(2006) Featured Combos -- Druids!!!
Last updated 3/12/06 (30/30
Combos; 2 infinite combos and 21 deck links!) |
Nantuko
Blightcutter - Darkest Hour |
Nantuko
Blightcutter was cursed to sideboards only for a while. He's a good
critter but the two abilities were too against black to make them worthy
in a main deck. Not anymore! Welcome Darkest Hour. With
this rare black enchantment, all other creatures are black and thus, your
Blightcutter is a foe to be reckoned with! |
 |
Squirrel
Wrangler - Groundskeeper |
It's
a Druid-Druid combo! The cost of sacrificing lands to the Wrangler
to generate Squirrel tokens can be costly. It isn't so bad when you
can bring those lands out of the graveyard and into your hand to play
again thanks to the Groundskeeper. The deck link is to an article
deck posted during Druid Week using one of the Vanguards as a means to
speed up the deck. |
 |
Nantuko
Tracer - Verdant Succession (Ashnod's Altar) |
How does this combo work? With Verdant Succession in play,
a Tracer in hand and one also in your graveyard, play the Tracer in your hand.
When it comes into play, you get to put a card from your graveyard on the bottom
of your library. Plus, because Verdant Succession is in play you get to search
your library for a card with the same name as Nantuko Tracer and put it into
play. Now you have two Tracers in play. However, if you sacrifice the first
Tracer you played to a card like Phyrexian Altar, Ashnod’s Altar, Carrion
Feeder, or anything else that can sacrifice a creature, when the second Tracer
comes into play, you can target the Tracer in your graveyard and repeat for
infinite whatever. Note: The deck link does not
include Ashnod's Altar but could easily be fixed to include it. |
 |
Nantuko
Cultivator - Rites of Spring or Library of Leng |
This
combo kind of reminds me of a cycle of life (not the card). If you
cast Rites of Spring and discard everything in your hand except the
Nantuko you get to then search your library for that many land cards.
THEN! Cast the Cultivator to discard all of those lands cards you
just searched for and put that many +1/+1 counters on the Cultivator AND
draw that many cards. In the end, you thin out your deck, you get a
big Cultivator and you end up with the same number of cards as you would
have after casting either card. Note:
You could always add Groundskeeper into your deck to get some of those
lands back into your hand.If you want
more, try Library of Leng instead of Rites. Whenever you discard
lands to the Cultivator, because Leng is a replacement effect discarding
really puts the lands back on top of your library and then you draw them
all back again.
Oh, and Crucible of Worlds likes the Cultivator too. |
 |
Krosan
Restorer - Freed from the Real - Heartbeat of Spring |
 Infinite
Mana... how do it work? Be sure your Restorer is enchanted with
Freed from the Real while you also have Heartbeat of Spring in play. You
can pull this off even without threshold. Tap a land (something that
can add blue to your manapool) to add UU to your manapool. Tap the
Restorer to untap that land. Tap it again (UUUU currently in your
pool). Spend U using Freed from the Real to untap the Restorer (UUU
currently in your mana pool). Repeat for infinite mana. |
 |
Hermit
Druid - Sutured Ghoul ... |
This
combo has had a few different faces, but this one is good enough for the
combo page. How it works: With a deck that has NO basic lands,
activate the Druid. Empty your library into your graveyard.
Cast Reanimate on the Sutured Ghoul and bring it into play. Remove
any number of creatures in your graveyard from the game to beef up the
Ghoul (usually just a few Krosan Cloudscrapers were needed). Also,
because Dragon Breath is in your graveyard and a creature with a converted
mana cost of six or more just came into play, put it into play attacked to
the ghoul. Now you have a huge Ghoul with haste that can attack for
the kill. Game over for your opponent. |
 |
Diligent
Farmhand - Muscle Burst - Pack Hunt |
I
was going to post this combo without the Pack Hunt, but that wouldn't be
enough considering it's not really a combo. However, then I
realized, wouldn't it be cool to Grab all four of your Farmhands?
That way you could play them all, sacrifice them for a basic land, and
then when you play Muscle Burst, you get the added bonus of 4 Farmhands in
your graveyard (which count as a Muscle Burst). Not the strongest
combo but I can see someone building a deck out of it. Note: The deck
link doesn't include Pack Hunt. |
 |
Verduran
Enchantress - Rancor |
This
enchantress loves to dance but even more so, loves to Rancor! Not
herself quite, but any of your creatures. In fact, she loves any
enchantment that can recur, Rancor being the best of the bunch. The
more enchantments you cast, the more cards you draw. Combine Rancor
with a creature that can sacrifice enchantments and you have a deck. |
 |
Broodhatch
Nantuko - Crypt Rats - Rite of Passage |
This
combo comes from one of Yusuke's Vanguard (AV) articles and thus it uses
one of the Vanguards to give his creatures +0/+2. Thus instead of
the Vanguard you could use a card like Veteran Armorer that gives all of
your creatures added defense. With all three cards in play, activate
the rats dealing one damage to each creature and each player. Rites
of Passage will activate putting a +1/+1 counter on each creature dealt
damage by the rats AND Broodhatch will generate a 1/1 green Insect token.
As your creatures get bigger you will be able to pump more mana into the
rats for a bigger effect from your Broodhatch. |
 |
Squirrel
Wrangler - Doubling Season |
Make
your lands count with the Wrangler. Getting two squirrels for a land
and 1G isn't bad, but with Doubling Season you could get 4 squirrels for
the same price. Throw in a Copy Enchantment (copying the Doubling
Season) and you get 8 squirrels for the low cost of one land and 1G.
Sounds fun. Then... finish off your opponent with an Overrun or one
big Squirrel Mod (literally)! |
 |
Yavimaya
Elder - Pattern of Rebirth |
The
point of this combo is to enchant the Elder with Pattern of Rebirth (note
that both are from Urza's Block) and then pay 2 to sacrifice the Elder and
draw a card. You get to search your library for a creature card and
put it into play AND you get to search your library for up to two basic
land cards and put them into your hand. Sounds like a deal to me. |
 |
Zoologist
- Congregation at Dawn or Sensei's Diving Top |
Zoologist
is a mediocre Elvish Piper at best. However, he does have combo
possibilities the Piper doesn't. Like Sensei's Diving Top or
Congregation at Dawn. Stack those creatures on top of your library
whatever way you like, but be sure to put your most expensive, fatty on
top so that you can activate the Zoologist and put it directly in play. |
 |
Promised
Kannushi - Conspiracy or Ashes of the Fallen |
Soulshift
is cool. But it only affects Spirits. That's kind of boring
after a while so why not mix it up? Conspiracy will turn all of your
creatures into a creature type of your choice (whether in play, your hand
or in graveyard). In this case, you would want it to be Spirits. You could
play with anything Birds, Clerics, Druids, Starfish... whatever you like.
But, that does cost a lot, doesn't it. A cheaper and more current
way to have the same effect is Ashes of the Fallen. It affects what
matters, your graveyard. Just make them all spirits. |
 |
Kamahl,
Fist of Krosa - Earth Surge |
With
these two cards you essentially can turn one of your lands into a 3/3
creature until end of turn for only one green mana. That's a pretty
good deal. The trick is having lots of real creatures that can
generate mana so that you can actually attack with the lands. In the
case of the deck link, this is a deck using a Vanguard although you could
always substitute Serra's Blessing for the Vanguard. |
 |
Did
you know...? |

To the right and left of this text is something called
the MDV Deck Link. You will only find these link buttons on the
combo pages. When you click on a MDV Deck Link it will take you to a
deck related to the combo where you found it.
If the button is to
the left of the combo text, this means there is a deck already linked.
If the link is to the right, there is a deck found or that is going to be
posted. Or it is a combo I am currently looking for a deck using it. Mind you, not all decks links are going to center
around that particular combo, although some do.
Remember, I
strongly encourage you to not copy any deck on MDV, but to use it as a
reference or inspiration for your own. Enjoy the combo pages! ~John Streetz~ |

Avenging
Druid - Psionic Gift or Arcane Teachings or... |
Avenging
Druid has a neat ability but the trick here is that it doesn't say 'combat
damage' to activate. Thus you can abuse his ability by enchanting
him with one of the mana Auras capable of pinging. Psionic Gift and
Arcane Teachings are two of the cards that jump to mind. If you want
a colorless means to do this, try Viridian Longbow. Now that the
druid can ping, every time you ping an opponent, you reveal cards from
your library until you reveal a land card. Note that this can
quickly deplete your library of cards so be sure to pack Reminisce or
something. |
 |
Fugitive
Druid - Flickering Ward or Whip Silk |
Whenever
the druid is enchanted, you draw a card. Why not find an
enchantment you can return to your hand and cast again. There are
a few out there but Flickering Ward works the best as it gives the Druid
protection from a color of your choice, casts for only one white mana and
returns to your hand for one white mana. It translates to WW: draw a card.
If want to stick to just green try Whip Silk. Here's a
deck using Whip Silk.
Tallowisp would make a nice addition to your Druid-Ward
combo as the spirit can fetch Auras (Enchant Creatures) for you.
Fugitive druid can also be fun with Mark of Eviction. |
 |
Wood
Sage - Haunted Crossroads or Relentless Rats |
Wood
Sage is unique as a gold 1/1 2cc Druid... but aside from reaching
threshold early and using him with Brainstorm, he's not that good.
Unless, of course, you have Haunted Crossroads in play. Add some
utility creatures to your deck and put them on top of your library with
Crossroads for only one black mana. Then fetch it with your Druid
and repeat each turn for just a tap on the druid's
part. Another fun way
to use the Wood Sage is with Relentless Rats. Hopefully, I don't
have to tell you how this one works. |
 |
Centaur
Rootcaster - Fireshrieker |
Assuming
you have a means to damage your opponent with the Rootcaster, why not give
it Double-Strike thanks to Fireshrieker? You deal twice the damage
and get to search your library for two basic land cards and put them into
play tapped. Plus! You get to shuffle your library twice in
one turn! Awesome. Where's this combo in Celixia? |
 |
Femeref
Enchantress - Autatog - Cessation |
Femeref
Enchantress is the opposite of Verduran Enchantress and her sister.
Whenever an enchantment is put into any graveyard, you draw a card.
Auratog is like her best friend. Whenever you sacrifice an
enchantment to give the Atog +2/+2 until end of turn, you get to draw a
card thanks to this she-druid. Combine that with Auras that come
back like Cessation, and you have yourself a deck! |
 |
Nut
Collector - Whispersilk Cloak - Death Match |
Nut
Collector generates a 1/1 green Squirrel Token every turn. Why not
make them evil death squirrels and keep a Death Match into play.
That way every turn you get a 1/1 squirrel and another creature gets -3/-3
until end of turn thanks to the Death Match. However, you know your
Nut Collector will be the first thing your opponent targets with the same
ability when he or she casts their own creature. That's where
Whispersilk Cloak comes in. Just equip the druid with the cloak and
watch him laugh when you opponent even thinks of targeting him. Fun
deck. |
 |
Druid's Call
- Veteran Bodyguard |
Druid's
call isn't a bad Aura - it's like the other half of Broodhatch Nantuko.
If you enchant a creature that is bound to take some damage, you can
generate lots of Squirrels. Take Veteran Bodyguard for example.
He gets all of your unblocked combat damage. And for each point of
that damage (whether he dies or not), you get to put a 1/1 squirrel token
into play thanks to the Druid's Call. |
 |
Mistform
Ultimus - Tribal Golem |
Would
you like to get the most use out of your Golem.. a.k.a. junk rare in my
eyes? Put him in a deck with the Mistform Ultimus. The
Golem's requirements are thus all checked ok for, and you now have a 4/4 trampling,
hasty, first striking, flying and regenerating golem!
Why is this considered a druid combo? Well, isn't
the Ultimus a Druid too? |
|
Viridian
Joiner - Blanchwood Armor |
Mind
you, any card that boosts power combos well with the Joiner, but most
others don't have the Synergy that Blanchwood Armor has. Both are
green and both go well in a deck with lots of forests (duh!).
Anyway, enchant the joiner with the Armor and watch him tap for lots of
mana (1+the number of forests you control) and be a heavy hitter if you
need him to be. The deck link doesn't use Blanchwood Armor with the
Joiner; instead it uses Rite of Passage and Pestilence! Same concept
though. |
 |
Kamahl,
Fist of Krosa - Goblin Sharpshooter - Dingus Egg |
 Lets
assume you have all three of these cards in play. Use Kamahl to
turn one of your opponent's lands into a 1/1 creature. Tap your
Sharpshooter to kill it and thus a creature/land goes into the
graveyard. Dingus Egg deals 2 damage to your opponent. Now
if you do this again and again... you have just Armageddon'ed your
opponent's lands AND dealt x*2 damage to your opponent (where x is the
number of lands you destroyed). Simple and effective. However,
this can be costly. Think Heartbeat of Spring! |
 |
Groundskeeper -
Army Ants |
Army
Ants are not quite the Carrion Ants from Legends, but even so, they are
quite a useful card. Not exactly optimal by itself, if combined
with a land recursion card (like groundskeeper), the ants can be quite
powerful and potent. Think of it this way, 1G = Destroy target
land (once per turn normally). Not bad. The trick is keeping
your 1/1 ants in play long enough to pull it off. Here is a deck
by Anthony Alongi called HUNGRY SLEEPY BUBBLE ANTS. He used Bubble
Matrix to keep the Ants free of fire and shocks. |
 |
Joiner
Adept - Harvester Druid |
Oooh..
another Druid-Druid combo. Joiner Adept is a great card and makes it
real easy to cast those bringers from Fifth Dawn. However, by having
both druids in play your Harvester can now tap for any color mana.
Yeah, I know... not the best combo in the world but
turning any creature into a pseudo birds of paradise isn't a bad thing. |
 |
Nullmage
Advocate - Ebony Owl Netsuke |
Ebony
Owl Netsuke is running rampant (I think) in standard right now.. but let's
use it for our casual purposes here. How can you keep your
opponent's hand full of cards so that the Netsuke activates? Cards
like Nullmage Advocate! Just make sure you can destroy an artifact
or enchantment. Rancor anyone? |
 |
Quagmire
Druid - Penumbra Creatures |
The
only black druid has to combo potential somehow! Well, this is a
stretch, but it's still a combo. When you need to destroy target
enchantment, tap the Druid and sacrifice one of your Penumbra creatures
(Kavu, Bobcat or Wurm) and bring a black version of that card into play.
Not bad for G. Mind you there are many more efficient ways to use
the Penumbra creatures but I had to include the Quagmire Druid in this
combo page somehow! |
 |
Oath
of Druids - Krosan Reclamation - Replenish |
This
is one of those crazy enchantment combos utilizing the Replenish card
from the Urza's Block. Make a creatureless deck with all three of
these and lots of enchantments including Opalescence. Then, after
activating the Oath of Druids, go through your entire library.
With everything in your graveyard, Flashback your Krosan Reclamation and
shuffle two cards back into your library (namely the Replenish) and next
turn cast it to bring all of your crazy enchantments into play as
creatures. Killer. |
|
Stone-Seeder
Hierophant - New Frontiers - Overgrowth |
Quoted
from Chris Millar @ www.wizards.com:"Imagine this scenario, if you will. You have an
active Hierophant and five lands in play. You tap all of your lands,
then untap one with the Hierophant, then tap it again. You decide to
play New Frontiers with X = 5. Your opponent tries to bluff counter
magic, but he's playing White, so you don't fall for it. When the New
Frontiers resolves, you put five lands in play. The Hierophant's untap
ability will trigger five times. Let the first trigger resolve. Untap
your Hierophant. Use it to untap another land. Let the next trigger
resolve. Lather, rinse, repeat. At the end of this sequence, you should
have five lands and a Stone-Seeder Hierophant untapped. You've
essentially played New Frontiers for free!"
Add cards like Overgrowth for more mana and more fun! |

webmaster with any combos you'd like
to submit. Try to make sure
your combo works and that there isn't already that combo on any other MDV
combo page. You can always
Search Magic Deck Vortex with the new search tool to make sure before
submitting it. I greatly appreciate your
efforts to make these combo pages better. Every once in a while I
