Mutant Mayhem Guidelines

April's deck building contest revolves around the new Mutant cards from Legions.  In the picture for the contest you see Polumorph at the top, Flamewave Invoker in the middle and Goblin Mutant at the bottom.

What are the guidelines for entering the contest?

  • The deck cannot be more than 60 cards and not less than 60 cards.

  • Use cards from any set.

  • You must use atleast two of the mutants from the Legions set in the quantity of four in your deck.

  • No Power Nine cards.  Any card that is banned in any format is not allowed in the deck.

  • The deck cannot be mono-color; you must use atleast two colors.

  • You deck must have at least one legendary card.  This includes legendary lands,
    artifacts and/or creatures.

  • You have to use two of the cards listed below.

  • You must have a title and short description

You can refer to the page I created for Creature Types: Mutants if you need to.  This deck will be a definite challenge.  Know I tried to use cards that go along with the idea of "Mutants" with the card selections below.  Next to each card is a short explanation of why I added the card to the list.  Remember: Go original.. that is the best.

Description of deck...[Simply put .. its a morph theme deck using the mutants!]

Webmaster Comments: Nice deck.  Honestly, I didn't even notice that there was a possibility for the combos you have in this deck (with the mutants and the morphing that is).  Nice job.  I would, however, replace the Mystic Snakes with 2 more Natural Orders and some good old counterspells (after you limit your Slate of Ancestory to 1 or 2).  It is good to see a deck like this with more than 20 lands, however your balance is a bit off.. but then again you have all morphing creatures and Ixidor.  Good job and thank you for the contest submission.  Note:  Your penalty is for not using two of the cards from the list provided on the guideline page.  You use 2 Natural Orders but no other card (in any quantity).

4 Flametongue kavu
4 Fiery Temper
4 Shock
4 Goblin Dynamo
2 Violent Eruption
2 Rorix Bladewing
4 Wild Mongrel
4 Basking Rootwalla
4 Arrogant Wurm
4 Roar of the wurm
2 Metamorphic Wurm
2 Nostalgic dreams
Zep's Mutated Madness.
Description: When I saw that Flametongue kavu must be used in this contest, I decided to make a mutant deck using the madness mechanic.  As you can see, the only card with discarding ability is Wild Mongrel and Nostalgic dreams. But by using the dream, you can return cards back to your hand while playing madness cards. Just make sure you don't return irrelevant cards because you might destroy the Metamorphic Wurm's threshold. And also don't play Basking Rootwalla on your first turn. It is meant to pump Wild Mongrel up.  Fiery Temper is a not so cheating version of lightning bolt and discarding Roar of the wurm and pay it's flashback cost is worth it. Why?  imagine a 6/6 wurm crashing in front of your opponent for just 3 colorless and 1 green. Goblin Dynamo and Rorix Bladewing is added to give extra fire power and they might just reduce your opponent's live to zero when he think he is in control.

COMMENTS: You missed some of the guidelines from the contest, mainly the using two mutants from the Legions block in the quantity of four each.  You only used one, Goblin Dynamo.  For that, you lost a point.  But, it is a nice deck.. very Frog in a Blender like.  I think this deck would be stronger if you added some more mana to fuel your mana curve.  The 20 land count, unfortunately, does not work anymore for a 60 card deck.  Getting that opening hand with two or three lands can be very important.  Overall, your deck is good, slightly broad, but good.  Without more mana acceleration, you cannot use the full benefits of the Goblin Dynamo (fireball) effect.  You have a lot of quick burn and good madness action going on, but the contest requires a little more ingenuity than just taking an existing deck and replacing a few cards to fit the guidelines.  Thank you for your submission.  You still did an excellent job.
