Why
not after Mirrodin?
Congratulations, Ruud Schoemaker, on scoring first place! |
9/18/03.
That is, why didn't I have this contest after MIRRODIN was revealed?
I mean, with all the artifacts in this Fall's set, what was I
thinking? I guess I didn't have any clue. As far as the
contest goes, there were 13 entries, three of which I almost lost
including the first place one... but anyway, congratulations to Ruud for
scoring first place with 23.1 points. His deck was, by far, the most
original deck I found of the thirteen and he even gives a good description
of how the Sage of Lat-Nam could be better than Archivist (quoted below):
There are only two ways the Sage can be better than Archivist, that is 1) a combo deck were draw-a-card's are needed turn 3 (or 2 with acceleration). 2) When there are artifacts that have a effect when they are sacrificed.
These artifacts are Su-Chi, Cathodion and Junk Diver, where the first two are also very strong creatures for their mana cost and can double the available mana the next turn. (turn 3: Cathodion, turn 4: sac Cathodion gives 6 or 7 mana). Junk Diver returns destroyed (or sacrificed) artifacts back to your hand, also do 2 Junk Divers make Sage of Lat-Nam a creature that read: 3,T, draw a card.
How
right he is. One thing he forgot is to sac a creature (with the
Sage) before it is about to die for card advantage. One scenario
would be an artifact creature in combat who receives lethal combat damage;
you can tap the sage to sac the creature and draw a card after it deals
it's combat damage. Or, say your opponent wants to detonate, shatter
or creeping mold your Yotian Soldier... just tap the sage and say,
"HA!, you lose a card and I draw one". This works
especially well up against a Viashino Heretic or that Detonate I just
spoke of (pictured to the right).
There were a variety of
entries but many of them tried to include an infinite variant or concept
to their deck. At first, I though cool. Then I though, wow, this is
getting kind of contrived. The infinite elements can sometimes take
away from the effectiveness of the deck (which is reflected in the overall
playability scores of these decks).
In the meantime, before I
get into some of the other stuff for this little article/summary of the
contest, know the following. The deck guidelines are posted to the
right -- many of you abided by all of them. Also, you can click
here if you want to jump to the deck scores. Furthermore, thank
you to everyone who submitted an entry. Even if you didn't score
well it doesn't mean your deck is bad. I just have a list of things
I grade each deck by so you and I can see how 1st place deserves 1st
place. Sometimes the guidelines are appropriate while other times
the guidelines and score categories of the contest do not truly reflect
how good or bad a deck is.
The next contest is InViSc
which focuses on creating a deck from three sets only: Scourge, Visions
and Invasion. I strongly encourage all of you to enter this contest
with your best shot.
Some Cool
combos found in your entries.
 Diamond
Valley - Karn, Silver Golem
Found in Tinkering Sage,
this is great. Block something with your Silver Golem and watch him
become a 0/8 defender. If you're low on life, tap the Diamond Valley
land (from Arabian Nights) and sacrifice your Golem. You have
blocked the creature and you gain 4 life. Not a bad
combo! The Diamond Valley is also a great way to get a benefit from
a creature dying of lethal damage or a creature, like Su-Chi, that gives
you an effect when placed in the graveyard from play.
 Lifeline
- Scrapheap - Sage of Lat-Nam
Found in Sage of
the Scrapheap, this combo gets you life and cards. Since
Lifeline brings back your creatures at the end of a turn when they hit the
graveyard that turn and a creature is in play still, you get all your
sacrificed artifacts back and still get to draw a card. With the
Scrapheap, you get the card and the life since whenever an artifact is
placed in the graveyard from play, you gain a life.
 Hornet
Cannon - Sage of Lat-Nam
Here's a little efficient combo for you from the deck called Intruding
Artifacts. Use the Hornet Cannon for 3 to put a 1/1
flying hornet token into play which dies at the end of the turn.
Then, after you've attacked or blocked, or whatever with it, before the
end of the turn tap your Sage and draw a card. For three, you get a
card and a 1/1 flying hornet token for the time before your sacked
it.
  Brain
Freeze - Ornithopter - Hurkyll's Recall
This combo works with more than just an Ornithopter. Try lots of
little 0 casting cost creatures. When you have the cards to do it
cast a bunch of 0 cc creatures and then Recall them with Hurkyll's
Recall... then cast Brain Freeze. This combo was found in the Lat-Nam
is Freezing deck.

Sage!
RUUD WRITES: There are only two ways the Sage can be better than Archivist, that is 1) a combo deck were draw-a-card's are needed turn 3 (or 2 with acceleration). 2) When there are artifacts that have a effect when they are sacrificed.
These artifacts are Su-Chi, Cathodion and Junk Diver, where the first two are also very strong creatures for their mana cost and can double the available mana the next turn. (turn 3:
Cathodion, turn 4: sac Cathodion gives 6 or 7 mana). Junk Diver returns destroyed (or sacrificed) artifacts back to your hand, also do 2 Junk Divers make Sage of Lat-Nam a creature that read: 3,T, draw a card.
Another way to get artifacts in the graveyard is to play Tinker, which has a nice bonus ;-) of also fetching another artifact from the library, this can be Karn, but if he's already in your hand (or in play), you can fetch one of the artifacts of the 'toolbox', which all have strong effects and when animated with Karn, are very large
creatures. The Sky diamonds and Metalworkers help starting this deck in the first few turns and can later be sacrificed to Tinker or the Sage. |

WILLIAM
WRITES: What you should do in this deck, for the combo, is to tap the sage and sac an artifact creature to draw a card. With lifeline out, the creature comes back into play. and, with words of worship and
Scrapheap, you can gain 6 life per sage. With all four scrapheaps, that's
9 life a sage, and with 4 sages, that is 36 life a turn! You win by whittling them down with the Benevolent Champlains, or in big chunks with the
Phyrexian colossus. Another plus is that With the Urza's Armors, they have to hit you with something stronger than a 3/3 to do any damage.

EMERALD NIGHT
WRITES: The main goal of the deck is to swarm the opposition with lots and lots of hornets. Intruder Alarm is the key combo
piece, allowing the Sage of Lat-Nam, Aphetto Alchemist, Arcanis, and animated artifacts to untap with each hornet put into play. Junk Diver is a good artifact to sac into the Sage, since he can bring another artifact back from the graveyard. Karn animates the artifacts, and shield sphere is a really good blocker.

PATRICK WRITES: Just get lifeline in play with tinker or metalworker and abuse sage's drawing and gnome's life
gaining abilities.
If you can, sacrifice the Phyrexian
Colossus and/or Masticore and then play upheaval to win the game (when
the Colossus or Masticore come back into play because of the effect of
the lifeline). This game can be very nasty with a first turn tinker or Mox
to get metalworker in play.
Here are a few
details about LIFELINE for your reference, quoted from www.crystalkeep.com:
- It
works for all players and has errata to remove the "your
graveyard" text. [bethmo 1998/10/02]
- It
checks to see if there are any creatures in play controlled by any
player at the time the creature is put into the graveyard. If there
are, it will put the creature back even if there are no creatures in
play at the end of turn. [Urza's FAQ 1998/10/05]
- The
creature comes back even if Lifeline leaves play after triggering,
but before it resolves. [Urza's FAQ 1998/10/05]
- It
brings the card back even if the card was a creature only due to a
spell or ability. It comes back as if newly cast, however. [WotC
Rules Team 1998/10/18]
- If more
than one creature is in play and all the creatures in play go to the
graveyard at once (such as with Wrath
of God), then all of them are returned at end of turn. [WotC
Rules Team 1998/10/18] This is because all "leaves
play" triggers that check the state of the game check the game
state at the time right before the card left play. [D'Angelo
1998/11/17]
- It fails
to bring the creature back if the creature is not still in the
graveyard at the end of turn. [D'Angelo 1998/10/12]
- If
multiple creatures are coming back, they come back one at a time,
not all at once. This is because Lifeline triggered once for each
creature and set up a separate "at end of turn" effect for
each. [D'Angelo 1998/11/17]
- There is
no way to get an infinite loop with this card. This is because
"at end of turn" triggers that happen after you start
dealing with this turn's "at end of turn" triggers will
wait until the following turn to be played. [D'Angelo
1999/05/01]

Then when damage is on the stack sacrifice them to sage of Lat Nam to draw a card so
you can draw Tolarian academy and Candelabra of Tawnos to use a Infinite Capsize

The idea is to have an Elvish aberration
or a Krosan restorer (with threshold) , Intruder alarm and sage of Lat-Nam
in play and 1 junk diver in graveyard and another in hand : you can play infinite junk diver due to
aberration untapping with intruder alarm and draw most of you deck with sage of
Lat-Nam : sacrifice junk diver to get the other junk diver , play it , sacrifice it ... after that just wish for brain freeze : GAME OVER. If you have a helm in play it 's
infinite mana Energy tap help you to get an early aberration (tap junk diver
for 3 mana by example) Threshold can be gain by intuition and energy tap. It's just a simple combo deck but with a very little risk of mana screwing :)

HE WRITES: The deck stalls with 0 cost blockers that turn into card draw with Sage out. Intruder alarm untaps the Sage whenever a creature comes into play to use him over and over. Tinker tutors for Legends Mirari and Karn. Get huge mana with Tolarian Academy, artifacts and Metal Worker. With all the mana and Sage card drawing you cast a lot of spells (especially when they cost 0 along with
Hurkyll's Recall to put them back in your hand to cast them again) and then a huge Brain Freeze with Mirari and deck your opponent. Karn changes artifacts into creatures (giving more Sage
untaps) to block or attack. Black Lotus and 5 Mox artifacts would add to the deck making it a little quicker and make the Sage and
Hurkyll's Recall even better. This was fun!

Concordant Crossroads + Words of Wind + Sage of

The combo is easy to pull off with enlightened tutors and so much control. Also if you intuition all of your junk divers you already
have that part done. And just intuition the crossroads, WoW and Aluren, then cast replenish.
With so much control this deck works better than one might think.
P.S. This is my first time entering the contest, and I think it's really cool.
[Editor's note: This deck is
missing two Legends and has some of the power nine cards. This is
why is got a -6 penalty. Not a bad deck, though. Thank you
