clearers ( ex. Wrath of God ) , not small creatures and stuff.

Myr Massacre.

Description of deck by David C. Nelson:
This deck is designed to pump out mana producing creatures in the first few turns to be able to activate the wonders of the Myr Incubator as soon as possible. When the Myr Incubator is used, every card in the deck should be removed save for the 4 Coat of Arms if they haven't been played already. That way, on the next turn, you will draw a Coat of Arms and play it in order to turn your giant army of weenie artifact creatures into an army of giant artifact creatures. All of the mana producing Myr creatures are important, the color of the mana they produce is irrelevant considering this deck is composed of all artifacts.

At first I considered making my legendary card be Tolarian Academy, an obvious choice, but then I realized that it would prevent me from removing it with the Myr Incubator therefore throwing off the 100% guarantee of drawing the Coat of Arms. That is also the reason why I decided to use artifact lands and Karn, Silver Golem. Karn fits into the deck in the fact that he can turn the incubator into a creature in the instance that you don't want to bring out your army just yet, and he also makes a good blocker while your still building things up. This deck still works if you never play either a Coat of Arms or a Myr Incubator, just not nearly as well. This deck is very customizable, and its only true threat is a mass creature removal deck. I wanted to theme the decks around Myrs, so I decided to add the Alphas and Omegas, I could easily sideboard them for a more strategic approach to a certain deck but I find them versatile, dispensable, but most of all, cool. 60 cards is a good number for this deck because it enables the opportunity for a large army and keeps the chances of drawing vital cards high.

Kamahl, Fist of the Myr.

Description of deck by Jason Christensen:

The strategy is fairly simple, use Mishra's Workshop and Urza's Incubator to get out some little myr. Then the larger Myr Enforcers become easy to bring out. Once you have a small army out use Tribal Forcemage's or Kamahl's ability and trash the opponent. This works even better with an Alpha Status or two.

I also put in the Lodestone Myr/Howling Mine combo and another one I came up with myself. With Megatog, 2 Myr retrievers, and Urza's incubator you can just keep sacrificing the Retrievers for infinite attack with trample.

This deck can be kind of slow early on but trust me, I've proxy tested it, and it can be deadly

Description of deck by Superglavin:
The Myr provide fantastic mana acceleration. You play one on your second turn, 3rd turn dynamo, 4th turn dragon, 5th turn wildfire is pretty much game. The Iron and leaden Myr's provide cheap mana, while the myr retrievers get back anything that died before. The Covetous dragons and Extruders are you're usual win conditions, with Karn bringing up the rear. Arc Lightning provides removal, and gamble can get you what you want (usually) The dynamo's and Powerstones help you recover after a wildfire.

Incubating Myr.

Description of deck by Ronald Mario:
I try to abuse the usage of Myr tribal T2 deck including the Myr Incubator. It's good to do a board cleaner then sac the incubator and attack for the win with lot of big Myr. Thanks to the Myr which have mana acceleration, the deck is fast enough to go off ...

I also use the Lightning coils in case the Myr died (since they have small toughness) for the alternate winning condition. Another alternate winning is bosh, which is good by itself and able to fling the enforcer for 7 damage which is not bad. I also put oblivion stone in there in case I meet some annoying enchantment like worship and story circle, and also hoser enchantment like karma and choke. If not needed, the incubator can remove it from the library, or it can be another Bosh's basketball ...

Description of deck by Jason Christensen:

This deck is based around the infinite combos using Myr Retriever and Ashnod's Altar. You can do infinite damage with Disciple of the Vault or gain infinite life with Scrapheap. You can also achieve infinite attack with Lodestone Myr (just tap the retrievers before you sac them).

Even if you can't get an infinite combo you can still win. Just get out the Archmage, A's Altar, and a Disciple of the Vault or two and you can just keep sacrificing and drawing artifacts till you win. This deck is pretty slow at first and you'll probably take some damage (resist the urge to block), but it's deadly with a little time and luck.

Description of deck by Glenn Sales:
As 93% of the cards are artifacts, use the Myr Incubator to generate 20 - 40 odd Myr Tokens and swarm you opponent whilst using the Ensnaring Bridge to prevent counter attacks. The Naturalize are like gold...save them for something really special (i.e.. Worship, Form Of The Dragon, etc.). Use the Lodestone Myr to Trample the damage home or sac it to Bosh, Iron Golem and throw the huge Myr at your opponent.

That's one hell of a Myr.

Description of deck by Jereon Leliveld, from the Netherlands:
This deck is all about attacking with big Myr. All mana-accelerating Myr help me to get Myr Incubator and Coat of Arms on the table quickly. Then I strip my deck from all artifacts and attack with the Myr without summoning sickness, who are like 32/32 now and my really big Broodstar. Alexi helps me with keeping the board free of opposing creatures. Also we have the Lodestone Myr/Howling Mine combo for extra cards. The 8 lands that can make bleu mana, and the 4 Silver Myr might seem like a little low, but it doesn't mind if your Broodstar and Alexi are late-gamers. The Sideboard is meanly against control, mass destruction and lots of creatures.
