Monthly Deck Building Contests
Back ] Home ] Up ]

11/1/04.  I am bringing back the deck building contests and note that the old contests aren't dead.  If you have submitted deck submissions for previous contests, please email me for more information.  In the meantime, let the new contest begin.

Your goal is to build the best deck using only one legendary creature from the Champions of Kamigawa set.  With all of the new (and cool) legends from this latest set you should find ease in this contest.  You must make this deck fulfill the needs of the chosen Legend.  For instance, if you choose Zo-Zu the Punisher.. make it a deck that makes full use of Zo-Zu.  Your deck must also contain a minimum of one Legendary Land and one artifact (quantity of 4).  No power nine cards.  Feel free to use the CHK combo page for ideas.

If you have questions about this, please email me.  Note: Please do not use the deck submission function to post your deck.  Only email your deck submissions to magicdeckvoretx@hotmail.com with 'contest' somewhere in your title line.  A summary of the guidelines is to the right.

Here is a sample deck list:

Sample The Making of a Legend deck submission:
Colors:
Green-Red
Type:
S.C.S. - Zo-Zu the Punisher

4 Zo-Zu the Punisher
4 Shock
4 Glacial Ray
4 Sulfuric Vortex
4 Ruby Medallion
4 Vedalken Orrery
4 New Frontiers
4 Creeping Mold
4 Thermokarst

1 Keldon Necropolis
4 Taiga
2 Forest
17 Mountain

You'll notice the deck fulfills all of the requirements.  It has at least one artifact (of four cards) and only one Legendary creature.  The deck encourages an opponent to play lands through cards that destroy lands like Thermokarst and Creeping Mold (thus allowing the Zo-Zu Punisher deal damage when they do)... and you can combo for a deadly blow using the Zo-Zu - Vedalken Orrery - New Frontiers combo.    There is one Legendary Land (Keldon Necropolis) and the deck is 60 cards.

Note: I would encourage you to use the flip legends and any other Legend than Kiki, Mirror Breaker.  In fact, if you correctly build a deck using a flip legend, then you will get +1  bonus points.

Have fun with this contest.  Be original.  Make sure the deck functions well and know you can email more than one submission.

The winner of this contest will get to choose a future feature for MDV and get your deck added to the deck database of Magic Deck Vortex!  Good luck!  You must have your entry or entries submitted to me via email by 12/1/04 to count.  ~John Streetz~

11/2/04 - Below is a listing of all of the Legends from Campions of Kamigawa!

Guidelines for entering the contest:
  • Use any card from any set except any Power Nine cards (Time Walk, Time, Moxes, Black Lotus, etc.) and except for any card that has been banned and/or restricted in Vintage, Type 1.5 or Extended.
  • Include a deck name and your name and a short description.  You will lose points if you don't have these things.
  • Keep your deck to 60 cards.  No more.  No less.
  • Be creative and original. No net deck copies here.
  • Use only one Legendary Creature from Champions of Kamigawa to build your deck.  if you choose Azusa, you can't combo her with any other Legendary creature... at all.   This means no Azusa-Meloku combo deck. Your deck should be considered either a combo deck or a Single Card Strategies deck.
  • I would encourage you to use the flip legends or any other Legend than Kiki, Mirror Breaker.  In fact, if you correctly build a deck using a flip legend, your deck will score higher and may even get featured in the contest wrap up article.
  • Email you submissions to this email address.  (Note you can submit more than one deck to the contest.)  Do not use the deck submission feature on this site to submit your deck.  It will not get registered or counted if you use it.
  • Have fun.
  • The deck will no longer be scored as previously done for other contests.  I will make the judgments on each deck instead.  Although, I would encourage you to mind the previous criteria when building a deck: Cohesivity, Balance, Playability, Focus & Creativeness.
