Avatar Week! (2006) Featured Combos.
Last updated 9/9/06 (20/20 Combos, 1 Infinite Combo, 8 Deck Links)

Saproling Cluster + Ashnod's Altar + Fecundity + Serra Avatar
Here's an infinite mana combo for your review and use, using one of our favorite Avatars: Serra Avatar!  This combo will not only provide infinite mana, but you will be able to draw your entire deck in one turn.

How it works: With Saproling Cluster, Ashnod's Altar and Fecundity in play and Serra Avatar in your library, pay 1 mana to discard a card to Saproling Cluster.  Put a 1/1 green Saproling creature token into play.  Sacrifice it to the Altar and add 2 to your mana pool.  Thanks to Fecundity, draw a card.  Discard a card (it doesn't have to be the one you just drew) again to the Cluster and repeat this process.  Serra Avatar, since it shuffles into your library upon hitting the graveyard, wil ensure you have infinite cards to draw.  Now use that mana for something exciting.

Stalking Vengeance - Hell's Caretaker
I was going to do a Delusions article on Stalking Vengeance, but I decided against it.  Instead, I'll just feature it here on the combo page for Avatar Week!  Stalking Vengeance, while tough to cast with a seven converted manacost, is a doozy.  Coupled with cards that can fling, sacrifice, or recur make him a dangerous creature for your opponent.  With Hell's Caretaker, you can sacrifice the same big creature every other turn to recur something else and deal its damage in power to target player (i.e. your opponent). Note: Sanguine Predator also works wonders with Stalking Vengeance.
Serra Avatar - Angelic Chorus or Noble Purpose or Spirit Link
This isn't anything new.  Serra Avatar's power and toughness are each equal to your life total.  Throw a cheap Spirit Link on it and every time it deals damage, you gain your total in life (doubling it).  Angelic Chorus will double it when the Avatar comes into play, which will also double your Avatar.  Noble Purpose is the global version of Spirit Link, affecting all of your creatures (although it's restricted to combat damage).  Flinging your Serra Avatar is also fun.
Scion of the Ur-Dragon - Conspiracy and/or Reito Lantern
Oooh... a new Avatar from Time Spiral.  And it's a Dragon Avatar to boot!  YWN suggests that you use Conspiracy with this Scion so that you aren't restricted to just Dragons.  Imagine changing the shape of Scion to Phage the Untouchable right before it deals it's damage.  That's just one thing you can do with Conspiracy.  However, whether or not you use Conspiracy with it, I suggest using Reito Lantern.  That way, you can keep changing the form of the Scion to the same Dragon every turn.  It can be costly, but if you don't want to include 4 of every cool card(Dragon) in your deck, Reito Lantern is en excellent substitution.
Sanguine Praetor - Gleancrawler
In my opinion, the artwork for Sanguine Praetor was made for the Kamigawa block. The art team for WotC most likely just added in 'posts' below each flaming skull so they didn't look like the usualy floating images around the Spirits to fit it into Dissension.  Anyway, with that aside, Sanguine Praetor is a more controllable Necroplasm.  Combined with Gleancrawler, when you sacrifice a creature to destroy other creatures, all the creatures that went to your graveyard that turn will return to your hand.  This will make it extremely difficult for your opponent to keep creatures on the board.  Just make sure to build your deck to have an assortment of creatures with different casting costs.
Ebon Praetor - Power Conduit
Who needs Breeding Pit? I was trying to find a card that combo'd with Ebon Praetor that wasn't Breeding Pit and then it came to me: Power Conduit.  Instead of sacrificing a creature every turn, just let the -2/-2 counter fall upon the Praetor.  Then use Power Conduit to turn that -2/-2 counter into a +1/+1 counter.  Don't forget that this Avatar has trample AND first strike.
Adarkar Valkyrie - Avatar of Woe
Let's pretend you didn't just see this combo on the Coldsnap combo page.  Cool?  Cool.  OK.  Avatar of Woe is a dangerous Avatar, sharing the Woe all over.  One little tap will send any creature to the graveyard.  If you want to go creature killing crazy, just add Pemmin's Aura.  If you want to gain control of the creatures you kill and put them into play on your side of the board, tap Adarkar Valkyrie.  The Woe Dealer and the Valkyrie make a fine team.  Why not Pemmin's Aura both of them???!
Avatar of Hope - Venom
Initially, I never really liked Avatar of Hope.  However, I then realized again that it can block any number of creatures.  Knowing that it also has flying, it can block almost anything.  Why not use that to your advantage?  Enchant her with Venom and watch your opponent stop attacking you. Anything she blocks now will be destroyed.  She'll stay alive as long as the creature(s) total power doesn't exceed 9 (or have a venom effect).  Now the question is:  Do you prefer the 8th edition artwork over the original art from Masques?
Avatar of Will - Suppress
Brink of Madness used to be considered combo material for Avatar of Will.. and then we got cards like Suppress.  The trick her is to cast Supress on your opponent and then cast Avatar of Woe.  You could always used lots of discard instead of Suppress, but while your opponent has no cards, Avatar of Will only costs UU.  You are saving three mana for this deal.
Scion of Darkness - Fireshrieker
Yeah, I know... this is lame.  However, IT'S STILL A COMBO!!! Equip this Scion with Fireshrieker.  Whenever damage goes through to your opponent, you'll be able to pull two creatures out of your opponent's graveyard and put them into play on your side of the board.  Lets hope they have some good creatures to grab.
Herald of Leshrac - New Frontiers
Herald of Leshrac wins my 'most unique new ability' award.  Who would ever think to make a cumulative upkeep cost controlling other people's lands?!  Anyway, you will eventually run out of lands to control.  Why not cast New Frontiers to make sure your opponent has lands to grab still?  Mind you, the card effect is optional for an opponent, but I think they'll want some lands to cast some spells with... you just have to be careful how and when you cast it.  I would also add Zuran Orb's to your deck using this combo to be sure your opponent doesn't get those lands back when the Herald leaves play.
Hand of Justice - Caribou Range or Mobilization or...
For the record, I'm only mentioning Hand of Justice and Caribour Range because I have a deck using the two cards.  And, this is more synergy than combo.  But, the more creatures you have, the less impact it will be to tap down three creatures and Hand of Justice to kill a creature.  You could always replace Caribou Range with token generating cards like Mobilization, Kjeldoran Outpost and Vhitu-Ghazi, City Tree.
Excruciator - Quicksilver Dagger and/or Cloak of Mists
I don't know whether to call this Avatar an elegant card or a plain card... as there isn't too much to it.  Sure, damage that can't be prevented from it is cool, but its awful plain.  If you want to maximize on this ability, use a pinging aura like Quicksilver Dagger to deal damage that can't be prevented.  Or, try Cloak of Mists to make an unblockable 7/7 creature whose damage can't be prevented.
Dark Depths - Yet Another Ęther Vortex .. (Marit Lage)

I mentioned this combo on the Coldsnap combo page, but I didn't really go into detail about it.  While I'm not a big fan of [UN] cards, this combo is quite ingenius (suggested by YWN).  Yet Another Ęther Vortex created a unique situation for cards on the top of your library: they are in play under your control but still on top of your library.  With Dark Depths on top of your library, it hasn't come into play with any counters and thus, you it will immediately trigger and put the 20/20 flying indestructible legend ary avatar in play.  This ability is a state trigger and thus the previous statement.  Oh... and your new Avatar token with have haste too!  There are many other ways to combo Marit Lage into play, but this is by far the coolest.

Note: The deck link to the left actually uses Ęther Snap... but its still a combo using the land that makes Marit Lage.

Steelshaper's Gift - Helm, Sword & Shield of Kaldra
Assembling all of the pieces to make the Kaldra Avatar creature token can be difficult.  However, if you can use some Equipment search, like Steelshaper's Gift, you can get the pieces in place rather quickly.   Once all three legendary artifact equipments are in play, all it costs is one mana to put your 4/4 Kaldra token in play.  All three equipments automatically attach to it.  So basically, in total, your Kaldra avatar token with be 9/9 with first strike, trample, haste and it will also be indestructible! steelshapers_gift.jpg (38853 bytes) helm_of_kaldra.jpg (44362 bytes) Sword_of_Kaldra.jpg (29710 bytes) shield_of_kaldra.jpg (42487 bytes)
Scion of the Wild - Beacon of Creation
Synergy alert!  Synergy alert!  Finding a card to actually 'combo' with Scion is tough.  This is the best I could do.  Make lots of tokens using Beacon of Creation and watch your Scion of the Wild become HUGE.  To make your HUGE creature actually make a difference, give him trample.  Primal Rage is one of the easiest ways to trample-ify your green Avatar also known as Maro version 2.   Note: You could always use Scion with an infinite creature combo to make this more fun.
Ethereal Champion - Pariah (and maybe Regeneration)
While Pariah and Regeneration are a combo all by themselves on any creature, I was determined to find a combo for Ethereal Champion.  Michael_Zeora suggests using Pariah with Ethereal Champion to generate a damage buffer.  It won't always prevent all of the damage, but you'll be able to keep your life total in the green zone while the Champion soaks up most of the damage.  Add Regeneration to seal the deal.
Avatar of Might -  Forbidden Orchard
Getting an 8/8 Trampling creature in play for two mana is a bargain, but in Avatar of Might's case, your opponent has to have at least four creatures more than you.  Forbidden Orchard is an excellent solution to this problem, as being a green deck, you will most likely have LOTS of creatures in play.  Forbidden Orchard will give your opponent 1/1 Spirit token every time you tap it and thus giving them more creatures to set up for your 8/8 trampling avatar for two green mana.
Personal Incarnation and a bunch of other cards...
Here's a stretch! However, I found this on some Angelfire site that hadn't been updated in like four years.  Anyway, I was amused and thus I am posting it here.  Enchant your Incarnation with Mystic Veil and have No Mercy and Worship in play.  With all of these cards, your Personal Incarnation can't be the target of spells or abilities, you can't die, and anytime an opponent deals damage to you, they die.  Go, go Personal Incarnation.  You could always just use the No Mercy - Worship combo by itself, but this is an Avatar combo page.
Mistform Ultimus - Alpha Status
Can you tell finding 20 combos was difficult for Avatar week!?  Hey, Mistform Ultimus is still an Avatar

Enchant the Ultimus with Alpha Status and watch it get +2/+2 for each other creature in play (including your opponents' creatures).  Seems fun.  Where's my Primal Rage when I need it?  Pemmin's Aura?  Oh well...  At least I have a deck for the combo.

Did you know...?

To the right and left of this text is something called the MDV Deck Link.  You will only find these link buttons on the combo pages.  When you click on a MDV Deck Link it will take you to a deck related to the combo where you found it.

If the button is to the left of the combo text, this means there is a deck already linked.  If the link is to the right, there is a deck found or that is going to be posted.  Or it's a combo that needs a deck. Mind you, not all decks links are going to center around that particular combo, although most do.

Remember, I strongly encourage you to not copy any deck on MDV, but to use it as a reference or inspiration for your own.  Enjoy the combo pages! ~John Streetz~

Your Combo Here!
You could have your combo featured in this spot right here (not literally, but on a future combo page).  Email the webmaster with any combos you'd like to submit.  Try to make sure your combo works and that there isn't already that combo on any other MDV combo page.  You can always Search Magic Deck Vortex with the new search tool to make sure before submitting it.

I greatly appreciate your efforts to make these combo pages better.  Every once in a while I have a page chock-full of your submitted combos... although I will admit about 75% of all submitted combos are duplicates.
